Gu Kai had already buckled his seat belt.

His hands on the steering wheel, he saw her get into the car, then he lowered his head to drive without speaking.

Bai Yiyi fastened her seatbelt, turned her head to glance at him, then turned to look out the window again.

The whole trip passed in silence.

Bai Yiyi, originally looking out the car window, found her thoughts drifting before she knew it. Though her eyes were on the scenery outside, her mind was elsewhere.

“Get out of the car.”

It wasn’t until Gu Kai’s voice next to her broke the silence that she regained her composure, unbuckled the seat belt, opened the car door, and got out, only to realize they weren’t home but at the mall parking lot.

“Are you going to buy something?”

Bai Yiyi blinked in surprise, and Gu Kai just gave a faint ‘mm-hmm’ before striding towards the entrance of the mall.

Feeling that Gu Kai was acting a bit odd today, a flicker of hesitation crossed Bai Yiyi’s mind, and she followed him out of the mall.

Once inside the mall, Bai Yiyi suggested, “I’ll just look around on the first floor, you go and buy whatever you need to. After you’re done, just give me a call.”

No sooner had she spoken than Gu Kai grabbed her hand.

In the crowded public space, Bai Yiyi swallowed back the cry of surprise that had reached her lips.

She glared at Gu Kai, signaling him to let go.

Rolling his eyes, Gu Kai dragged her onto the elevator, only letting go on the second floor to get a shopping cart. It seemed as if he was afraid Bai Yiyi might run off again, he warned her in a low voice, “Stay with me, don’t wander off.”

Bai Yiyi pouted and followed behind him.

Gu Kai’s tall figure moved in and out between the aisles, and Bai Yiyi, one step behind, watched as he threw item after item into the cart.

In half an hour, Gu Kai had the shopping cart filled to the brim, mostly with food.

And most of it was meat.

Bai Yiyi thought to herself, this guy really loves to eat meat.

“Is there anything else you need to buy?”

After Gu Kai had finished picking out his items, he turned to speak to Bai Yiyi.

Bai Yiyi shook her head, “No, if you’ve got everything, let’s go.”

Gu Kai hesitated for a moment, then pushed the cart towards the snack area. It was unclear whether he had observed her preferences closely over time, because the snacks he picked out were the ones Bai Yiyi liked.

Or whether Bai Yuqin had told him before, what Bai Yiyi liked and didn’t like to eat.

Watching him toss snacks into the shopping cart, Bai Yiyi’s lips twitched, “You don’t have to buy those for me, I won’t eat them.”

“Who said they were for you? I’m buying them for myself,” Gu Kai said, glancing at her sideways as he pushed the cart towards the checkout area.

Since Tongtong was at Wen Ran’s Home, Gu Kai dropped Bai Yiyi off outside Wen Ran’s home, telling her to get out, and without offering her some snacks, Bai Yiyi got out of the car, and he drove away.

“Yiyi, did my brother bring you back? Where is he?”

In the living room, Wen Ran was teaching a few little ones how to fold paper airplanes, with colorful planes scattered across the floor, the coffee table, and the sofa.

Looking at the messy living room, Bai Yiyi asked with a smile, “Ranran, what are you guys doing?”

Wen Ran raised an eyebrow, “Teaching the little ones how to fold paper airplanes. Tongtong is a bit older; she really gets it. Didn’t my brother come in?”

“No, he left.”

The smile faded slightly on Bai Yiyi’s face. Upon hearing that her dad had left, Tongtong, who was folding paper airplanes, took her creation in hand and started walking towards the entrance.

“Tongtong, come back. Your dad had to go because he has things to do.”

“Daddy, find daddy.”

Unhappy, Tongtong looked at Bai Yiyi, wondering why her dad didn’t come to see her before leaving.

Bai Yiyi picked her up, kissed her affectionately on the cheek, and said, “Daddy is busy, Tongtong has to be a good girl. He’ll come to see you after he’s done with his work.”

“Tongtong, come look at the paper frog Auntie folded for you. Here, it’s for you.”

From the sofa, Wen Ran waved the paper frog at Tongtong, catching the attention of Momo and Xinxin who immediately ran over, reaching out for it.

Bai Yiyi, holding Tongtong, returned to the front of the sofa, picking up the paper from the coffee table with a beaming smile, “Tongtong, how about mommy folds a frog for you?”

“Fold a daddy.”

“Pfft—”

Wen Ran couldn’t hold it in and burst into laughter.

Bai Yiyi’s mouth twitched, “Tongtong, mommy can’t fold your daddy, and also, daddies are not something you can have one after another, there is only one.”

Tongtong was very serious, and after speaking, he gazed at his mother with anticipation.

“Yiyi, has my brother returned to the hospital?”

Seeing this scene, curiosity dawned across Wen Ran’s brow; if there was nothing wrong, her brother wouldn’t just leave without coming inside.

Bai Yiyi shook her head, “I don’t know either, he didn’t say anything was wrong. As soon as I got out of the car, he drove away.”

“Did you guys have a fight?”

Wen Ran tilted her head, curiously looking at Bai Yiyi.

“No, what’s there to fight about with him? He’s been strange today, seems in a bad mood. Usually, he’s so sharp-tongued, he isn’t satisfied until he’s mocked me a few times, but today he didn’t even talk to me.”

“Hehe, let me give him a call and ask.”

Wen Ran narrowed her eyes, pulled out her phone, and said to Tongtong, “Tongtong, Auntie will call your daddy to come to find you, is that okay?”

“Okay, find daddy.”

Tongtong briskly agreed.

“Daddy, daddy.”

When Xinxin heard about making a phone call, her eyes lit up and her little face blossomed into a smile.

Suddenly, Ziyi took advantage of Xinxin looking up at Wen Ran, calling for daddy, stepping forward and snatching the airplane from her hand.

As Xinxin stood there startled for a moment before turning to snatch back, Ziyi threw his hand up, and the airplane flew out of his grasp.

“Fly fly.”

With a radiant smile, Ziyi pointed to the flying plane and said to an unhappy Xinxin, “Fetch.”

Meaning, he was telling Xinxin to pick it up and bring it back.

Xinxin, having had her airplane snatched and then being told to fetch, pouted her little mouth, just about to cry, when Momo, curious, glanced between Ziyi and Xinxin, called out, “Sister.”

Then she scampered over, picked up two airplanes and brought them back, one for Xinxin and one for Ziyi.

“Ziyi, don’t snatch Xinxin’s airplane again. If you want to play, go fetch it yourself, understand?”

After dialing Gu Kai’s number, Wen Ran softly warned.

Ziyi grinned sheepishly at Wen Ran, called out ‘Xinxin’ again, as if nothing had happened, and continued to launch his plane out of his hand.

This time Xinxin learned her lesson. Seeing Ziyi’s plane fly off, she quickly ran away from him, and then, imitating the pose her mother had just taught, she threw her own plane out.

“Hello, Ranran.”

After a few rings, Gu Kai’s voice came through, and through the phone waves, his tone was clear and cheerful, not like what Bai Yiyi said, unhappy.

Wen Ran had put the phone on speaker, and when Tongtong heard his father’s voice, he immediately called out joyfully, “Daddy, hug Tongtong.”
