Chapter 153 - 153 153 Making a Nest
153: Chapter 153: Making a Nest 153: Chapter 153: Making a Nest When he began fishing, Yue Feng had made a preliminary judgment that the fish didn’t favor red worms but were rather partial to soft sticky bait.
Now, with further analysis, he realized it wasn’t just an affinity for soft sticky bait; they preferred pellets!
Having made his judgment, Yue Feng’s next move was much simpler.
He turned to the side, poured a handful of rubber band pellets into his hand, and casually stuffed them into his pants pocket.
Fishing is all about being clever, and obviously, Yue Feng didn’t lack in that department.
Earthworm pellets could be bought anywhere, and for all he knew, the clueless guy next to him might have had some in his fishing box.
Yue Feng’s subtle movement was meant to keep his competitor from noticing as much as possible.
Right now, Li Cungen was still bent over, crouched down, and re-preparing his bait, hardly paying any attention to Yue Feng’s situation.
Soon, Yue Feng got back to fishing as usual.
After the Loose Powder bait settled in the water, it dispersed more quickly.
With a pellet on the hook, the Loose Powder would completely dissolve before hitting the bottom.
The way he baited his hook looked just like he was grabbing a fistful for making a feeding spot; without taking a close look, one really couldn’t see that there was a rubber band pellet hidden beneath the Loose Powder.
So, in less than ten minutes of readjusting, Yue Feng’s fishing spot was getting bites again.
After a few tries, Yue Feng discovered that after switching to earthworm pellets, he didn’t even need to wait for a bite; as soon as the float showed any sign of a bite, he could lift the rod and the fish would be caught firmly by the mouth.
His fishing efficiency was now even higher!
Li Cungen, who had just disrupted Yue Feng’s rhythm with his Lead Skin feeding tactic, was initially quite pleased.
But seeing Yue Feng continue to get bites in quick succession, Li Cungen became frustrated again!
While the Lead Skin tactic was effective in causing trouble, one couldn’t just sit there and do only that; it was like asking for a fight!
In his life in society, Brother Gen had been thick-skinned, but this time he was a bit more rational.
Li Cungen, lacking the ability to make proper judgements about the fish’s behavior, felt conflicted and incredibly curious.
It hadn’t been long, and fishing had picked up again.
What in the world was this guy using?
After watching for a few catches, he still couldn’t figure it out.
From his angle, Yue Feng’s method appeared to be just the regular Loose Powder technique, the only difference being his Loose Powder bait seemed a bit larger.
With Yue Feng consistently reeling in fish, Li Cungen couldn’t hold back anymore.
He hesitated for a long time, then, thick-faced, approached Yue Feng and asked, “Hey, buddy!
What brand of bait or lure are you using?
How come it’s so effective?”
Yue Feng was focused on casting his line when he heard Li Cungen’s question, and he was taken aback.
How thick-skinned could this man be, knowing full well he wasn’t liked, yet still shamelessly coming over to ask?
Yue Feng wondered where he got his confidence from.
“I’m using Loose Powder,” Yue Feng replied vaguely, continuing to cast his line.
As he baited the hook with the rubber band pellet, he purposely shielded it with his palm to keep the nosy neighbor from getting a clear view.
Having hit a soft nail, Li Cungen went into a sulk.
Watching others get a string of bites while his own Loose Powder bait drew nothing but silence, Li Cungen started to get devious thoughts.
If there were no fish on his side, why not probe nearby, right into the edge of his rival’s feeding spot?
What does ‘probing a feeding spot’ mean?
It means casting one’s own line into someone else’s productive fishing spot, essentially fishing for their fish.
This is a common occurrence in Black Pit and is usually something familiar friends do among themselves while playing.
It’s one thing when close friends do it, but it’s quite another when strangers do so—it’s overstepping the boundaries.
On his next cast, Li Cungen crumpled two balls of bait and threw them towards Yue Feng’s spot.
There was a certain distance between fishing spots, and Li Cungen could only just about reach a position six or seven decimeters approximately beside Yue Feng’s feeding spot.
Even so, that was enough!
Yue Feng’s plentiful scattering of Loose Bait in the water lured fish, turning the whole feeding area into a misting zone.
The spot where Li Cungen was probing was right between the misting zone and a normal area, and there were plenty of fish nearby!
After the bait had settled, it took less than half a minute for Li Cungen’s float to show a fish taking the bait.
The bait was kneaded into quite large pieces, and the line assembly was also very thick, so the movement of the fish biting was only about half-noticeable, sticking and muddling without decisiveness.
Even so, Li Cungen still managed to strike and hook a fish!
This time, he was lucky and hit a straight one, violently dragging the fish to the surface, and soon scooped it up with his net, unhooking it and taking it home!
He finally caught a fish and Li Cungen exclaimed with delight!
Having tasted success, Li Cungen kneaded more soft sticky bait and cast it down again.
In no time at all, his float showed another bite!
It was still the same sticky, indecisive kind of bite!
This time, Li Cungen wasn’t as lucky as with the previous catch.
He still violently jerked the rod with both hands in his trademark style!
But the hook was set too shallow, and the fish got off before it could be brought up out of the water.
“Damn!” Li Cungen muttered under his breath, scratching his head in irritation as he grabbed the thick line to cast again.
In fact, when Li Cungen made his first strike, Yue Feng had already noticed, but since it was quite far from his own core fishing spot, and the float landed roughly in the middle of the boundary between their fishing positions, he didn’t make much of a fuss about it.
There were plenty of fish in his spot, so he wasn’t worried about a fish or two, and since the person next to him wasn’t being too excessive, Yue Feng didn’t want to be too confrontational.
But when Li Cungen lost a fish at the bottom on the next cast, Yue Feng began to get annoyed!
Losing a fish at the bottom might seem similar in outcome to losing one at the surface, but the impact was significantly greater.
A fish getting away at the bottom could greatly disturb the fish school.
It was akin to dropping a big stone into the fish’s nest, while losing the hook at the surface was much less impactful.
Protecting and managing one’s own fishing spot is something experienced fishermen pay the most attention to when at Black Pit, and Li Cungen spoiling the good fishing at the start was the main reason for this.
“Hey!
That’s enough already, how can anyone else fish with you doing that?” Yue Feng couldn’t help but yell out.
Without the shout, it would have been fine.
But, the yell threw Li Cungen, who was already frustrated from losing the fish, off balance.
He stiffened his neck and shot a glance in Yue Feng’s direction.
“What did I do?
Isn’t losing a fish pretty normal?”
“Lose your fish in your own spot if you want.
I don’t care if you breach my fishing spot, but you’re trying to justify losing the fish?” Yue Feng was infuriated by the other man’s disrespectful response.
“So what if I did?
What are you going to do about it, bite me?”
On hearing this, Yue Feng immediately stood up and bellowed, “Boss, someone’s breaching the fishing spots here, aren’t you going to do something about this?”
What was a minor conflict escalated with Yue Feng’s shouts, drawing the attention of all the anglers in the fishing ground.
He Wenlong, who had been busy organizing fishing activities all morning and had just settled down for a bit of rest, heard someone calling and immediately rushed over toward Yue Feng.
“Xiao Yue, what’s the situation?” He Wenlong had remembered Yue Feng’s name since the draw, and greeted him right away.
“Do those rules you announced before fishing started count for anything?
I landed a good spot on the edge, but this guy here keeps breaching the spot and losing fish.
Are you going to deal with it?”
Since the gloves were off, Yue Feng didn’t leave any face for Li Cungen.
With things at this point, he certainly wasn’t going to indulge him.
