Chapter 242: Never A Good Thing
Chapter 242: Never A Good Thing
The sun had yet to rise on the second day after we left Chang Guo Zi and the other teams when we arrived at the outskirts of City B.
We had left the other teams in the dust, literally and figuratively speaking. My ability to pull the energy from everything around me and give it to the guys meant that they never tired. Of course, the hundreds of zombies that we had come across had helped with that, too.
"This—" grunted Cheng Bo Jing as the eight of us stood next to a sign welcoming us to City B. "This is not what I pictured at all."
That seemed to be a common statement lately. Nothing ever appeared the way I expected it to, and that left a bit of disappointment in its wake.
For example, knowing that this city was a zombie occupied one, I had pictured chain linked fences as humans fought valiantly against the zombie hordes trying to get out. Claws would have pushed through the holes in the metal, and zombies would have been shaking the fence, trying to get to their delicacies just out of reach. Flesh would have been coming off of them in chunks as bright red blood dried on their clothes.
The screams that the zombies made while being denied their food should have echoed through the air as humans raised their guns to take on the threat, even knowing that they didn’t stand a chance.
That was the situation I had expected to find myself in when I arrived here. I had come up with different situations where I would need to draw the energy of the zombies in order to weaken them enough to be killed.
Or my men would have to prove their abilities and powers by confronting the horde to give the other people a chance to relax.
You know, something out of a TV show or movie...
But, apparently, Hollywood lied to me and this just went to prove that you really couldn’t trust everything you saw on TV.
"Well?" asked Si Dong as he looked at me. "What do we do?"
"We find supplies, take everything we can, including the stuff for the princess, and leave," I shrugged, not sure what else to do. "But we don’t tell anyone about this."
I waved my hand to indicate everything around us. I didn’t even have the words to tell people what we saw, let alone do anything to encourage them to come here.
The road into City B was completely open, not a zombie in sight. There were no cars littering the streets, the buildings, while damaged, were standing tall and proud, and a deer crossed the road right in front of us. Completely unconcerned about humans around.
It was how I had pictured Eden, minus the skyrises. All it needed was more green space.
A butterfly flew in the air right in front of me, only to be snatched out of the sky by Hei.
"I don’t think that was necessary," I snarked to the crow, sticking out my tongue.
He let out a loud call before taking off, disappearing in the distance.
Ye Yao Zu quietly took my hand and led me forward deeper into the city. The rest of the men fanned out around us, their guns raised as they constantly scanned the area, waiting for an ambush.
It was eerie how calm and quiet everything was.
Bird chirped as insects buzzed around us, attracted to our sweat and the dirt caked onto our skin. I could hear the barking of foxes as two kits tumbled across the road in front of us, play fighting with each other. Their mother walked lazily behind them, stopping only for a minute to look at us before turning her attention to the kits.
Nature was starting to take the city over, but I had yet to see a single zombie.
Walking for a few more hours, we finally got to the city center. It was just like every other part we had seen so far. Weeds poked through the concrete roads, trying to reach the sunlight as wild animals made themselves at home.
And still...
Not a single zombie.
How was this a zombie-infested city that struck fear into the hearts of everyone who heard its name?
"I remember this mall," said Fan Teng Fei softly as he came to a stop and looked around at a large building in front of us. "It should have everything that the bitch needs and more."
"Perfect," I nodded. It looked like one of the high-end malls before the end of the world... a modern style of windows and metal. It was also the size of several blocks and would take us the rest of today and possibly even tomorrow to go through everything. "Will you have enough space, or should we just stick to essentials?"
I never wanted to push him past what he was comfortable with or think that I only appreciated him for his space. So, in order to avoid misunderstandings, I always tried to communicate with everyone the best that I could.
"I’ll have more than enough space," smiled Fan Teng Fei, kissing me on the head. The man never seemed to smile, so when he did, it was enough to knock me off balance. Really, it should be illegal to be that hot simply because of a smile.
The expression on my face must have shown what I was thinking because Fan Teng Fei only smirked again before opening the door.
It took me a second to get my wits about me to enter. It almost felt like a shopping date before the end of the world, and I loved every minute of it.
Maybe we could even find some stuff for the bunker and cabin back in City D. I had to remember to encourage the guys to find things that they liked to add to the house. If it was going to be something for all of us, it needed to have something from all of us.
Cheng Bo Jing stopped in front of the mall map and lowered his gun. "Do you want to go top to bottom or bottom to top?" he asked, looking at me over his shoulder.
"Let’s start at the top and work our way down," I shrugged, thinking that that would be the best option. "But we aren’t splitting up for a moment."
My skin was starting to crawl, and I had no idea why.
But no matter how you sliced it, it was never a good thing.
