Chapter 14: Bargain
Chapter 14: Bargain
The next morning, Kevin’s alarm rang. He frowned, turning it off directly before preparing to sleep a little longer.
Before he could lie down for another two minutes, Jessie knocked on his door as her voice came through.
"Mr. Harper, are you up? It’s almost eight o’clock, and we agreed to go to the mall together at half past seven."
Hearing her voice, Kevin responded somewhat irritably.
"Coming."
He had completely forgotten about this. Although he didn’t want to, he had to get up no matter what as he thought about his promise yesterday.
He quickly got up and changed his clothes. When he opened the door, he saw Jessie had prepared breakfast and was sitting at the table waiting for him.
As soon as she saw him, she brought a fried egg toast in front of him.
"You went to a party with your boss yesterday, so you probably drank a bit of alcohol. A lighter breakfast in the morning would be better for your stomach."
Jessie’s thoughtfulness made Kevin feel a hint of complicated emotions, but he still nodded and sat down.
The toast was grilled just right, while the fried egg was runny. Kevin had to admit that Jessie really had good cooking skills.
"Oh, you said you want to bring your grandpa and the others over for dinner this weekend, right? Does your family have any taboos? Or is there anything they like to eat? We can buy the ingredients today."
Her attentiveness made Kevin look at her in a slightly different view. He drank the glass of milk on the table and replied in a deep voice, “Don’t worry about all this. Just make whatever—you don’t need to be particular.”
“Okay.” Jessie nodded. But as she looked at Kevin’s stern expression, she couldn’t help but purse her lips.
She seriously suspected he had a bad morning temper. Who would have such a serious expression early in the morning?
"Mr. Harper, can I ask you a question?"
"Go ahead."
"Do you normally wake up cranky in the morning?" She was purely curious, blinking her clear eyes and eyeing him up and down.
Kevin’s hand on the cup froze, but he stubbornly insisted, "No."
He was Grace City’s richest man and the head of the Harper family; he had been taught to remain calm and restrained since he was a child, so how could he be grumpy in the morning?
Jessie nodded thoughtfully, and the two of them quickly tidied up and left.
The bodyguards were waiting downstairs, ready to show Kevin the new microwave they had bought, until they saw Kevin and Jessie leaving the building together.
Everyone quickly turned away. Some of them pretended to look at their phones, while some pretended to pass by, making themselves look as busy as possible.
Kevin watched their poor disguise, a flash of coldness passing through his eyes. However, he recalled how he forgot to remind them of this yesterday, so he couldn’t blame them.
Fortunately, Jessie didn’t notice anything and whispered next to him, "Mr. Harper, those people are acting so strange. Could they be from the mafia?"
He shook his head and told her to follow him with no worries. It wasn’t until they saw Kevin and Jessie leave in the car that the bodyguards sighed in relief.
Wait, the young madam saw them as mafia gangsters in her eyes?
As soon as Jessie settled into the passenger seat, she pulled out the shopping list and calculated the supplies they needed to buy today. She wanted to avoid doing things last-minute, especially since she had a tendency to forget important things if she didn’t prepare in advance.
After confirming the list, she glanced at Kevin, who had been silent all this time. His face was still stern, but his driving style was very smooth and elegant, making her involuntarily look at him a few more times.
Kevin noticed her gaze and asked softly, "What are you looking at?"
She chuckled and explained, "Does it make you uncomfortable? Sorry, I’ve never seen someone drive so gracefully. Your demeanor is like a work of art, and here I thought all repairmen were tough and reckless. With you being so elegant, sometimes I wonder if you’re actually tricking me."
As she said that, Kevin’s face changed slightly as he slowly explained, "Whenever my boss’s driver is on leave, I have to drive in his stead. Since it’s a luxury car, I need to drive carefully. I don’t want to make my boss look bad."
Hearing this, Jessie found his words reasonable.
When they arrived at the mall, Kevin looked at the long list in Jessie’s hand and said, "You’re buying so much? Do you have enough money?"
She blinked at him with a reassuring look, then pulled his sleeve and walked into the mall.
She bought some daily necessities from the supermarket and then some small items and trinkets she wanted to buy as decorative pieces for the house.
"Help me put these in the car, and then we’ll go to the next place," Jessie said before lowering her head to check her list and see what other items she needed to buy.
Kevin didn’t say a word—he just stared at her in silence, gritting his teeth as he loaded everything into the car.
The bodyguards who were secretly following and protecting Kevin were stunned when they saw this scene.
Their president was doing manual labor, helping the young madam move things?
More importantly, he was listening to her requests.
For a moment, they exchanged glances with each other.
After putting the stuff into the car, Kevin followed Jessie to a small shop near the mall. She had her eyes on a set of cups with beautiful patterns on them. Thinking of it, they wouldn’t have enough tableware now if Grandpa Harper and the others came over for a meal together.
After some contemplation, Jessie decided to buy them directly.
"Sir, how much is this set?"
The shopkeeper did not speak but directly held out five fingers, indicating it was fifty dollars.
She exclaimed, "So expensive?"
Kevin raised an eyebrow; this amount was nothing to him. Seeing her still hesitating, he was about to take out his wallet to pay, but she quickly grabbed his wrist.
As he glanced at the slender hand holding his wrist, Kevin couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast between their skin tones and the size of their arms. His thoughts drifted back to the night Jessie was drunk—she was undeniably thin, but she still had curves in all the right places.
Not knowing what he was thinking, Jessie whispered, "Don’t be insane; that’s fifty dollars! Stay still and follow my words later."
Kevin found it strange but didn’t say anything.
She made a disgusted face and waved her hand. "Fifty dollars is too expensive! The pattern here is not even that nice, and look here, there are some cracks on it."
He found her behavior a little strange yet funny. She clearly liked the set just moments ago, but now, she was acting like it was full of flaws.
Kevin, who had never bargained over prices before, didn’t understand why she was making such a face.
"Sir, five dollars, will you sell it or not? If you don’t sell, then just forget it."
When Jessie directly cut the price from fifty dollars to five dollars, Kevin’s expression immediately changed to one of shock.
Could anyone actually bargain like this? He began to wonder whether the shopkeeper would kick them out or not.
