Chapter 34: The Contract Countdown
Chapter 34: The Contract Countdown
Zamian walked through the hallway with his usual calm demeanor and intimidating aura. Nurses, caught off guard, exchanged whispers, "Gosh, he’s so fine." Their voices trailed off as they looked at him, unable to speak their thoughts aloud.
He carried a bag in one hand, containing a plate of food and a bottle of grape juice. As he walked, he slightly opened the door and paused, his attention caught by Mira’s words: "If you don’t mind, could you please tell me what you told my husband?"
Zamian then spoke, "No need for that. I’ll tell you myself." He noticed Mira’s shocked expression at seeing him there, recalling that he had previously mentioned he was leaving for work. However, he decided to return when he remembered her fondness for fried rice.
His lips curled into a slight smirk, a subtle gesture that lingered as he observed her. Although her referring to him as her husband surprised him, his expression remained inscrutable. The doctor, observing the interaction, gave a respectful nod before leaving.
---
Immediately after the doctor left, Zamian walked towards the bed and sat down. He pressed a button on the side, and a table smoothly extended from the bed. As he placed the food on the table and began to remove the coverings in silence, Mira’s gaze fell on the ring on his finger. A wave of realization washed over her—how could she have forgotten? The contract. Her eyes widened in shock.
In her panic, she noticed she didn’t have her phone with her. She turned to Zamian and said, "May I borrow your phone, please?"
Zemian immediately pulled out his phone and handed it to Mira. Her surprise was evident; she hadn’t expected him to comply so readily. She quickly turned on the phone and noticed she had only two days left until the end of the month. Her eyes widened as she realized that she had just three months remaining in the contract. The realization hit her hard—she had made little progress in this time.
Trying to mask her anxiety, she resolved to address the situation later, even if it meant seeking help from a friend. She handed the phone back to Zamian , who accepted it without a word.
---
Mira ate the fried rice quickly, losing herself in the moment. The comforting taste of one of her favorite foods made her feel at ease. She loved it not only for its flavor but also because it reminded her of the meals her father used to prepare for her back in high school. With a smile, she said, "Thank you for the meal."
Zamian nodded, observing her closely. Mira struggled to adjust to his intense gaze, feeling awkward about being watched while eating. Her discomfort grew when Zamian reached out and gently wiped a bit of sauce from near her lips. Her cheeks flushed with surprise, and she felt self-conscious as she watched him stare at the sauce for a moment before using a napkin to clean his hands.
Trying to ease the awkwardness, Mira searched for something to say. Zamian broke the silence, "James will be arriving in five minutes to take you back to the mansion. You’ll stay there for a week before returning to work."
Mira’s anxiety spiked. "No, I...I actually can’t. I’m fine. Really, I’m fine. I want to go back to work."
Zamian interrupted gently, "Shh, it’s okay. I’ve already informed the company about it."
Mira nodded, unaware that by "inform," he actually meant shutting down the company.
Mira’s eyes widened as she realized Zamian was also the owner of the company. She had completely forgotten. The recent events had overwhelmed her, and she thought she might need a journal to keep track of everything.
Quietly, she looked up at him, unable to find words. She simply nodded as he stood to leave. "I’ll be going now. James will arrive shortly."
---
As Zamian left, Mira felt a vibration on the table. She opened the drawer and found her phone, which she hadn’t realized was there. She wondered if Zamian had placed it there for her. Picking up her phone, she saw that Lily was calling. A smile appeared on her lips as she answered.
"Hello."
"Oh my god, Mira! I hope you’re okay. Where are you right now? I need to see you," Lily’s voice was filled with concern.
Mira replied calmly, "I’m at the hospital. I’ll send you the address. Thank you so much for calling."
Lily’s voice was anxious. "Gosh, I’m such a bad friend. I didn’t even call you earlier. I hope you’re really okay."
"It’s alright, Lily. I’m fine, really," Mira reassured her. "You don’t need to worry so much."
Lily insisted, "I need the address. I’ll be there soon."
Mira nodded and said, "Okay. Bye." She smiled, feeling grateful for Lily’s concern and support. She immediately sent the address to Lily.
Not long after, she heard a knock on the door. Opening it, she saw James standing there.
"It’s really nice to see you again, Ms. Mira," James said with a smile. "Are you ready to go now?"
Mira replied, "I’d like to stay for a while. Someone will be visiting soon."
James nodded as Mira spoke. "You can sit over there on the sofa while we wait."
He took a seat on the sofa, following Zamian’s instructions to not let anyone in. Quietly, he asked, "Ms. Mira, do you really know the person who’s coming?"
Mira answered, "Of course. She’s one of my close friends."
James nodded, accepting her assurance. As long as Mira was comfortable, he would stay to keep watch. He settled on the sofa and began reading a magazine. Mira, meanwhile, scrolled through her phone. She felt uneasy when she saw Zack’s number and immediately blocked it, deleting all related contacts to avoid any discomfort.
Soon, there was another knock on the door. Mira opened it to find Lily.
"Oh my God, Mira, you won’t believe what happened! I almost had a fight with the nurse. Please, I can’t believe this. I was so embarrassed just to get here," Lily said, visibly flustered.
Mira stared at Lily.
The nurse, who had been standing behind Lily, bowed apologetically. "I’m so sorry, ma’am. I had no idea you knew Ms. Mira."
Lily added, "Yeah, I knew you didn’t, but at least you should have shown some respect. I was embarrassed downstairs."
"It’s fine," Mira said. "Don’t worry about it."
The nurse gave a respectful bow before leaving. Lily turned to Mira, saying, "Gosh, that was so embarrassing. She inhaled and and exhaled loudly Anyway, I hope you’re okay." She then took Mira’s hand in hers.
Mira smiled. "Yes, I’m fine. And I can’t believe I didn’t call you earlier. By the way, I brought you something."
Lily pulled out a small white bag. As Mira opened it, she found a beautifully shaped bunny cookie. The sweet aroma filled the room.
"I’ll find somewhere to sit while you enjoy it," Lily said, turning to find a seat.
Mira had forgotten to mention that James was there. As Lily turned towards the sofa, her eyes widened in surprise when she noticed James already seated there, his gaze showing a mix of surprise and shock.
