Chapter 145: Some Days I Still Missed Her
Rip paused and stared back into my eyes as soon as the words had left my mouth. "Then we prepare," he grunted. He walked over to where the two-piece bathroom was hidden next to the panty and opened the mirror cabinet. Taking out a small white box that I hadn’t thought about in forever, he brought me the contact lenses.
"I won’t take a chance of something happening to you, but if it does and I am not at your side, know that not even death will be able to take me from you," he said as I quickly put in the single brown contact over top of my left eye.
The fighters had loose lips when it came to things or people that they hated. And since I was public enemy number one, any time a person approached them to ask about me, they blabbed everything, including my different colored eyes.
Heterochromia was an easy identifier if anyone was looking for me. And, since it had gotten out that the healer at Camp Hell had two different colored eyes, having my contact in would give me an extra layer of protection.
I just can’t believe that Rip remembered.
Well, that’s a lie. One thing I had learned fast about him was that when it came to me, Rip remembered everything.
I quickly put in the contact without a mirror, having done this so many times in both of my lives that it was just something that I did... like brushing my teeth.
God, I missed brushing my teeth.
"Alpha wants me to be in the ring tonight with the new guy, so I won’t be able to be there beside you," grumbled Rip, and I watched him pace back and forth in front of me.
"Everything will be fine," I replied with a smile on my face as I wiped away the tear running down the side of my face. Putting a contact in with hands like mine was not something I recommended. There was so much dirt in my eye right now; I was scared I would have to do the entire process all over again.
"From your lips to God’s ear," he grunted, coming to a stop in front of me. "I would give you a knife, but if it is found..." His voice trailed off as he tried to get his thoughts sorted out.
I chuckled and shook my head. "I am not going to be punished for something so stupid as having a knife on me. Not when all I have to do is touch someone."
Rip nodded his head. "Kill whoever you need to. Don’t worry about anything, and just drain them dry. No one will notice the ashes in the women’s area, and I can take care of any fallout."
I smiled at him. He was freaking out about me going back to the women’s area than I was. It was adorable. Or at least as cute as a seven-foot mountain could be.
"Just get me there and keep your ears open, just in case," I joked.
Well, it was 20% a joke. I wasn’t looking forward to being there, but by this point, it was like taking off a Band-Aid. Either way, it was going to hurt, so you might as well do it fast and get it done sooner.
Rip opened his mouth like he wanted to say something but then decided against it. Nodding his head, he crouched down, picked up my cage, and carried me out of the cabin.
I could feel my eyes start to fill with tears, but I refused to let them fall. I would be the last person standing in this camp, no matter how many people hated me. I wouldn’t bow down to them.
Taking in a deep breath, I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep.
-----
The fighters were almost four days late, and Alpha was losing his mind.
Unfortunately, that meant that Rip was fighting in the ring every night just to make things more interesting. The good part was that with Rip fighting, I didn’t have to worry about healing everyone.
So, it was a catch-22.
But what I had to laugh at the most was that after the big shot, the one that I saved left, Alpha had been walking around with his hair done and wearing a three-piece suit that clearly had to have been made for him. He was even wearing glasses without any lenses in them just because he thought they completed the look or something.
He was acting more like a mob boss in a B-grade movie, thinking that he was top shit. I didn’t know who put the bug in his ear that changed him almost overnight, but he stopped harassing the women all the time.
Sure, he let his underlings take over, but the underlings didn’t have a key to the cage, so it wasn’t that big of an issue. They were nothing but hot air, and their egos popped just as quickly.
"How can you stand to be so hated?" asked one girl to the left of me. My back was to her, and I wasn’t going to put forth the effort to turn around and look at her. There was no point. She would be gone just as fast as the other ones.
That reminded me, I should ask military dude his name next time I see him.
I didn’t bother answering her, her words meaning less than nothing to me.
Huh, look at me growing a thicker skin. Before, knowing someone didn’t like me or appreciate me would have sent me into a downward spiral, now it just made me laugh.
The best lesson I had learned in this camp was that no one’s opinion about me mattered.
They would jump at the chance to stab me in the back, both literally and figuratively, the second they could, so why would I make friends with them or care what they said?
"Did you not hear me?" she hissed. Her name in my head was simply ’Unknown Female #192’. She had come in with another girl and two fighters a couple of weeks ago but hadn’t had a true taste of the camp yet.
Nope, she had just heard what the others in the camp were saying about me and decided to join the ’cool kids’.
But my talents weren’t normally wasted on the girls, not unless they brought in a lot of money and those who did, died last summer.
Which meant that I really had no reason to interact with her.
"This is one of those times I would suggest that you simply kill yourself so you don’t take up more air, but by the looks of you, you aren’t that far off."
I let out a quiet yawn, staring at the empty cage beside me. I still remember how nice Ming Zhu was before this place really got to her.
The stupidest part was that some days, I missed her.
