Chapter 270 - 270 269 The Draw
270: Chapter 269 The Draw 270: Chapter 269 The Draw Yue Feng was somewhat baffled.
Big Brother Liu’s network was incredibly wide, having acquaintances even next to the competition site was something, but to have a spot in the yard for parking was expected, he even personally used an electric tricycle to transport the equipment over, which was awesome.
“Not bad, Brother Liu, I’m curious about how you know this gentleman!” Yue Feng slung his Fishing Box over his back and in one hand carried his Rod Bag and other gear, casually asking.
Liu Fengnian chuckled: “Nothing much, I used to hang out at Old Ge’s Competition Pond for a while, and the old man liked to watch the bustle when he had nothing better to do.
We got acquainted over time, and after one competition where I got some results, the old man was there too, and he invited me to dine with him, and our relationship gradually warmed up!
Later on, when I was practicing my casting in the pond and had nothing to do at noon, I’d buy some drinks and dishes and go have a few glasses with the old man.
You can’t tell from his plain clothes, but he was the principal at the city’s No.
1 Middle School for half his life!
In society, a person’s standing all depends on friends.
And friends, you can’t make them just when you need them.
But you, you’re alright.
Not like some young folks these days, so utilitarian!
It’s good!”
Big Brother Liu’s advice to Yue Feng was reflected in every aspect, even in trivial matters like parking and transporting equipment.
Whenever Yue Feng showed interest in asking questions, Big Brother Liu took the opportunity to give him a few pointers.
Yue Feng nodded, taking the advice to heart.
The two of them had just entered the gate with their equipment when someone not far away called out to Old Liu.
“Hey, Old Liu, this way!”
Liu Fengnian looked up, a smile on his face as he strode over to exchange warm greetings with the other person.
Yue Feng didn’t know many people.
He only recognized Bai Xu, Zhou Tao, and a few Anglers he had met at Black Pit but didn’t know well.
But it was different for Old Liu — almost everywhere he went on the fishing field, he had acquaintances greeting him, his experience and connections were on full display at that moment.
Today was the official competition, so before entry, the pits were cordoned off with red ropes, and the participants could only prepare in the area outside the pits.
It was Yue Feng’s first time participating in such a formal competition, so everything seemed very novel to him.
The difference made by a city-level Fishing Association was evident — a group of service staff, all dressed in uniform with caps, were gathered together waiting.
There were also two individuals in formal attire, clearly experienced fishers, with referees’ badges hanging around their necks, likely in charge of the official adjudication after the competition started.
After about five minutes, Zhang Fenglin arrived at the competition site, carrying steaming hot buns and soy milk, having bought breakfast for both Yue Feng and Liu Fengnian.
“Eat first!
The opening ceremony is about to start!” Old Zhang called out.
Without any pretense, Yue Feng and Liu Fengnian sat in a corner and gobbled up their food.
After filling their bellies, it was about six o’clock, and the entire field was bustling with noise, filled with Anglers squatting on the ground and preparing their Bait Opening for the battles to come.
Compared to the casual setting of the Black Pit, the Fishermen at the competition scene had different equipment.
The Anglers, whether it was their Sunscreen Clothing, hats, or Fishing Boxes, all had a distinctive flair.
The 26L boxy little Fishing Boxes were almost standard issue, and those with more “bullets” in their pockets often used Dawa.
The wholesalers where Yue Feng ordered his stock carried the Dawa brand, and one little box genuinely cost over a thousand yuan.
The professionalism of Fishing Hats and Sunscreen Clothing was even more obvious.
Guangwei Cup, Laogui Cup, Hua Clan, and other such words were common sights.
The clothing worn by the Anglers was basically from participating in various competitions, unlike the attire of ordinary fishermen from wild fishing in Black Pit, the contestants exuded professionalism from head to toe.
At 6:20, Lu Yong from the Fishing Association arrived at the fishing grounds, and a few minutes later, a loudspeaker announcement called all competing team members to gather and prepare for the draw to enter the field.
Upon hearing the call for assembly and drawing lots, everyone dropped what they were doing and swarmed over.
Yue Feng mixed in with the crowd.
Thanks to Brother Liu, Yue Feng knew the details of the competition early: two ponds, one for mixed fish and one for target fish.
The participants would decide which competition to start with based on drawing lots, with both contests running concurrently, and the final rankings determined by Total Points.
Here, there is a particular aspect of competitive fishing that differs from other sports.
Competitive fishing tournaments adopt a reverse point system, which is essentially a minor points system.
What does this mean?
The place that participants achieve in the competition is the score they receive.
In a single match, the person who ranks first in their group accrues one point, second place gets two points, third place, three points.
If there is an overlap in rankings, such as both fourth and fifth place having the same tail number or weight, the points are averaged, so each receives 4.5 points.
After two matches, the participants’ scores are cumulative, still ranked by minor points first, followed by major points.
In cases where the composite scores are the same, the best single match result is compared.
For example, if both have a total of four points, but one has scores of one and three points from two matches and the other has two points from each match, the former would rank ahead and the latter behind.
This scoring system is reasonably fair and also has its unique aspects; it requires competitors’ techniques to be consistently stable to achieve good results.
If someone scores one point in three matches but scores zero in the last match, they can only end up at the bottom of their group with the highest number of points, which can easily be twenty or thirty.
The total points would then be in the dozens.
In certain competitions with underwhelming fish activity, this leads to the peculiar phenomenon where catching a single fish can topple a whole group.
“Attention all athletes, those whose names are called, please come forward to draw lots!”
It was still Lu Yong hosting the draw; with 80 fishing spots filled, even the verification of the draw was omitted.
Before long, Yue Feng heard his name called and responded.
He strode confidently to the box for drawing lots.
There is a difference with the Black Pit drawing: the lot-drawing box is very orderly and covered at the opening with a black cloth so the inside cannot be seen.
Following instructions, Yue Feng reached into the box and grabbed a lot.
He then showed it to everyone.
The lot used for the competition was markedly different from those in the Black Pit, printed on special ink paper and rolled into a small scroll.
Yue Feng unfurled the scroll and saw it read “Zone A, No.
11.”
“Not bad, the position is good!” Lu Yong glanced at the number and commented casually.
The competition’s fishing positions were reassigned by the referee team’s staff early in the morning.
Position A11 was located at the midsection of the southern bank of the small crucian carp pit, right next to an aerator.
Aside from the big edge positions, this was considered one of the best spots.
“Heh heh, pretty lucky!” Yue Feng scratched his head and chuckled awkwardly as a response.
Lu Yong reminded him, “Stay steady, have a good competition, don’t panic!”
“Got it!”
After drawing lots, Yue Feng moved on to the next step in the process.
Equipment verification!
Rules in competitive fishing are quite strict.
There is no restriction on the brand of equipment used, but there is a stringent requirement for the length of the rod: it must be within one centimeter of the regulation size.
For competitions targeting small crucian carp, the rod limit is 3.6 meters, and for mixed-stock fish, it’s 4.5 meters.
Yue Feng brought his rod bag, took out his competition rod, and walked over to the staff member.
