Chapter 74: Puppet master .
Heavy chunks of silence and admission fell on their shoulders as they pondered on everything they had reasoned, reasoning for next steps to take.
After a while, Tristan spoke up. "Then we’d have to cut another thread loose." He said. His eyes darkening as well. "But we’d have to do it without them knowing. They are trying to play us, trying to twist us as puppets. While we let them think they are doing that, we have to work in the blind spots, investigating and digging deep into their priced walls and veils." He reasoned.
"That shouldn’t be hard." Troy said, lighting up a bit. "They think having all these other companies under them makes them strong, but on the contrary, it actually makes them really weak." He said.
"How do you mean?" Theo asked, eyebrows furrowed.
"Okay, what I mean is this. These companies under them, or these companies that have proven their ’loyalty’ did so under duress. They were practically forced to, because they didn’t want to loose everything, and like every fucked up person or people, this network holding them on chokehold will not be loyal to them, and would always remind them how much of a liability they could be at any time, leaving them walking on eggshells every damn time." Troy explained.
"Bottom line is, it will be easier to crack these companies that have been forced to walk on eggshells. If we can get them to turn against this network, showing them these things we have, and the more we can get if we are able to cross those bobby traps; maybe we can get them to turn on these guys in the future." He said at once, exhaling.
"But this is a long, one off shot. And it has to work, because we have neither the time nor resources to build a shield against them." Theo added, abit relieved that they were finally clocking in on something.
"This will be our trump card so we have to tread carefully. They are showing us their strengths because they want to see how we are going to react to them, and their move was premeditated because they had to start messing with us when Drew fucked up. So it might be linked, but we’d just mind our businesses, while we work in the shadows." Tristan admonished, the weight of their choices, making itself clearer and clearer in his head.
"What do we do about Drew and Severo’s gang?" Theo asked.
"We treat them as normal. Handle them the way we would have initially. As for Drew, kill him on sight. If he’s working with the network, he’d reappear one day because they’d see him as a liability now that his work is done, so he’d be forced to run, because they’d be waiting for him in the shadows." Tristan admonished.
"As for the gang, go to their official servers and ground them to dust, while you track their actual whereabouts and take them all out, leaving none to testify. It’s high time we show these people just how ruthless we can be. We’ve dragged this out for too long." He said, the weight of his words echoing in the silence around them.
"Wouldn’t the network be concerned if we take out the gang?" Troy asked.
"No. They wouldn’t. The gang became a liability the moment we found out it was them." Theo responded, his eyes shut, as he swiveled slowly in his seat.
"So they literally sent them to their deaths, because they knew we’d find them." Troy said, nodding in understanding.
"Exactly. So count this as carrying out our first tasks as puppets." Tristan said coldly, the weight of his aura undeniable.
The playing the puppet master game had just begun.
_________
Theo sighed as the line went dead, heavy silence surrounding him, leaving him to his individual thoughts.
He thought back to the Grey Corp server he had tried to go into, remembering how close he was to stepping on a bobby trap.
A major one.
He tried to imagine the day he’d actually have to walk into that marshy land. That would be the day they’d declare war on the network.
He had always been one to relish such moments, and this was one of them. The moment wasn’t here yet, but the imagination tasted so sweet in his mouth, sweet and tantalizing. Made his feral side want more, his fingers itching to dig in more, but he stopped himself by opening his eyes, taking a deep breath.
He will wait, he had to. Besides good things come to those who wait.
His alarm blared by his side indicating it was five o’clock already, causing him to shake his head, chuckling.
He hadn’t even realized the time change. The whole network thing had really taken up every space in his mind.
They had to get to they bottom of everything, even if it was the last thing they did.
Sighing, he looked over the papers scattered before him, considering going over them again, but quickly ended the thought when his wolf reminded him that they had promised to be beside their mate when she woke up.
Sighing, he arranged the documents, putting them in a file, before saving his work and turning off his screens.
Getting up from his seat, he stretched, picking up his phone before walking out of the office. Giving the black file on his desk one more glance, he shut his office door, a soft click indicating it had locked echoed behind him as he walked down to his room.
On getting to the door, he took a deep breath with his eyes closed in an attempt to clear his head, trying to wade off all the tension and concerns in his mind.
After a minute of taking deep breaths, he walked into the room, opening the door with a soft click, before shutting it behind him, softly as well.
His heart calmed completely when he saw her sleeping peacefully, on his side of the bed, snuggling into his favorite pillow.
Yes, it was cliche, but he’s always had one since he was little. One pillow always feels different from the others.
He took small steps to the side of the bed, sitting on it, his hand reaching to stroke her hair, but decided against it.
He stood up and headed to the shower, wanting to wash of the day’s sweat, that was now mixed with the salty smell of the beach.
He finished quickly, putting on a pair of grey shirts and nothing else, slipping into the other side of the bed, quietly.
When he succeeded, he carefully pulled her towards him, and she didn’t resist him at all. She went easily, curling into his chest, releasing a small moan.
A soft smile tugged on his lips, as he kissed her forehead, shutting his eyes.
Out of all of his brothers, he was the only one who was able to sleep properly that night.
Well, couldn’t blame him, he had a certainly someone snuggled in his solid chest.
How could he not.
