Chapter 396 - 396 385 Basic Skills of Casting a Rod

396: Chapter 385: Basic Skills of Casting a Rod 396: Chapter 385: Basic Skills of Casting a Rod At 7:55 in the morning, except for Zhao Zheng and Tingting, the other trainees had already arrived at the rendezvous point.

Today was the first day of practical training, and everyone had brought their gear, which filled the ground with fishing boxes and rod bags.

Instructor Yang Wenjian leisurely arrived at the rendezvous point and scanned the lined-up trainees.

Before he could speak, Zhao Zheng, carrying a fishing box and wearing a rod bag, panted as he ran over.

“Sorry, Instructor Yang, I was delayed by some matters!” Zhao Zheng set down his equipment and greeted the instructor.

Yue Feng had already requested leave for Zhao Zheng in advance.

Seeing Zhao Zheng arriving late, Yang Wenjian nodded and said nothing.

At this moment, Zhao Zhe and Chen Chen exchanged glances in the line, both seeing a hint of displeasure in each other’s eyes!

“Report, Instructor!” Unable to hold back, Zhao Zhe raised his hand to report.

Yang Wenjian looked up and swept his gaze over the round-faced Zhao Zhe: “Zhao Zhe, what is it?”

“I can’t understand why others can be late without consequence, but we get points deducted when we’re late?” Zhao Zhe asked.

“Exactly, why are only our points deducted!” Chen Chen added resentfully.

The atmosphere became tense all of a sudden.

Yang Wenjian was slightly startled, then casually opened the attendance book, pointing to a remark at the bottom, “Others are unpenalized because they recorded their leaves in advance!

Any problem with that?”

Zhao Zhe, usually quick-witted, seemed to have a fogged mind today.

Boldly, he stepped out of line to glance at the attendance book in the instructor’s hand.

In the leave remark section, there indeed was a record made in advance by Yue Feng.

“Oh!” Zhao Zhe regretfully shrank his neck and returned to the line.

Yang Wenjian hadn’t had a high opinion of Zhao Zhe to begin with, and today’s direct challenge made it even harder for the instructor to maintain his dignity.

Seeing Zhao Zhe return to the line, Yang Wenjian gave him a meaningful look.

“Since questions have been raised regarding our discipline, I’ll take this opportunity to re-emphasize it to everyone!

During your time at Hua School, you are principally not allowed to go out without cause!

If you have special matters that necessitate leaving, you may seek permission from me or the class leader accordingly.

Approval will be granted depending on the situation before you can go out!

Those who go out without authorization, act first and report later, will receive the same punishment as those avoiding training and missing classes!

If other adverse effects are caused, the person responsible will be held accountable!

Assembly is not only for training physical strength but also demands that everyone abides by the rules and maintains a proper attitude!

Alright, everyone, gather your equipment and line up; follow me to the Practice Pole Pond!!”

After reiterating the rules, the instructor led the trainees straight to Hua School’s Practice Pole Pond.

The vast expanse of Hua School included several Practice Pole Ponds—two standard ones near the factory area and a smaller test pole pit behind the Research and Development Department.

Besides these three Practice Pole Ponds, there were two pits normally used for internal training by the Hua Clan Fishing Club on its premises, plus an indoor venue at the CFL Transparent Pond, making a total of six.

Instructor Yang led them to the Practice Pole Pond near the small building where the trainees attended classes; a large group carrying equipment marched briskly and reached their destination in about seven or eight minutes.

Yue Feng and Zhao Zheng were also hurrying along with the crowd, as Yue Feng glanced toward the direction of the dormitory door and asked softly, “Where’s Tingting?

Didn’t you come back together?”

Zhao Zheng scratched his head and replied, “We came back together, she’s in the dorm!

To avoid drawing attention and causing a bad influence, I didn’t let her come out with us.

Anyway, we’ve already greeted and asked for leave, she’ll come over later when the timing is staggered!”

Yue Feng didn’t think much about it, nodded his head, and hurried along.

Soon, the large group arrived at the Practice Pole Pond.

The two Practice Pole Ponds were both very standard Competition Pond styles, oriented east-west, about 40 meters in length, 22 meters in width, each pond had an oxygenator in the middle position, and from the looks of it, the water quality in the ponds seemed quite decent, slightly greenish in the yellow.

“Before starting the free practice, let me talk about the standard actions of Taiwan Fishing casting.

First, set aside your equipment; you’ll have a chance to practice soon.

Everyone, come here!”

Yang Wenjian called out, and everyone obediently put aside their equipment and regrouped.

Yang Wenjian took out his own 3.6-meter fishing rod, and placed the fishing box, bait box, water basin, and line box into their appropriate spots, then turned around and looked at everyone.

“In casual fishing, it might not matter!

But in formal competitive Taiwan Fishing, every single second is incredibly precious.

The basics of casting and the preliminary preparations need your attention, developing good habits can significantly enhance your fishing performance later on.

First and foremost, the placement of the fishing box!

Normally, in competitions, the fishing box needs to be aligned with the front edge of the pond; the fishing area is directly in front!”

When placing the fishing box, make sure it’s not misaligned or skewed, as even a slanted fishing box can affect the precision of your casting and may result in your bait landing off-target!

Having discussed the placement of the fishing box, moving on to the other preparatory work, place the line box behind you where it’s easily reachable, along with your towel, water basin, and landing net—their placement must be logical so they can be grabbed effortlessly when needed.

If you don’t have specific habits, you might refer to my current setup!!

After details of the setup are complete, we’ll start with the technical essentials of Taiwan Fishing casting.

For short rods, we normally use a sitting posture, baiting involves holding the rod with the right hand with the middle finger and ring finger pinching about seven or eight centimeters above the double hooks.

If it’s ragworm fishing, bait the lower hook first, then the upper hook, complete double baiting on hooks, then use the left hand to naturally separate the double hooks.

Keeping the upper arm stationary, the forearm leads the wrist to forcefully cast the line assembly directly into the designated spot in front!”

He briefly discussed the movements, then Instructor Yang gave a personal demonstration.

He quickly baited the hooks, then separated them and with a gentle force, cast the double bait right into the designated spot.

His fingers pinching the handle, he gently pulled back to tighten the water line, finished!

The entire process had not a single superfluous movement, presenting a very pleasing fluidity.

“Short rods are relatively easier to cast, and with some practice, everyone can quickly get the hang of it!”

Having covered the basic postures and motions, I’ll now talk about how to achieve precision in casting.

The simplest way for novices to learn Taiwan Fishing is to choose a fixed reference point on the opposite side, such as a marker, another fisher’s fishing box, a tree trunk, a trash can—anything will work!

When casting, use that chosen point as your reference, cast forward normally without shifting the position under your butt or the reference point, and you naturally will be able to control the hook’s landing within a smaller designated area!”

While speaking, the instructor demonstrated again, baiting the hooks, casting, and tightening the water line, remaining as pleasing to the eye as before.
