Chapter 785: Chapter 769 Unexpected Gains (4000 Big Chapter)_2
“Let’s eat, and then get moving!”
Having made his plan, Yue Feng started to get busy!
He moved all the big and small stones from the surrounding area, stacking them within the designated area to form a rudimentary shape. Once that took form, he stopped, picked up his axe, and headed to the edge of the Pine Forest to chop wood.
Before personally swinging the axe for the first time, Yue Feng had no experience of chopping wood with such a tool, but after trying, he found it not too difficult!
The pines that grew in high latitudes, though hard, also had a certain brittleness. After swinging mightily and chopping more than ten blows in succession, he could carve a large notch into the trunk. Changing direction and chopping a few more times, a pine trunk as thick as a bowl then fell.
He trimmed the top of the tree simply, and a smooth, well-proportioned piece of timber was ready.
Having just arrived, it was when Yue Feng’s physical strength was at its best. He had worked non-stop for over four hours, and before he knew it, it was already past half-past two in the afternoon.
The actual progress was much faster than expected, as Yue Feng had chopped down at least twenty different-sized pine trees, and had piled up a good amount of wood around his dwelling.
With the stone foundation basically ready, he buried the trunks of the pines on either side into the ground, laid another trunk across them, and stacked the previously pruned treetop branches on top, completing a simple lean-to shelter.
After moving around, sweat was visible on Yue Feng’s forehead, and he sat on a stone to rest for a short while until his breathing steadied.
“Guys, the simple lean-to shelter for tonight’s stay is set up! After dawn tomorrow, we’ll continue building upon this foundation, so there’s no need for anything too complex!”
In the time that followed, I led everyone around the campsite and set up some snares to catch small animals!”
Fish is indeed our food, but we can’t just eat fish, other food sources need to be acquired!”
By setting traps, we can passively collect food, and this can greatly reduce the time spent looking for it!”
Some of you may be wondering what kind of traps I’m preparing to make? It doesn’t seem like I brought any materials for making traps, right? We’ve got this!”
As he spoke, Yue Feng took out a spool of PE line from his bag and waved it in the camera.
“Imported eight-braid number four PE line, with a straight tensile strength of over 20 kg. Twisted in double strands, it’s definitely strong enough to set up snares for small and medium-sized animals!”
“Come on, let’s go set some traps!”
As a village kid, Yue Feng spent a lot of time in his childhood following adults to set up rabbit snares in winter wheat fields. Among the General Skills he learned were many simple and practical trap-setting methods. With PE line, he could easily set them up.
Leaving the campsite, he chose a direction to walk in.
Even though it hadn’t snowed yet, in many places among the grass and shrubs, due to frequent movements, numerous animal trails could be seen. Soon, Yue Feng found a very fresh path.
“Look guys! This here is an animal trail often crossed by small animals. The grass is trampled to both sides, and a distinct trace has been made in the middle from frequent walking. I initially judge that this is likely a rabbit’s trail!”
“We can use the twigs from the bushes nearby to create a snare!”
Yue Feng casually took out his military knife, trimmed some small branches off a bush, leaving behind only a section about the thickness of his thumb.
He tested the branch by pressing on it and found it very resilient; it sprang back immediately once released.
He took out the spool of PE line, quickly estimated the length he needed, and cut the line with his knife, twisting two strands together to make one.
One end was tied to the bush branch and the middle to a shortened stick. A slipknot snare about the size of a bowl was left.
Two Y-shaped twigs were inserted on both sides to secure it, and a notch was carved in the middle of the stick to counterbalance the trigger device vertically, achieving balance. Then he positioned the slipknot right in the middle of the animal trail.
After setting it up, Yue Feng simply pulled the slipknot with a twig, triggering the device to lose balance and activate; the pressed bush branch shot up, and the snare tightly caught the twig that had triggered it.
A very simple device, but cleverly designed, highly sensitive, and easy to set up.
“Damn, that actually works? Feng, who taught you this stuff?”
“This trap is so much more sensitive than those clumsy nooses made with just a wire!”
“Learned something new! After doubling the PE line, it still maintains some stiffness, isn’t too soft, and yet is strong enough! Paired with this trap’s sliding knot, once triggered, there’s no escape!”
Yue Feng grinned and reset the trap to its triggered state, “Just a simple trigger mechanism! I’ve known how to do this since I was a kid! Set it upright to snare rabbits; lay it flat on the ground, and you can catch wild chickens or pigeons. It’s just a small trick, nothing to brag about!”
However, I need to stress to you guys here, according to domestic law, most wild animals are protected. It’s fine to just look—don’t randomly set up these traps and break the law, or the police will come knocking with fines!”
“After watching Brother Feng set up the trap, I suddenly feel that my impression of him was too one-dimensional before! Brother Feng is not just a fisherman; he’s an experienced hunter too!”
“Let’s move, move, move, there’s such a huge area around the camp to cover with traps! Stock up on plenty of food, and we’ll eat whatever we want!”
Showered with praise from the viewers, Yue Feng felt a surge of boldness rising in his chest: “Let’s go!”
Soon, Yue Feng took his tools and reel, and started wandering around.
He would set up a trap whenever he found a suitable spot, scouting the environment while he was at it, killing two birds with one stone!
He kept busy until after five o’clock, and by then Yue Feng had set up more than ten traps. He had also explored the area around the camp for at least 500 meters in radius.
On his way back, Yue Feng didn’t rush to return to the campsite. Since he was carrying his belongings and fishing gear in his backpack, and after setting up the traps, he decided to fish by the waterside for a while and settle dinner before heading back.
He wasn’t hungry, but he had worked up quite a sweat and was starting to feel thirsty!
Taking a different path, he headed toward the lake.
As he approached the lake, Yue Feng’s gaze was drawn to a dark red object beside the bushes.
“Eh? What’s this?” Yue Feng called out, striding over.
When he got closer, Yue Feng crouched excitedly.
“Haha, what a treasure I’ve found! Take a look, what’s this?” Yue Feng pulled out his military knife to prod at the rusty object, unearthing it from half-buried in the soil.
“A pot broken in half? Doesn’t quite look like it!”
“It’s just a piece of rusty metal, seems thoroughly corroded!”
“The blade of a shovel! But it looks severely rusted.”
Yue Feng dug out the object and, excitedly wiping off the soil, he weighed it in his hand.
“Right, this is a rusted shovel blade. The wooden handle has rotted away, but the blade still seems usable!”
As if to confirm his thoughts, Yue Feng scrapped the badly rusted shovel blade with his knife.
After he removed a large flake of rust, the metallic nature underneath was revealed!
Having confirmed it wasn’t completely rotten, Yue Feng banged the shovel blade against a rock for a while, then rubbed it back and forth in the sandy soil by the river, grinding off most of the rust on the surface.
“This area must have been visited by a mining company or geological surveyors or something like that! Along the way, we’ve also come across rust-covered tin cans and such. This shovel must have been brought by them!
Although it doesn’t look very appealing, it seems like it might still be useful with a new handle! This is quite a find!”
Yue Feng was feeling better than if he had caught three more fish!
In fact, before coming here, he had considered bringing an entrenching tool, but since the allowance was limited, after much deliberation, he gave the spot to harder-to-get fishing hooks and lures instead. And now, out on a stroll, he actually found a barely usable one. Once equipped with a handle and slightly polished, it would definitely be much faster for digging than using his hands.
Packing the shovel blade into his backpack, Yue Feng went over to the water’s edge, took out his fishing rod, and continued fishing!
After a day of hard work, the fish meat he had consumed around ten in the morning had long been digested, and dinner was yet to be secured!
