Chapter 12: His Love Rival?
Chapter 12: His Love Rival?
Before he could even suggest having a meal together, Jessie was interrupted by Lilian who had arrived in a hurry.
"What are you two talking about?"
Steve gave Lilian an exasperated glance, making a mental note to deduct her salary next time!
Jessie didn’t hear what he was going to say and simply said, "He mentioned it’s getting late and offered to drive us back."
Upon hearing this, Lilian patted his shoulder and exclaimed, "Boss, I never expected you to have a moral sense for once and suggest driving us back. It’s truly touching."
In his mind, Steve thought to himself that this indeed was a rare display of his moral sense, but he didn’t mean to drive Lilian.
"But don’t you have important things to attend to? It might be inconvenient for you to drive us home," Jessie hesitated, having overheard Steve mentioning his busy schedule with work earlier.
Lilian also nodded, "Yes, Boss, you should stay here and focus on your work. I’ll drive Jessie back, so you don’t have to worry."
"Yeah. You must be busy here tonight, so Lilian and I can just go back ourselves," Jessie added with a gentle smile.
Seeing both of them insisting, Steve could only reluctantly agree.
Before they left, he took out his phone and handed it to Jessie, "Jessie, we don’t have each other’s contact information yet. Would you like to?"
Without much thought, Jessie agreed with a nod. After all, Steve was just an old university classmate. Exchanging contact information with him seemed harmless.
After bidding farewell to the two, Steve watched their departing figures for a while before preparing to return to the party.
At that moment, Kevin emerged with a group of bodyguards and a crowd of executives trying to impress him.
It was in this moment that Steve realized the stark difference in their status—-he was the one who needed to bow down to many people, while Kevin was a truly higher being; exuding arrogance and an innately noble temperament that made Steve subconsciously lower his head.
Kevin glanced at Steve. He had noticed Jessie was standing with Steve earlier, which led him to begin pondering the relationship between the two.
Did she already find a new target?
This woman was really not simple...
"What’s your name?" a deep voice sounded from above, startling Steve. He initially thought he had misheard it, but when he looked up, Kevin was actually talking to him.
"I’m Steve James."
"What are you doing standing here?"
The usually silent business magnate, President Harper, was actually initiating a conversation with him?
Steve quickly adjusted his attitude and respectfully replied, "Oh, I was just seeing off my subordinates and classmates who are leaving."
Without talking further, Kevin nodded and left with his bodyguards.
Those people following Kevin couldn’t help but look at Steve. What kind of charm did this young man possess? He actually managed to make President Harper talk to him first?
Steve found it strange as well, but before he could figure it out, Kevin had already gotten into his car and disappeared from his sight.
Inside the car, the bodyguard handed Kevin his phone and began reporting the day’s events, "We have avoided Madam Jessie with no issues."
"Good." Kevin nodded and quietly ordered, "Head to Quiet River Community."
As he opened his phone and scrolled through the photos his bodyguards took that day, Kevin was eager to see if Jessie had been flirting with other men at the party behind his back.
Most of the photos showed Jessie and Lilian eating together, the background barely changing except for the changing dishes on their plates.
Kevin noticed their interactions and couldn’t help but smirk, but the next photo made his face turn grim, squinting closer at Steve in the picture. Steve clearly had affectionate eyes in this photo when he was secretly staring at Jessie.
As the heir to Grace City’s biggest business empire, Kevin’s sharp instincts could tell that Steve had different thoughts toward Jessie.
That gaze he had wasn’t one for an old classmate; it was love!
Instinctively tightening his grip on the phone, Kevin never expected that Jessie’s outing would bring him a love rival!
Good—spectacular, even!
When he returned home, Jessie seemed to have just arrived as well. After tidying up his clothes, he opened the door and went in. Jessie, who was taking off her coat, smiled.
She said, "Funny how we both arrived back at the same time. I just got in, and you came home right after. But why didn’t I see you on the road?"
Wasn’t the answer obvious? He had arrived before her, but he was worried she would notice something strange, so he waited in the car until she went upstairs before coming down.
"Maybe you didn’t see me because it’s dark out. I took a different route today," Kevin replied casually.
Jessie nodded without much thought.
"What did you do today? Weren’t you supposed to buy household items?" Kevin sat on the couch, glancing over to Jessie with his sharp eyes as he anticipated her explanation.
He had expected her to begin using all sorts of excuses, but she simply told him everything that happened in the evening.
"I went to a party with my friend today, and guess what? The food there was made by a top chef, and they were absolutely delicious. It’s a shame I couldn’t take them away, otherwise I would’ve brought some back home for you," Jessie reminisced about the flavors.
Kevin did not care about the food. After all, the Harper family manor had their own team of Michelin-star chefs to manage his meals, so those party dishes were nothing special to Kevin.
"Is that all?" he raised an eyebrow, staring intensely at Jessie, a hint of coldness appearing in his eyes.
As expected, this woman was hiding her affair with another man from him—she was clearly looking for a backup plan. She really did have sinister intentions.
Jessie frowned and thought for a moment. Suddenly, realization struck her. She looked up with a start and clapped her hands.
"I just remembered! I ran into an old college classmate today—turns out he’s my best friend’s boss. Isn’t that such a coincidence?"
Hearing this, Kevin was left completely speechless.
Seeing his silence, she found it strange.
’Did I say something wrong just now?’
"Oh, Mr. Harper, are you free tomorrow? If you are, maybe we can go shopping together again?"
"Sure," Kevin nodded in agreement.
Looking at the empty house, Jessie couldn’t help but sigh. Aside from the furniture, there was nothing else to it—it felt eerily hollow.
Just as she was about to take a shower and head to bed, she suddenly recalled something and turned to look at Kevin.
"Mr. Harper, I just remembered something strange."
"What is it?"
"At the party today, I saw that rich man from the Harper family, and he resembles you a lot. Plus, your last name is also Harper. Could it be possible... you’re part of that same Harper family too?"
