Chapter 54: The Truth(2)

Gloria leaned forward out of curiosity.

At that time, they heard someone walking in the hallway. Josephine stuck her head in. "Finished yet?" she asked.

"Yep," Marcella quickly chugged the coffee down and both Marcella and Gloria ran to their stations. They’ve been out of there for a long time.

"Cindy is spreading rumors about you, Marcella," Dorothy said as she entered the room.

"What rumors?" Marcella asked. Her heart started to pound.

"It’s something new this time..." Dorothy rolled her eyes.

"What?" Marcella couldn’t bear the suspense and raised her voice.

"What’s the magic word, Marcella?" Dorothy wriggled her brows.

"Oh, f*Ck me dead," Marcella mumbled under her breath which was heard by everyone in the room. They all looked at Marcella as if she was a freak in the freak show.

Gloria bowed her head and giggled. Of course, no one has heard Marcella cussing before.

"Sorry," Marcella smiled awkwardly. Her cover has been blown. These days she’s doing whatever. She didn’t want to think about the troubles it might bring her.

"Please, Dorothy, tell me what the rumor is..." She held her palms together and spoke in a begging tone.

"Shut up!" she hit Gloria who was giggling still.

"Ouch! You’re such a..." Gloria rubbed her arm.

The entire room was filled with laughter. Marcella was surprised to see the joyous atmosphere in the room. Usually, they all will be sitting quietly whispering among themselves.

But this is nice, isn’t it?

"Did you sneak into a bathroom stall with Mr. Fletcher?" Dorothy asked.

"What?" Marcella was stunned. "He... we met Louis Fletcher in the hallway and~"

"Noah Fletcher," Dorothy said covering her face with the file she had. Her shoulders were shaking as she tried to control her laughter.

"What the-!" Gloria shouted. "Mars, why didn’t you tell me? Are you going to marry Mr. Fletcher?"

Marcella blinked her eyes as she lacked words to say.

"Don’t forget us when you become the step-mom of Mr. Louis Fletcher, Marcella. Give us all a raise," Josephine joined in on the teasing.

’Oh, shut up, people," Marcella shushed them. She didn’t know what to do.

Tony said that he broke up with Cindy making her feel scorned. And now she is descending hell on her.

She looked around at the joyful faces. They were all laughing and teasing her. No one was believing the rumor. She could see it clearly.

Marcella joined them and started laughing.

Maybe now would be the perfect time to reveal the secret.

She took the ring from her purse and wore it on her finger.

"I can get you whatever you want, but... do you think my husband would let me marry Noah Fletcher?" she showed them the ring.

"Ahhh!"

The entire room was filled with the happy screeches of the women. They all held her hand to take a good look of her ring.

"When did you get married?"

"Why didn’t you invite us to your wedding?"

"Who is the guy?"

Everyone had a lot of questions.

"This is a beautiful ring," Gloria said. "Looks like an antique Victorian design. It’s a real Emerald and the diamonds are of good quality. It would be worth around 30k," she appraised.

Marcella was shocked. Gloria’s husband owns a pawn shop and she knows some things about gems and jewelry as she often helps her husband. If she valued that ring that much, it should be the case.

But...

"It’s valued even more," Marcella said. "It’s a family heirloom that belonged to my husband’s grandmother..."

Truly, when added emotional value, anything would become priceless.

"Family heirloom? Is your husband a Lord?" Gloria asked.

"His grandfather was... But he came to our country and so they lost the title when they became citizens," Marcella said. She got these details from Cynthia Crawford.

"Goodness gracious," Gloria said in an aristocratic accent. "Why couldn’t I find myself a Baron or a Duke? Look at my ring... The poor lonely diamond..." she pouted.

"That’s a five-carat diamond ring, Gloria," Dorothy shook her head. "Look at our lonely fingers..." she pouted as Josephine joined her. "Oh... where is my soulmate... Please, find me soon. Your wife is waiting for you...."

They talked for a while and then they returned to their stations as they got busy. Marcella too got busy with her job.

She looked at her ring.

She said the ring was priceless. It was, there is no denying it.

But why did Tony give her the ring? He could have kept it safe to pass it on to his son. Yet, he gave it to her.

Why? Could he have some feelings for me? Did he really think I am worthy to be wearing his family heirloom?

Maybe he wants everyone to believe that they married for love and that he respects and loves her. Giving her the ring would be the perfect way to show everyone that he loves her. No one would question their marriage too.

He surely is a smart guy.

She needs to keep the ring safe.

And Cindy... What can she do about her?

She might have shut those rumors with her wedding announcements but Cindy won’t keep quiet. She will find other ways to attack her.

Should I use my influence to fire Cindy?

Marcella decided to talk to Louis Fletcher to fire Cindy if she did one more thing to offend her. Gloria was right. She cannot allow others to bully her.

Not standing up for oneself is not ladylike. It’s the opposite of that. A lady is graceful and elegant. She doesn’t raise her voice but commands the respect of others.

People don’t respect those who don’t even respect themselves. She needs to respect herself more. She cannot allow herself to be bullied by the likes of Cindy.

Right at five in the evening, they all finished their jobs and one by one everyone left. Marcella and Gloria were the only ones left.

Marcella tried to sneak out but Gloria had kept her there. Marcella knew she will have to talk about the past that was hard for her to accept.

It was her fault and she couldn’t forgive herself for what she did.

"Cindy was right," Marcella said. "Not right right... But..."

Gloria glared at her as she was confused.

"Well, there was this guy I..." she held her breath remembering that fateful night.

There was a masquerade party in their house almost a week after her prom. Her father had forbidden her from attending the party.

But she sneaked there. She drank an entire glass of wine on the counter, except that was not wine but some cocktail that had a high alcohol level.

There was this guy... wearing a mask, and she...

"I told my dad I slept with this guy..."
