Chapter 142: Chapter 142: He Bore All the Pain for You
Serena Summers gripped the syringe tightly as her vision began to blur.
She was almost at the end of her tether.
If it had been before, even a little bit of pain would make her cry out.
But now, she could only endure it.
Because she knew, someone needed this medicine more than her.
Serena Summers was never really a kind and generous person.
If it were not Lucas Shaw lying here today, Serena would refuse to treat without hesitation.
What did the life and death of others have to do with her?
She could help countless people, but only on the condition that her own safety and life were ensured.
But Lucas Shaw was different.
He was the only person in this world who haunted her dreams.
He was the only one whom Serena wanted to live a safe and disease-free life forever.
An hour quickly passed, and Brandon Reese brought over the medicine that had been decocted.
"Madame, the medicine has arrived."
Brandon Reese walked over carefully, fearing that he might accidentally spill the medicine from the bowl.
God knows how hard it was to get this medicine; even a single drop spilled would be a waste.
This was Lucas Shaw’s life-saving medicine after all!
He didn’t dare to be careless.
"Why has Lucas been unconscious for so long? Is there something wrong with his body?" Liam Shaw asked worriedly.
Serena sat by the bed and pressed her fingertips heavily onto several acupuncture points.
The next second, the person who had been unconscious in bed let out a muffled groan and slowly opened his eyes.
His normally dark eyes were now blood-red, filled with bloodshot vines.
A mix of unbearable pain and restraint lurked deep in his eyes.
"Lucas, are you alright?" Liam Shaw hurriedly approached and asked anxiously.
"No, I’m fine." Lucas Shaw furrowed his brow, rubbing his chest which felt stuffy and painful.
"Husband, please drink the medicine."
Serena scooped up a spoonful of the medicine, blew on it gently, and then brought it to Lucas Shaw’s lips.
Lucas Shaw did not ask what it was and opened his mouth to drink it.
A bowl of Chinese medicine went down, and all that was left in his mouth was the bitter taste of the medicine; Lucas Shaw frowned in disdain.
After finishing the medicine, Serena pulled out a tissue to wipe the water stains from Lucas Shaw’s lips.
Then, she picked up the syringe and whispered, "Husband, bear with it. It might hurt a bit."
Lucas Shaw’s pale lips slowly curved, "What’s this pain? Just do it."
The corner of Serena’s mouth slightly lifted, she aimed at Lucas Shaw’s arm and pushed the needle in.
A sudden sharp pain spread through his arm, Lucas Shaw’s brow twitched slightly, but his expression did not change.
This pain was nothing compared to the pain during poison outbreaks.
After pulling out the needle, Serena asked worriedly, "Have you noticed any changes inside your body?"
Lucas Shaw lowered his gaze, pondering seriously for a moment and then said, "It seems like there’s a heat source inside, moving towards here."
Serena followed the direction Lucas Shaw was pointing at and slowly nodded her head, "All these are normal reactions, but we should still observe more. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, you must tell me immediately."
"Okay." Lucas Shaw lay back down on the bed with Serena’s assistance.
His gaze fixed unwaveringly on Serena Summers, he asked anxiously, "Serena, why are you wet?"
Serena averted her gaze, vaguely replying, "It’s nothing, just accidentally fell into the water. Stop talking now and rest well."
She tucked in the blanket for Lucas Shaw and then left the bedroom.
Lucas Shaw endured immense pain and torment, feeling dizzy and utterly weak.
Soon, he fell back into deep sleep.
Before leaving, Serena checked his pulse and finally breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that there was nothing seriously wrong with him.
The two medications did not cause any adverse reactions in Lucas Shaw’s body, indicating that the poison in his system would soon be completely eliminated.
Serena left the bedroom with difficulty.
She needed rest now.
A quiet place with no one around where she could rest.
So tired...
Fatigue and pain intertwined, nearly tearing Serena’s chest apart.
Liam Shaw and Brandon Reese were immersed in joy, completely oblivious to Serena’s condition.
Upon hearing that the poison in Lucas Shaw’s body would be eliminated soon, Elena Ryan’s face changed dramatically.
She hurried upstairs with her high heels clicking rapidly.
But before she could enter Lucas Shaw’s bedroom, Serena came out.
"Serena, has the poison in Lucas been neutralized?" Elena Ryan asked anxiously.
"Yes." Serena glanced at her lazily and started walking downstairs.
Facing Serena’s cold gaze, a huge panic surged in Elena Ryan’s heart.
She quickly stepped forward, grabbed Serena’s arm, and demanded coldly, "You, clarify yourself! Wasn’t his poisoning severe? How could it be neutralized so easily?"
Serena paused, her brows slightly furrowing, a hint of disgust and mockery flashing in her eyes.
"Mrs. Shaw, your own son will live a long life. Aren’t you happy?"
Elena Ryan was stunned, her expression freezing, "I, of course, am happy, but..."
"Are you happy? I can’t see it!" Serena scoffed, leaning in closer to Elena Ryan and said coldly, "I’ve been wondering, as a mother, why you would hate your own son so much. Now I finally understand."
Elena Ryan’s eyes flickered, her heart skipped a beat, and she held her breath nervously, "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
She lowered her eyes, not daring to meet Serena’s icy stare.
Serena snorted lightly and revealed sternly, "Because... you have always been a coward and a selfish person."
Elena Ryan was furious, yelling coldly, "Serena, I am your mother-in-law! Is this how you speak to your elders?"
"Elders? Do you deserve it?" Serena found it utterly laughable, "You resent Lucas Shaw, thinking that Vincent Shaw’s ambiguity with another woman back then was because you were pregnant and couldn’t satisfy him. But is that really the case?"
It had been a long time since Elena Ryan had heard the name "Vincent Shaw" from someone else.
That name was once her one true love, her everything.
But then, she didn’t know when, everything changed.
Their love was once envied by all, but later... they became a couple bound by resentment.
Elena Ryan opened her mouth, her mind suddenly going blank.
Serena continued, "Elena Ryan, you wished Lucas Shaw were dead, but do you know, if it hadn’t been for having him back then, the one who would have died would be you! You wished him dead, yet he bore all the pain for you!"
Serena’s words struck like thunder, exploding in Elena Ryan’s mind.
She stared incredulously, grabbing Serena’s shoulders, her eyes red, "What are you saying? Say it again? I don’t believe it!"
Serena’s body was violently shaken by her, nearly falling to the ground.
Fortunately, Liam Shaw rushed over just in time to pull Elena Ryan away from Serena.
