Chapter 792: Chapter 776: Bears on the Loose

Yue Feng feigned calm, pulled out the military knife hanging at his waist, and held it in his hand. After taking a few deep breaths, he then adjusted the drone’s camera and whispered, “A bear! It’s rubbing against a tree upwind!”

After the adjustment, the camera soon captured a close-up of this black bear!

The creature stood over one and a half meters tall, covered in black fur, with a V-shaped white crescent below its neck.

“Damn, there’s actually a black bear around the campsite!”

“It’s so big, it must be an adult bear, right?”

“Be careful, Brother Feng. Bears are extremely dangerous!”

“Let’s go for it, no more fish or rabbit every day—let’s try some bear paw!”

Yue Feng lowered his voice and said, “This black bear seems to be an adult. Black bears are not on the protected list, hunting is allowed! But we only have simple self-defense weapons, we don’t stand a chance against it!

However, we’re lucky this time, we are downwind, and it hasn’t noticed us!

For safety’s sake, let’s not provoke it for now; let’s head back to camp and think of another plan!”

While talking, Yue Feng slowly bent down and stepped back until he was more than fifty meters away from the black bear, and only then did he slightly relax.

In less than a minute, Yue Feng’s back was completely soaked with sweat, all cold!

Despite Yue Feng’s relatively calm appearance, he was actually extremely anxious inside. This was no joke. To be serious, an encounter with an adult black bear without a powerful weapon could be life-threatening for ordinary people.

If it were only mid-sized wild animals like badgers, Yue Feng would still be fairly confident in ensuring his own safety. But if a bear came to the campsite, it would be different, even if it was a relatively small black bear, a male adult can weigh between 60 to 200kg!

This one, looking about one and a half meters tall, could easily weigh over 200 kilograms. Yue Feng’s knife, geared more towards self-defense and functionality, might not even break through a black bear’s defense in a fight, let alone inflict effective damage!

Only when he reached the edge of his line of sight did Yue Feng finally find a rock to sit on, gasping heavily with lingering fear.

“Damn, that was too dangerous just now! We’re lucky it didn’t discover us!” While speaking, Yue Feng gasped heavily, his heart pounding vigorously in his chest.

“Just let it go like this? What a pity!”

“This black bear doesn’t look as big as the ones I’ve seen on TV! I remember those bears looking like small tanks, but they weren’t this dark!”

“Upstairs, you must be silly. What you’re talking about are brown bears! They are two sizes bigger! Even adult black bears this size are extremely dangerous! Unless Brother Feng has a shotgun, it’s better not to provoke them. It’s not worth it!”

“Right! Safety first! Let’s catch some hares, eat some dried fish, gather some lichen and berries, and live well! Why bother with it? In wilderness survival, playing it safe is the essence! Even if you kill it, getting injured yourself would be a loss, not to mention greater risks!”

There were still some sensible people. Apart from the spectators who enjoyed the drama, many advised Yue Feng to prioritize his safety.

Yue Feng said, “Everyone’s right! Without considering weapons, it’s very difficult for a single person to fight and win against an adult black bear! Avoiding it is the best choice!

However, I’m a bit concerned. Generally, the territory radius of a black bear is over thirty kilometers—I’m not sure if our current location is within its territory or if it’s just passing through!

Our campsite is less than a kilometer away from here. I’m worried that if it discovers us, it might linger near our shelter, which could prove dangerous at night!”

“No other way, just be careful! Keep a watch, and always prioritize safety!”

“I should have brought a bow and arrow. If I had Brother No. Eight’s archery skills, we might have been able to kill the bear from a distance! Brother Black was making plans to hunt deer, but he lost it after chasing it for a long time!”

Yue Feng shook his head, “Stop thinking about it! Let’s take it one step at a time. Now that there are bears around, we can’t use that simple door anymore when we get back! It can’t stop a black bear! Our first task is to upgrade the cabin door!”

Returning to the camp with a hare, Yue Feng immediately started upgrading the cabin door.

He used a thicker pine as the frame, and using an axe and fire as tools, he carved holes into the trunk, then gradually sharpened pieces of wood and fitted them into the frame. He filled everything tightly with thin wooden pegs. It didn’t matter if it looked ugly; strength was the primary consideration.

After a tremendous effort, the door was transformed into something much sturdier. At bedtime, he would close the door and then brace it inside with two sticks. As long as the sticks, as thick as the mouth of a bowl, did not break, the door would hold!

Because of working on that door, Yue Feng had hardly done anything else during the day. By the time he realized it, it was already afternoon, and his stomach was growling from hunger—he hadn’t even eaten lunch!

He made a fire, took dried fish from the cellar to cook in a pot, and after drinking the hot fish soup, he finally felt a bit better.

That night, Yue Feng found it incredibly hard to fall asleep, thinking about the potential bear outside, like a Sword of Damocles hanging over his head, with no one knowing when the blade might fall.

Tossing and turning in the cabin till midnight, Yue Feng still had not fallen asleep.

Around 2 a.m., half-asleep and half-awake, Yue Feng suddenly heard the clanging and rattling sounds of discarded cans from the alarm outside.

Yue Feng sat up instantly as if his butt had been jabbed.

He hurriedly put on his jacket and then peeked outside through a crack in the cabin door!

There was no moon that night, and it was pitch-black outside; he couldn’t see anything, but the noise from the crushed tin cans continued like a fish line being pulled and dragged along, making sounds for a long time without cessation.

After about twenty minutes, the noise from the cans stopped! It seemed that the animal outside had managed to break free from the fish line alarm.

But the silence was short-lived. A few minutes later, Yue Feng heard heavy panting sounds coming from outside the door!

It’s hard to describe the sound, like a strong athlete panting heavily after running ten thousand meters, squatting there to rest!

The sound was rough but full of vigor!

Hearing this noise, Yue Feng immediately grabbed the military knife beside him!

Soon, the panting was overwhelmed by scraping sounds of claws, and the unidentified creature started furiously scratching outside the door.

Yue Feng mustered his courage and turned on the emergency light, slowly approaching the door.

The cabin door, made of raw wood, was sturdy enough, but not precise, and through the cracks, he could faintly see a bit of the outside.

He turned on the emergency light, and the noise outside paused,

Yue Feng flashed the light once, and through the cracks, he faintly saw black fur and a crescent of white.

It was a bear!
