Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story -
Chapter 320: Going To Die
Chapter 320: Going To Die
I knew, without a doubt, that staring a zombie in the eye wasn’t the smartest move to make. Like most animals, they took that as a sign of aggression and challenge. But the woman beside me didn’t seem to know that.
She continued to stare at it for a few minutes before the zombie shifted subtly.
Letting out a roar, the zombie launched itself at her, ripping into her neck and drenching me in the arterial spray. She didn’t even have time to scream before she died, her body sinking to the ground at my feet.
Fucking hell. They needed to be cleaner when they ate.
Blood pooled around my feet, the warm, sticky liquid covering me like a second skin.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the zombie turn around to look at me, its massive head cocked to the side.
I froze, my eyes down at the ground, and I slowly breathed, not giving in to the fear that threatened to come out. I knew that if I did, I was going to die. Even if I managed to kill this one, there was a whole army behind him, ready to fill in the gap.
The zombie sniffed at me for a second before turning its attention to all of the humans on the other side of the flimsy fence.
Even I could smell their fear as one of the women let out a plaintive whimper. They didn’t dare to speak, didn’t dare to move, but it wasn’t going to be enough to save them.
Letting out another roar, the zombie beside me turned its back on me as it and the rest of the zombies launched themselves over the gates and onto the waiting humans.
It was a blood bath.
The humans didn’t stand a chance.
Letting out the breath I didn’t know I was holding, I continued to look down, letting music invade my brain. I might not know the words to the songs that were on repeat in my head, but it was enough to calm me down.
That was until I could see a set of massive feet enter my vision.
"Look...up," grunted the zombie, and I knew that this was the Alpha. I had heard rumors in Camp Hell that they were the only ones to be able to speak, and it seemed like it was true.
Raising my head so it didn’t look like I was disobeying him, I stared at a spot on his shoulder.
It cocked its head to the side as it studied me like I was an oddity.
"Why here?" demanded the Alpha, his broken voice coming out as sharp as glass.
"The humans thought you would leave them alone if they sacrificed me," I answered calmly. It was eerily easy to fall back into the same headspace as I had in Camp Hell when dealing with Alpha.
"You aren’t scared," stated the zombie in front of me as it grabbed my chin and turned my face until I was staring at him. "Why?"
"I don’t know," I replied honestly. Maybe it was because I couldn’t feel a threat from it, or maybe it was because I had spent time with the Reavers that this version of them didn’t scare me.
"You don’t smell human," grunted the zombie as it leaned forward until his face was pressed against my neck. "Human and Reaver scent on you... but you don’t smell human."
I was stunned. Of course, I smelled human. How else would I smell?
"I won’t kill you," it grunted, coming to a conclusion. "But the humans here are fair game."
Its words sent fear down my spine. "I’ll make you a deal. I have nine males to protect and a building. If you leave them alone, I will heal you."
I would be the first to admit that it was a rash plan. I had no idea if it wanted to be healed or if I could even turn it back into a human, but I had to try.
I had been separated from my men, and there was no way they would be able to survive on their own.
Hell, I didn’t even know if I was going to survive this. The original plan was to be long gone before all of this happened. And then there was plan B. I think my current plan was Plan F... as in fucked.
"Nine males and a building?" grunted the Alpha as he pulled my face in closer to his, creating even more of a strain on my arms and shoulders.
"You might not get into the building. There is a tree protecting it, but yes, nine males and a building."
"Fine, let’s see what you can do," grunted the Alpha again. His vocabulary might have increased, but his pacing and tone were still off, like someone who wasn’t speaking English as a first language.
Did zombies have their own language? They must, right?!?
Huh, didn’t see that coming.
"You first," I said firmly. "I want my males in front of me before I heal you."
I really didn’t think that he would be able to find them, but just in case, it was worth a shot.
Letting out a roar, the Alpha sneered at me before leaving me and going into the base, leaping over the six-foot fence like it was nothing.
Here goes nothing.
Closing my eyes, I waited for the Alpha to return. I wasn’t going to piss him off by escaping, even if I could. If he managed to find the guys, then I was more than willing to fulfill my end of the bargain if it meant we got out of here safely.
----
Bai Long Qiang launched a fireball at the zombie that had picked up Wang Chang Ming and threw him over its shoulder. However, the fire was not strong enough to really hurt the creature.
Instead, it just shrugged it off and continued out of the door of Bin An Sha’s condo.
"Where’s Wang Tian Mu?" screamed Rip as he frantically looked around the blood-covered living room. It was saturated with different colors of the fluid from red to purple to blue.
"I don’t know!" yelled back Fan Teng Fei as he tried his best to fight off the two zombies on either side of him. However, he couldn’t finish them off completely. "I haven’t seen her in a while!"
They were going to die. There was no other plan, no way to escape this situation alive.
But Fan Teng Fei wouldn’t give up without a fight. He needed to find his Treasure. Only then would he submit to death.
