Chapter 162: Main Character In A Horror Movie

To say that they were brown was an insult to his eyes...

His eyes looked like melted milk chocolate with golden flecks sparkling throughout. It made me want to get lost in them. And I couldn’t tell if that was a bad thing or not.

At least if my new buyer kept him around, it would give me someone to stare at when I wasn’t healing.

Speaking of the new buyer... "I’m sorry that I wasn’t in my cage. I couldn’t find it," I said in a low voice, tearing my eyes away from him. With Alpha, it was always better to admit wrong than to have him point it out to you. I would swear that the punishments were always worse when he had to tell you what you did wrong.

His gorgeous eyes widened at my words for a moment before he spun around, so suddenly I flinched.

Fuck sake. I knew it wasn’t a normal reaction... I need to be normal. I had to be normal.

The man grumbled under his breath as he gracefully rose to his feet and went toe-to-toe with Rip.

"You will explain to her everything. Every last damn thing before I lose my mind and put a hole through my wall.... Then, the paint colors won’t match, and I will need to redo this entire room. Do you understand me?" he growled, his thoughts all over the place.

Ah, OCD on top of hypochondria. That couldn’t be easy in the middle of an apocalypse. Not to mention, I had no idea where he would even find a can of paint. I couldn’t blame him... mismatched paint would drive me crazy, too, especially if it were only a few shades off.

"That’s what I was trying to do before you barged in here like you owned the place," smirked Rip as he folded his arms over his massive chest.

"I do own the place!" yelled the new man as he pushed Rip aside and stormed out the door.

Huh, I guess he was my new buyer.

Didn’t see that coming.

"I can see the wheels in your mind spinning, Little Bird," smiled Rip as he crouched down in front of me and wrapped his arms around my body, not caring in the slightest how awkward it was since I was in a ball.

Coming to his feet, I carried me back over to the hospital bed in the center of the room. But instead of putting me down on it, he sat down first, cringing as the metal protested his weight.

Once he was sure it wouldn’t break, he relaxed and settled me more comfortably on his body.

Without conscious thought, I could feel my body melting into his, and a contented sigh escaped my lips.

"So that’s my new buyer?" I asked softly, taking a strand of Rip’s hair and wrapping it around my finger. It was a new thing to happen, one that I started to do without really noticing it. Then again, Rip’s hair seemed to grow at an accelerated rate.

"What do you remember?" replied Rip, not addressing my question at all.

I paused for a moment and closed my eyes, and Rip’s scent encircled me. "I remember a new girl coming. Alpha kicked her and broke a rib. One of her babies was dying because of it, and I healed him..."

My voice trailed off as I tried to think about what happened after... but I really can’t seem to remember what happened after I drained my power to save the new girl.

"There were screams?" I continued, the words coming out as half statement, half question. There were always screams in the camp, especially at night when the fights started. Screams were ... but those weren’t.

However, every time I tried to force myself to think about that night, it was like there was a brick wall standing in front of me. Whenever I pushed forward, it was like banging my head off of it, resulting in nothing more than a headache.

And I was hurting enough right now.

Rip nodded his head as his fingers slowly trailed up and down my spine.

"Then do you want the long version or the bullet points?" he asked, his voice soothing me. Combined with his touch, I could feel my eyes getting heavy, and I was fighting the pull of sleep just to stay with him for a while longer.

"Don’t leave me," I said, clinging to him. I let out a snort as I realized that I hadn’t answered his question, but I needed to get that out before sleep won.

"I won’t," he assured me, his hand pausing for a moment before continuing.

"No, like, don’t leave the room," I insisted. I didn’t know what was behind door number one, but I wasn’t ready to open it and fight out. I needed Rip with me right now; I needed to recreate the feeling of safety that I had found in the cabin.

"I won’t," he assured me, dropping a kiss on my head. "But, back to the story before he comes back. Alpha is dead." He paused for a moment to let me soak that in, and I nodded my head to let him know I had heard him.

As to believing him? That would take some time.

"The woman’s name is Li Dai Lu. She and her husbands killed everyone in the camp other than the fighters and the women. Li Dai Lu thought that you would want them saved, so she made sure that everyone was released before we left. Because you had used up too much power, you passed out, and we decided to take you to City A so that Bin An Sha could look you over and make sure we didn’t miss anything."

His voice was blank as he gave me the Cole’s notes version of what I couldn’t remember, but I had a feeling that he was glossing over a lot of it.

Not that it mattered; I was still reeling from what he had told me.

Alpha was dead, we weren’t in the camp, and the women and fighters were still alive.

Have you ever felt like you were watching yourself in a horror movie? Like you were the main character, and you had no idea how you got there?

You are screaming at yourself to not go into the basement, or not to look over your shoulder, but your body does it anyways?

Yeah... that was how I felt right now. Like I was having an out-of-body experience, and my body wasn’t responding the way I needed it to.
