Chapter 60: Chapter 60: What Shows Can’t I Watch
north, "Respected Miss Chen, your guide, Cheng, is now online. Please entrust your precious time to me tomorrow, and I will wholeheartedly serve you."
Chen Ningxi couldn’t help but laugh.
Chen Ningxi, "Very much looking forward to Cheng’s service. See you tomorrow."
north, "See you tomorrow."
When Liang Lei came out of the bar, she started discussing the next day’s plan with Chen Ningxi. According to the itinerary, they were to visit a nearby folklore village to experience the customs of ethnic minorities. But with Cheng Qiaobei around, Liang Lei wanted to go paragliding, so she asked Chen Ningxi if they could spend the day separately.
Of course, Chen Ningxi also wanted more time to spend with Cheng Qiaobei, so she readily agreed.
...
As the sky glimmered faintly with the first light of dawn, rustling sounds came from Liang Lei’s room.
Chen Ningxi, being a light sleeper, drew the curtains and stepped out of her room, only to see Liang Lei with a backpack heading for the door.
Liang Lei whispered apologetically, "Did I wake you?"
Chen Ningxi said, "No, I was just going to the bathroom."
"Okay, I’ll be on my way then. You should get some more sleep." Liang Lei turned off the living room lamp and jogged out the door.
Chen Ningxi walked to the balcony, gazing at the distant coastline. The morning sea was tranquil, with waves that seemed not to have fully awakened, blurring the line between sea and sky.
With time still early, she decided to head to the beach to watch the sunrise.
Fully dressed and taking her DSLR, she went out.
In the early morning, quite a few people gathered to watch the sunrise, each finding their spot for the perfect photo. Chen Ningxi found a rock to sit on, quietly listening to the waves and waiting for the sun to rise.
By the time Cheng Qiaobei woke up, Chen Ningxi had already posted a picture of the sunrise on her WeChat moments.
The caption read, "Staring at the sea too long makes you want to see people. Seeing too many people makes you want to see the sea." — Haruki Murakami.
Cheng Qiaobei rubbed his eyes, sat up, yawning, and replied, "I’m on my way."
When Chen Ningxi received his reply, she was having breakfast in the restaurant. Seeing his message, she opened their WeChat chat, "You’re up? I’m in the restaurant."
Cheng Qiaobei came to the restaurant to find Chen Ningxi. His sudden appearance caused the waitstaff to look at each other knowingly; someone even notified the kitchen to be alert since CEO Cheng was inspecting the breakfast service.
Cheng Qiaobei sat across from Chen Ningxi with a cup of coffee. As she looked up, she said, "You move fast."
Unlike his usual professional attire, he was dressed casually today.
Chen Ningxi smiled, "Are you in your role as CEO Cheng or guide Cheng now?"
Cheng Qiaobei leaned lazily against the chair back, setting down his coffee, and said playfully, "Right now, I’m sitting here as your boyfriend. Once we leave this hotel, I’ll be guide Cheng."
Chen Ningxi glanced at his cup, "Just coffee for breakfast?"
Cheng Qiaobei took a sip, "For a little boost."
"Didn’t sleep well last night?" Chen Ningxi asked.
Cheng Qiaobei mentioned, "Got a call at dawn from a guest needing help. Her daughter’s cochlear implant was lost in the hotel somewhere. We searched floor by floor and finally found it next to the hotel fountain. It was almost four a.m. by the time I got back."
"Truly hard work," Chen Ningxi sympathized. "But it was worth it. I heard cochlear implants aren’t cheap, costing over a hundred thousand yuan."
"Yeah, the little girl’s mom said it all added up to nearly three hundred thousand. It’s a substantial amount for a family, so we absolutely had to find it," Cheng Qiaobei said, rubbing his tired temples. Chen Ningxi noticed the redness in his eyes. "You shouldn’t come with me today. I’ll just wander on my own. Get some rest."
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "I’m used to it. Being in the service industry, this is common."
Chen Ningxi said, "I won’t get lost on my own. Go back and rest."
Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow and teased, "Are you trying to get rid of me? Got something I’m not supposed to see?"
He didn’t mean it, just didn’t want Chen Ningxi to worry too much.
"No, nothing you can’t see. Alright, if you don’t mind the exhaustion, come along," Chen Ningxi wiped her mouth and said, "Let’s go."
They left the restaurant together. No sooner had they departed than the restaurant staff began speculating about their relationship.
Everyone knew Cheng Qiaobei was a workaholic and never brought women along during inspections. Some guessed she was his girlfriend, some a client, and others that maybe it was a pretty female guest whom Manager Cheng flirted with.
Chen Ningxi asked, "How far is the folklore village?"
Cheng Qiaobei started the car, "A forty-minute drive."
Chen Ningxi nodded understandingly, "Is there anything fun or delicious? I also want to bring back some souvenirs for my colleagues. Any recommendations?"
Cheng Qiaobei chuckled, "Have you ever heard, never buy souvenirs when traveling, especially from folklore villages? Most are overpriced, and you could just buy them from the cheap goods market."
Chen Ningxi said, "I’m not buying anything too expensive, just some small trinkets for colleagues to have a keepsake."
Cheng Qiaobei, "Alright, remember this: under a hundred yuan brings joy, over a hundred buys a lesson. There are many artisans in the village. They say it’s silverware, but truth and lies mix, easily fooling outsiders or the unaware. For female colleagues, you can get rings or bracelets, for male colleagues, pendants or charms, usually about ten or twenty yuan each. Don’t buy beyond that.
Truth be told, when I surveyed Chu’an back then, the folklore villages were still inhabited by locals. The culture was pure. Later, as tourism boomed, many locals moved away, renting their houses to outsiders running businesses. Chu’an’s folklore village eventually became commercialized, losing much of its original appearance."
Chen Ningxi asked, "Do you know where to find genuine silver jewelry?"
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "I know one, but I haven’t been here in half a year. Not sure if it’s still there."
Chen Ningxi suggested, "Let’s go check it out."
Closer to the sea, there were coconut groves along the road. Chen Ningxi asked, "Can we pick these coconuts as we please?"
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "Those are all contracted areas. You can’t pick them freely. Besides, even if you could, we couldn’t climb up there. They have professional equipment for that."
"Could you climb up with the proper tools?"
"Heh...you’re overestimating me," Cheng Qiaobei chuckled awkwardly.
Though he didn’t want to admit it, coconut tree climbing was indeed beyond him.
Chen Ningxi deliberately teased, "There are things you can’t do after all."
Hearing her teasing tone, Cheng Qiaobei glanced at her and laughed, "Seems I hold quite a high place in your regard."
Chen Ningxi, "A minute ago, I thought so. But, if you can’t even climb a coconut tree, I used to climb trees as a kid."
Cheng Qiaobei chuckled in exasperation, "Northern trees aren’t the same as southern coconut trees. Northern trees have plenty of branches. Look at this coconut tree; there’s hardly anywhere to stand. Even with tools, it’s a struggle."
Chen Ningxi pursed her lips, "Got it, got it, you can’t do it."
"Hmph...who are you saying can’t do it?" Cheng Qiaobei reached over, hooked Chen Ningxi by the neck, and pulled her into his arms. Her neck was ticklish, causing her to giggle.
Suddenly, he gently kissed her on the top of her head. Chen Ningxi felt it, her laughter fading as her ears grew redder.
