Chapter 58: Organizing Evidence
"Are you hungry? Want to grab something to eat?"
Faced with Kevin’s considerate question, Jessie nodded. After spending time together, she had a much better impression of him. Even though they were only married by name, he was someone very reliable for her. Unknowingly, their relationship seemed to have become a bit closer.
He was just about to find a restaurant when her phone rang. She hung up in annoyance, even blocking the number. Ever since her relatives had leaked her phone number, she had been receiving countless calls from strangers.
Just seconds after hanging up, Kevin’s phone rang.
"Kevin, is Jessie in a bad mood? Why did she hang up on me, too?"
Jessie was taken aback. Did she just hang up on Grandpa Harper?
She quickly took his phone. "Grandpa, I’m so sorry. I thought it was a spam call earlier."
Grandpa Harper didn’t take it to heart, his voice gentle. "Jessie, I saw the news online. Don’t let them affect you. Kevin knows a lot of people, so he can help you resolve this, okay?"
"If this brat doesn’t help you, just tell me; I’ll give him a good lesson! You are husband and wife, so you should help each other more."
He didn’t usually go online, mostly spending time playing chess and growing flowers. The online news was something he heard from one of his grandsons, prompting him to check his phone.
The headline was about Kevin and Julia Rossi’s rumored affair, while Jessie’s story had died down. Yet, he was still worried it would affect Jessie.
Hearing Grandpa Harper’s words, Jessie quickly explained, "Grandpa, Kevin has been with me all day and trying to help me in every way."
Upon hearing that, his tone softened as he nodded. "Good, that’s how it should be."
They used to say that the best way to strengthen a relationship was to endure hardships together. This must be the best way for these two to grow closer.
The longer they spend time together, the more they will discover each other’s good qualities. Having a grandchild was just around the corner.
He comforted Jessie for a while.
On the other hand, Jessie thought Grandpa Harper would talk with Kevin, but as soon as she handed the phone over, he had already hung up.
Kevin was used to his grandfather’s attitude. Ever since he married Jessie, Grandpa Harper’s heart was pretty much all dedicated to her, as he constantly checked if he was treating her well.
He didn’t know where Grandpa Harper’s partiality toward Jessie came from. Perhaps he just really wanted a great-grandchild, as Kevin was the only one who got married in this generation.
Once the other grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, he wouldn’t be so partial anymore.
He suggested, "Shall we go get the contract from Mom now? We can then consolidate the evidence and post it online."
Jessie thought his words made sense. After all, dragging things out wouldn’t be good.
After that, they went to Laura’s place, where she was at home alone with Luke.
"Mom, where’s Uncle William?" Jessie asked, not seeing William around and feeling a bit angry.
Laura needed comfort the most now, yet her stepfather wasn’t even home. How come he was never this busy before?
"He said he had to work late and won’t be back tonight," Laura waved her hand dismissively.
"It’s fine; we can’t count on him anyway. Where did you two go?"
"Kevin and I went back to our old hometown for a bit and recorded some evidence. Mom, can you bring out the contract they signed back then for me?" Jessie asked as she sat down with Kevin, helping Laura hold Luke.
"Mom, you should stay home for the next few days and try not to go out. The matter isn’t resolved yet, and it wouldn’t be good if those people come looking for you."
She wasn’t too worried about herself, but Laura still had to look after Luke.
Laura stood up to find the documents. "Don’t worry, I haven’t been out working in a while. Not many people know me, but the comments online are truly harsh.
"Remember when I used to run my shop? A few old customers messaged me asking if that person was me."
Jessie nodded. "It’s fine—being scolded a bit won’t cause us any damage. They can say what they want."
Laura replied, "I have the same thoughts, but your grandparents won’t let this matter slide so easily."
Those greedy people wouldn’t stop until they reached their goal.
"People online are saying your grandparents are pitiful and calling you unfilial; they have even begun making donations to let them live in the city."
Jessie saw those comments, as well. Some sensible netizens argued that housing prices in the city were high, and that her grandparents should have remained in their countryside home.
However, those comments were soon overwhelmed by the trolls.
She didn’t mind and comforted Laura, "Mom, we can’t control what others say. These netizens think they’re upholding justice based on a few words, but they are not aware that their words can hurt others."
"Also, they’re donating money?"
Kevin explained, "They’re not; it’s all fabricated. Your grandparents and cousins are staying in a hotel, hoping to force you to give money."
She couldn’t help but sigh at the unfairness of life, where misfortune always seemed to land on the unlucky people. Even after bullying her and Laura years ago, they still wouldn’t leave them alone. Despite already having everything, it still wasn’t enough.
Laura was infuriated, placing the documents she had found on the table. "This is the evidence from back then!"
Jessie took a quick glance and bundled them all together. "Mom, you don’t have to worry. I’ll combine these and expose everything altogether so we can slap them hard in the face!"
Kevin chimed in, "Exactly, I know many friends in the media. We will ask them to help and increase the exposure."
Just retaliating wasn’t enough. Jessie’s cousins had been living well, so once the impact was amplified, they would have to face the consequences of everything.
If they didn’t have to reap what they sowed, they would think Kevin’s wife was easy to bully.
Before she could start organizing the material, her phone buzzed. Jessie, following Kevin’s advice, had already unblocked Frankie Moore.
He had told her that her relatives would definitely come back asking Jessie for money.
Sure enough, Frankie’s first message was just as they expected.
[Jessie, what you gave us wasn’t enough. Send another 100,000, and I’ll delete the online stuff.]
She ignored his text and took a screenshot. Then, she organized the disownment documents, the contracts from back then, and their experiences over the years. After everything had been put together, she posted the evidence online. With Kevin working behind the scenes, her response quickly became a hot search topic as it took over the top spot.
