First-Year Internship—And You Went to Site 749 to Contain Monsters?!
Chapter 26: The Intern Investigator Takes Office in Bao Fan District? A Tough Welcome Awaits

“You sure know a lot. Someone like you isn’t suited for frontline work—you’re better off in management.”

Lu Ding casually remarked.

“Oh, come on, Lu Ge, with my combat ability? If I went into management, no one would take me seriously.”

Lu Ding glanced at him and teased, “So, you actually have that ambition? Damn, Yan Feifan, you’re bold enough to dream of becoming an official?!”

That scared Yan Feifan stiff. He quickly waved his hands in denial. “No, no, Lu Ge, I don’t!”

“Hahahaha, I’m just messing with you. Relax a bit. Alright, we’re almost done eating, time to head to Bao Fan District.”

Yan Feifan froze. “Wait! Lu Ge, I haven’t even eaten yet!”

“That’s what you get for talking too much. Let this be a lesson.”

“Lu Ge, that’s not fair! Weren’t you the one who asked me to talk?”

Lu Ding was just joking, of course. He wouldn’t actually stop him from eating.

Yan Feifan hurriedly downed his porridge and stuffed his mouth with buns, finishing up in no time.

And with that, it was time to report to Bao Fan District!

Bao Fan District Public Security Bureau.

As 749 Bureau’s special district managers, Bei Heguang and Ming Jun had their office on the top floor—spacious, with a great view.

But because of one mistake, they now had to give it up.

On top of that, they were being sent back to face punishment from the Bureau.

At this moment, the two were packing up their belongings.

Ming Jun glanced around and sighed. “Ah Guang, are you really okay with just leaving like this?”

“No sh*t, of course I’m not okay with it. We haven’t even checked out what’s behind that damn door yet. There’s definitely something valuable there, but what can we do? We screwed up. That’s just how it is—we have to accept it.”

Back then, they had failed to eliminate the White-Furred Hou because they were distracted by the treasures they found while chasing it.

Initially, they had planned to kill the White-Furred Hou first and then collect the goods.

But when they saw that massive stone door carved with mystical symbols, they changed their minds.

The door had to be opened first—there had to be something incredible behind it.

Better to seize the opportunity before someone else showed up.

But in the end, they failed to open the door, and the White-Furred Hou escaped.

Later, they went back to check, and the stone door was still tightly shut.

They tried every possible method, but nothing worked.

Their plan was to slowly chip away at it over time, accepting any punishment the Bureau might throw at them.

After all, it wasn’t like they’d be reassigned before their term was up, right?

Turns out, they really were reassigned.

When the transfer order came down, it felt like the sky was falling.

Now, hearing Bei Heguang say, “It’s fate. Just accept it.”

Ming Jun snapped. “Bullsh*t fate! I climbed from an ordinary person to a Cultivator of Qi—that’s because fate favored me! I went from an intern investigator to a full investigator—that’s because fate blessed me! And now I run into this stone door? That’s my damn reward!”

“If I leave just like this, I won’t accept it!!”

Bei Heguang put down his things and crossed his arms. “Then tell me, what’s your brilliant plan?”

“Uh…”

“Anyway, do you know who’s replacing us?”

“Are you dumb? The Bureau keeps these things locked down tight. Who the hell would know? I’m not management.”

“I thought you had connections? Can’t you ask around?”

Bei Heguang hesitated. “I guess I could make some calls.”

“Hurry up and do it! Quit hesitating!!”

Bei Heguang pulled out his phone and tapped into his network.

After a while, his brows furrowed. “That’s odd. This doesn’t follow standard procedure.”

“Well? What did you find out?” Ming Jun asked anxiously.

“I got half the story. My contact only heard bits and pieces, but apparently, the new patrol officer for Bao Fan District was assigned on short notice. And… they’re an intern investigator. No info on who it is, though.”

“An intern investigator? In Bao Fan District? That’s basically a death sentence! Either they pissed someone off, or they screwed up and got thrown here on purpose.”

Bei Heguang gave him a look like he was an idiot. “Or… maybe they’re actually really skilled and got fast-tracked here?”

Ming Jun thought for a moment. “That’s possible, but none of the top-tier people seem like a match. The most formidable interns right now are… Bai Heming, but he’s still in solitary confinement.”

“Then there’s Dantai Xianyue—she caused such a huge mess in Ninglong City, no way she got reassigned here.”

“The rest have all been promoted to full investigators, so that doesn’t fit either.”

“You’re forgetting one more. The one who made a name for himself in Baiyao Ancient Town. The one who took down Yuan Baifeng on the highway. The Corpse-Shattering Taishui, Lu Ding.”

That name had been circulating like wildfire last night.

Even though they had been busy with their own issues, they had still caught wind of the rumors.

A perfect evaluation. A Zhaoxuan Realm investigator who killed a Linghai Realm opponent. And anyone who died by his hands… didn’t leave a whole corpse.

The more they thought about it, the scarier it sounded.

Ming Jun shook his head. “I doubt it. A famous warrior is never undeserving of their reputation, but Lu Ding just completed a mission yesterday. And it was a huge one. Plus, he had Wen Yuquan leak information about the Wind-Fixing Pearl. Right now, Wen Yuquan and Yin Feng are both on administrative leave. No way he’d be transferred here alone. At the very least, he’d need a full investigator with him. Two interns? I can’t think of any real heavy-hitters that fit that criteria.”

His reasoning made sense.

Even Bei Heguang started to second-guess himself.

“Alright, fine. What’s the plan, then?”

Ming Jun shrugged. “Most likely, they’re just some decent interns. Here’s the deal—when the new guys arrive, we’ll check if we recognize them. If we do, we play nice and split the profits.”

“If we don’t, we’ll make their lives miserable until they report back that they can’t handle Bao Fan District.”

“That way, we buy ourselves a few more days. And in those few days, we open that damn tomb door.”

“If they are someone we recognize, we’ll negotiate. Keep it friendly and split everything evenly.”

It was a solid plan—assess the newcomers and adjust accordingly.

Flawless.

Except for one crucial oversight.

Neither Ming Jun nor Bei Heguang had ever actually seen Lu Ding before.

They only knew his name and reputation.

“Alright, sounds good. Let’s do it.”

With that decided, they stopped packing and waited.

Not long after, Lu Ding and Yan Feifan arrived at the entrance.

A call went through, and soon enough, Bao Fan District’s Public Security Bureau chief and a group of high-ranking officials personally came out to welcome them.

Smiling from ear to ear, they were practically beaming with joy.

Finally, new 749 Bureau patrol officers had arrived.

The previous two weren’t terrible, per se, but they were far from good either.

And during their already short tenure, they had caused a ton of problems.

This latest fiasco alone had cost dozens of civilian lives.

It had made everyone’s jobs infinitely harder.

But that was in the past.

The new patrol officers were here now.

Hopefully, they’d be more reliable.

“Comrade, hello. I’m Gao Zhengliang, Chief of Bao Fan District Public Security Bureau.”
