Chapter 71: Regrets of Past
Chapter 71: Regrets of Past
Only after seeing the ghastly expression on her face did he realize what he had done. In an attempt to escape her father’s wrath, he had tragically hurt her feelings.
She took it well, or so he thought. She pretended to be feeling not well and asked him to drop her at her home. He thought they were fine. But it was wishful thinking. He knew it.
The distance between them on the ride back was large. It was the same as it was just until a month ago when he asked her to the prom. But he felt the coldness from her.
She was heartbroken. He thought she was staring out of the window but she was crying. He was crippled as he didn’t know what to do. He never cared about anyone enough to console them or apologize to them for what he did. He couldn’t figure out how to stop her.
He let her go pretending he didn’t see how hurt she was.
The biggest mistake of his life!
Whom can he blame but himself? No one stopped him from explaining it to her. If he was mature enough to handle that situation, he would have explained to her why he couldn’t kiss her. He would have begged her to wait for him until he becomes a suitable man for her. He would have told her that he would do anything to get her father’s permission.
She would have appreciated his decision not to overstep the boundaries set by her father. She loved her father and respected him. She would have respected the man who respected her father. That’s the kind of person she is.
Tony held his chest as a pang of pain hit him.
No... that was not the only reason.
Jealousy... that was the reason he couldn’t explain the truth to her. When she talked to him about that senior who made the awesome speeches about equality and justice...
It hurt him.
He thought she can hurt for a night. He thought he could explain it to her the next day.
The next day never came.
Until... the day of the party.
She slapped him with a cold hard fact that night. Something that totally changed his impression of her. He was late to realize that. He regretted ever letting his jealousy stop him.
She told him...
"Hey, stop!"
Tony snapped out from his trip to the memory lane hearing the rowdy voice of someone.
Thinking about their past soothed his anger. It won’t be hard for him to find out who misbehaved with her. He will make sure that guy gets what he deserves. He will have his name blacklisted and dismissed. That guy will not receive a single cent of pension. He will make sure his family disowns him and he ends up on the streets.
When in the streets, no one would care what happens to him and he will have a peek at a life in hell while being alive.
Death would be too easy on him.
Tony looked at the origin of the loud noise. Marcella was being stopped by two drunk men. They were drunk beyond their senses and tried to touch her. He realized that they’d already reached their apartment building.
He saw her reaching for his purse. He didn’t mind it if she killed them. She was smart and she must have a gun with the serial number scratched off. It won’t come back to bite her and it would reduce her anger.
Maybe I should take her to the gun range.
She used to get calm after emptying magazines. She loved the smell of gunpowder in her hands. He didn’t remember her visiting a gun range lately. She must be so wound up.
He rushed to her side as she was still shuffling inside her purse. She must have forgotten to bring her gun. Those guys were trying to offer their help in escorting her to her home.
He stood behind her and wrapped his arm around her neck.
"Back off!" he pushed those two drunkards off her. "Don’t make me kill you!" He put his hand inside his trouser pockets.
Those two weren’t drunk enough to not understand the danger he posed. They appeared to be some regular office workers who had an extra pint. With their hands up, they ran away begging him not to shoot them.
Marcella held his arm that was around her neck. "I would have handled them," she said.
She was a little scared as she was alone but now, she was relieved.
"I know," Tony said. He didn’t let her go. She will not let him hug her tonight and this is the closest he can get to hug her.
Marcella sighed and leaned on his back. She could sense his insistence on hugging her. "You weren’t off to kill that guy?" she asked. She really thought he walked away.
As always, he appears whenever she needs his help. She didn’t even notice him. Maybe it is her fault for not noticing him around her.
"I decided to let him face the law," Tony said taking a whiff of her scent. He wrapped his other hand around her waist as he sensed no objection from her.
She’s quick to anger but it takes time for her to relax. What a woman!
"I’m glad," Marcella said. "That is for the best."
She knew Tony had the power to let that fat whale face the law for what he did. Of how conceited he was, she was not the only woman he tried to act that way. If that guy gets punished, it would help a lot of women and it would instill fear in the hearts of other cops like him who think that they have the power to do anything without anyone asking any questions.
Tony kissed her head.
Marcella cleared her throat. They were standing in the street and this guy was taking advantage of her.
"Do you have the keys?" she asked.
Tony sighed and held her hand. They reached their house and relieved Rosy. The moment Rosy left the door, Tony pinned her to the wall.
"I enjoyed my day with you today," he said.
"Really?" she was not so sure of that. Didn’t they fight just some minutes ago? Has he already forgotten about it? Just because she is not angry anymore, did he think it was nothing?
"Yes. Why not? We had a good time earlier. And we had disagreements. Now I know more of your thoughts which I will.... clear somehow..." he looked into her eyes. "You mean everything to me, Marcella."
"It’s not just disagreements. I cannot..." she looked away.
She can never forgive him for letting her sister suffer in her place.
Tony pressed his forehead on hers. She became stiff as she was not very pleased with that intimate position.
"Marcella... Marcella... Marcella..." he whispered in her ear.
That’s all he said for some time. He just chanted her name as a prayer. Without any protest, her entire body relaxed. She leaned comfortably on the wall.
His voice must hold magic.
As his lips gently traced her cheek, she closed her eyes.
