Chapter 425: Chapter 425: The Baby Who Shares Heartbeats
Early in the morning, Cheng Ningxi got a call from Liang Lei saying she was already in the hospital waiting to give birth. Chen Ningxi left the half-washed clothes behind and hurriedly rushed to the hospital.
Following the room number she mentioned, Chen Ningxi was just about to knock on the door when she heard Liang Lei’s painful moaning from inside:
"Ah...mmm..."
Lin Hanrui said, "Leizi, do you want some water?"
"Ouch, it hurts so much, I don’t want water." Liang Lei pushed away the cup that was brought to her lips.
Lin Hanrui said, "Then how do you not feel pain?"
Liang Lei glanced at him while groaning and grabbed Lin Hanrui’s hand, "Hoo...hoo...when I’m giving birth and the doctor asks whether to save me or the baby, you must save me, do you hear? If you don’t save me, I’ll haunt you as a ghost."
"Oh come on, don’t say such ominous things." Lin Hanrui squatted at her feet. Liang Lei was in so much pain that she couldn’t walk and sat on the bedside to rest for a while.
Everyone in the room comforted her, telling her not to think too much.
Chen Ningxi gently knocked twice on the door and walked in. Liang Lei turned her head, saw Chen Ningxi, and reached out her hand, "Oh, Ning Xi... it hurts so much..."
Chen Ningxi greeted a few elders, came in front of Liang Lei, held her hand, and asked softly:
"Are you tired? Haven’t eaten anything, right?"
Lin Hanrui said, "She said she couldn’t eat, hasn’t eaten a bite since morning, and won’t listen to anyone."
Chen Ningxi didn’t scold her and continued to coax her, "You have to eat a little, otherwise you won’t have the strength to give birth later. Lin Hanrui, where’s the food?"
"Here it is." Liang Lei’s mother, Wan Yixuan, quickly opened the insulated lunchbox on the table, "Ning Xi, make her eat more; she only listens to you."
Chen Ningxi managed to coax Liang Lei into eating half a bowl of sea cucumber porridge.
Liang Lei said, "Ning Xi, I really can’t eat anymore."
Chen Ningxi put down the bowl, "Have some water."
Liang Lei nodded, and Lin Hanrui quickly brought the cup to her lips. She just started to suck on the straw when the pain shot up from her thighs to her lower back again.
"Uh...mmm..." Liang Lei’s expression was pained, and she braced herself against the bed, not daring to move.
Watching Liang Lei endure the labor pains, Chen Ningxi felt a bit afraid herself.
She didn’t know how to alleviate her pain and could only gently rub her lower back with her hand.
Chen Ningxi was very worried and asked Lin Hanrui, "Did the doctor say when she will give birth?"
Lin Hanrui said, "They did a check, said she’s only two centimeters dilated, and told her to walk around more."
Upon hearing that she still had to move, Chen Ningxi, feeling distressed, asked, "Can she still walk?"
Liang Lei bit her lip and shook her head.
The elders in the room all advised her to keep going, while Lin Hanrui stood by, also worried and at a loss.
The doctor said to walk, but Liang Lei couldn’t. What was he to do?
Chen Ningxi said, "It’s okay, take another break, alright?"
Liang Lei nodded.
After sitting for another half hour, a midwife came in and asked, "Why are you still sitting? The doctor said you need to walk, otherwise, the cervix won’t dilate, and how will you give birth?"
Hearing this, everyone in the room began urging Liang Lei to get up and walk.
Chen Ningxi also had to listen to the nurse, as they were the professionals, so she asked Liang Lei, "Can you walk?"
Liang Lei said, "I can’t walk."
The nurse said, "Sitting like this, your cervix will dilate slowly, and the slower it is, the longer you’ll be in pain."
Liang Lei gritted her teeth and started to walk with Chen Ningxi and Lin Hanrui’s assistance.
As she walked, she whimpered, her hands holding onto Chen Ningxi’s completely soaked, the pain evident in how much pain the contractions were causing.
Every few steps, she needed to stop and rest, and Chen Ningxi let Liang Lei lean on her to recuperate.
Lin Hanrui’s eyes were full of anxiety, but he could only worry helplessly, unable to ease her pain.
"Leizi," Lin Hanrui reached for her, "come, lean on me, Ning Xi is out of strength, I’ll hold you."
Liang Lei leaned her head back, resting it against Lin Hanrui’s chest, "Oh...mm...mm..."
After a while, a check revealed she was only three centimeters dilated.
Liang Lei had been experiencing contractions since the early morning and only entered the delivery room shortly after three in the afternoon.
With just a door separating them, Chen Ningxi waited outside, feeling extremely tense.
Having never seen the pre-labor process in person, she wasn’t afraid of childbirth, but seeing Liang Lei in such agony, she became terrified of her own future labor.
When Cheng Qiaobei arrived at the hospital, Liang Lei had already given birth to a baby girl weighing five pounds and eight ounces.
There was a saying that the first person to hold the baby would pass on their traits, so Liang Lei asked the nurse to give the baby to Chen Ningxi to hold.
The nurse called for a family member, and Lin Hanrui excitedly went to take the baby, but the nurse said, "The mother wants Chen Ningxi to hold the baby."
Wan Yixuan said, "Alright, let Ning Xi be the first to hold her. Considering her family background, looks, and intelligence, having her hold the baby is just right. This child is bound to be beautiful, smart, and blessed."
Lin Hanrui withdrew his outstretched hand, "Yes, Ning Xi, hurry, come on."
Even Lin Hanrui’s parents encouraged her to take the baby, but Chen Ningxi knew she wasn’t perfect.
She’s not superstitious, but at this moment, she only wished the gods would bless this child.
Chen Ningxi gently pushed Lin Hanrui forward and politely declined, "I’m not good at holding babies, you’re the family, let Lin Hanrui hold her."
"Stop pushing, are you abandoning the baby? Someone come quick." the nurse urged.
Chen Ningxi said, "Lin Hanrui graduated from a prestigious university in architecture, he’s handsome, and he has the talent and good looks, as the father, he’s the most suitable to hold her."
Lin Hanrui couldn’t hold back any longer, "Then I’ll hold her."
He carefully took the baby into his arms, looked down at her face, so pink and tender that his heart felt warm and soft.
Chen Ningxi leaned in to take a look; the baby was so beautiful. In that moment, her expectations for new life became her armor, making her no longer fear the pain of childbirth.
She couldn’t help but wonder when her own baby, with whom she would share a heartbeat, would come to her.
Lin Hanrui moved the baby towards Chen Ningxi, "Here, hold her."
Chen Ningxi took the baby, gently nuzzling her face against the swaddle. She was so small, so soft.
Her nose tingled, and she held back the warmth in her eyes as she handed the baby to Lin Hanrui, saying, "...I’ll go call Qiaobei."
Lin Hanrui said, "No need, I left a message for him with the room number."
Chen Ningxi stepped out of the crowd and walked briskly towards the end of the corridor.
Lin Hanrui handed the baby to Wan Yixuan, "Mom, take the baby, I’ll wait for Liang Lei."
Wan Yixuan took the baby, smiling so deeply that her crow’s feet became more pronounced, "Oh my, my little treasure, you’re truly beautiful."
Lin Hanrui didn’t feel comfortable leaving his parents with the baby, so he asked Wan Yixuan to take the baby to the room to wait.
Just then, Cheng Qiaobei came out of the elevator and headed to the room, only to see the elders with the baby there, learning that Lin Hanrui and Chen Ningxi were still waiting outside the delivery room for Liang Lei.
He headed towards the delivery room, and, glancing casually, saw a solitary figure standing at the corridor’s end by the window.
The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow from outside, enveloping her.
Though she stood in the light, her shoulders were visibly trembling.
Cheng Qiaobei walked quickly towards her, holding her tightly from behind, planting a reassuring kiss on the top of her head, and gently said:
"I’m here."
