Chapter 338: Chapter 338 I’m Not Worthy of You
Chen Ningxi was heading to work, and Cheng Qiaobei followed her downstairs with a trash bag in hand.
"I’ll take it down myself," she pointed at the trash bag.
Cheng Qiaobei fished out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. "I’m stepping out for a smoke."
She didn’t like the smell of cigarettes lingering indoors, so Cheng Qiaobei would smoke on the balcony with the windows open. But it was winter, and keeping the windows open too long might make her catch a cold.
Chen Ningxi said, "If you can quit, you should. Besides, if we start preparing for pregnancy, you’ll have to quit anyway."
Cheng Qiaobei, pondering something, replied, "Not for now. Once things get busy, I’ll still need it to stay alert."
Aside from routine errands to buy household goods, he hardly left the house and had no social engagements. Yet he was never idle. Every day, when she returned home, thick stacks of printed documents would be on the table, separated by different colored binder clips. His work ethic hadn’t wavered even after leaving his job.
The elevator doors opened, and he took her hand to lead her outside.
The trash disposal point was near Building Nine, so Cheng Qiaobei could walk with her a little further.
Once outside, he lit a cigarette, the thin smoke quickly scattered by the chilly wind.
Cheng Qiaobei said, "I had Wei Lai rent an office space. The renovations are done, and we can start working there in a couple of days. Let me know when you’re free, and I’ll take you to check it out."
He was always a man of action, which didn’t surprise Chen Ningxi.
"I’m off this weekend," she replied, then asked, "Is there anything else you still need?"
Cheng Qiaobei gave her a mischievous grin. "Yes, we’re still missing a gorgeous beauty... to man the front desk."
Chen Ningxi glared at him. "Beauty, huh? Is she for you or for the clients?"
Cheng Qiaobei took a drag from his cigarette, chuckling so hard his shoulders shook. "First, she’s for me to chat with. After the chat, she’ll entertain the clients. We can’t waste our money for nothing."
The more he spoke, the less sense he made. Chen Ningxi glanced around for something nearby, and seeing how things were turning against him, Cheng Qiaobei bolted with the trash bag.
Sharp-eyed, Chen Ningxi picked up a tree branch from under the landscape trees and chased after him. "Stop right there!"
Early in the morning, the two of them were running and chasing around the complex.
When Cheng Qiaobei finally reached the trash disposal point, he glanced back and saw Chen Ningxi heading over to the parking lot.
Standing about thirty to forty meters apart, Cheng Qiaobei cupped a hand around his mouth and shouted, "Bye, wifey!"
Chen Ningxi raised the tree branch and waved it at him, warning him not to act smug.
Cheng Qiaobei shamelessly shouted back, "The wind’s too strong, I can’t hear you!"
Agh... so infuriating!
Realizing she was almost late for work, Chen Ningxi gave up and stormed off with the branch.
Watching her annoyed expression was oddly amusing. Occasionally teasing her had become one of Cheng Qiaobei’s little pleasures in life. With a cigarette dangling from his lips, he sauntered back slowly.
Just then, Chen Ningxi’s car emerged from the parking lot. Cheng Qiaobei stood on the roadside, cigarette still in his mouth, hands behind his back, and flashed her a roguish grin as he watched her leave for work.
As her car approached him, the driver’s side window rolled down. Before he could react, a chunk of snow flew straight into his collar.
What a shock—completely unexpected.
"Damn..." he muttered, and the cigarette dropped to the ground.
Then the snow started melting once it touched the warmth inside his clothes. Cheng Qiaobei quickly grabbed his shirt and shook it, trying to remove the snow, but it had already begun melting against his body heat.
"You’re good," Cheng Qiaobei proclaimed to the person in the car. "Tonight, we’ll settle this once and for all."
Chen Ningxi raised the tree branch. "Who’s afraid of you?"
Though her words were defiant, she stomped on the gas pedal and sped away, leaving no trace behind.
If there’s ever a phrase to describe someone talking tough while acting cowardly, it’s likely referring to this very moment with Chen Ningxi.
Cheng Qiaobei chuckled, stomped out the fallen cigarette, bent down to pick it up, and tossed it in the trash bin before heading upstairs.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, he had to keep a low profile before the new company officially launched.
Wei Lai sent over several photos of the new office space. The interiors were almost completely furnished. Though it couldn’t compare to Jade Jiali’s luxurious setup, it was a small but fully functional space.
Wei Lai: Boss, when are we opening?
Cheng Qiaobei replied: Check the almanac and pick an auspicious date.
Wei Lai: You want me to pick?
Cheng Qiaobei: Too hard for you?
Entrusting something this important to her?
Being unconditionally trusted like this felt akin to having the kind of trust one places in a battle buddy who has your back in the trenches.
Wei Lai: No problem.
Last night, Deng Yan had sent Cheng Qiaobei a few draft contracts. After revising them, he planned to finalize the partnerships today.
Cheng Qiaobei: Contact the office supplies vendor and have all the supplies delivered to the office today. Over the next couple of days, staff will gradually start onboarding.
Wei Lai: Got it.
Cheng Qiaobei pulled out his chair and sat down, powering on his laptop. A design company had sent him an experience link, which led to the official website for Eastern First-class. The platform allowed users to book rooms and perform other related operations.
After trying out the site, he provided feedback and requested further modifications.
For this venture, Cheng Qiaobei had prepared meticulously, even adopting a "burn the boats" mentality for success.
Meanwhile, at Danjiang Electric.
Chen Ningxi was seated in her office reviewing approval documents when a knock came at the door. Without raising her head, she responded.
"Come in."
Lu Xingyan stepped inside. "Manager Chen."
Chen Ningxi glanced up. "What is it?"
Lu Xingyan placed a reimbursement form on the desk. "This is Master Wu’s meal and travel expenses. It needs your signature."
Chen Ningxi took the form, gave it a quick glance, flipped to the back, signed swiftly, and handed it back to him.
Lu Xingyan kept staring at her. When their eyes met, he felt his heart skip a beat.
He stood there hesitantly, prompting Chen Ningxi to ask, "Is there something else?"
Lu Xingyan shook his head and gave a sheepish smile. "No, that’s all."
Unperturbed, Chen Ningxi returned her attention to the documents on her desk.
As Lu Xingyan walked to the door, he turned back for one last look. Just as he was about to leave, he noticed Wang Qing at the end of the hallway. She was standing there, staring straight at him.
At last night’s dinner party, Wang Qing had asked Lu Xingyan, emboldened by alcohol, about his type of girl. Lu Xingyan, also tipsy, let his guard down and described a type that matched Chen Ningxi to a tee.
While others didn’t give it much thought, Wang Qing clearly read between the lines.
On the ride home, the two of them sat awkwardly—her in the front passenger seat, him in the back—and when the driver dropped them off, Wang Qing had been adamant about not letting Lu Xingyan leave.
Lu Xingyan had no interest in girls who got excessively emotional after drinking, nor in drunken confessions of love. When Wang Qing half-jokingly suggested they start dating, he had refused her outright.
Judging by her demeanor today, it seemed she was here to settle accounts.
Lu Xingyan hurried downstairs, but Wang Qing chased after him. She cornered him at the hallway’s turn.
"Why are you running?" Wang Qing demanded.
Lu Xingyan frowned and glanced upstairs. "Who’s running? I’ve got something to do."
Wang Qing said, "I wasn’t drunk last night."
Lu Xingyan scratched his head. "What do you want?"
Wang Qing said, "Let’s be together."
Lu Xingyan let out a frustrated sigh. "Didn’t we go over this last night? It’s not happening."
Wang Qing pressed, "What’s so impossible about it?"
Hearing footsteps echoing from downstairs, Lu Xingyan didn’t want coworkers to misunderstand the situation. "It just isn’t. What more is there to say?"
As he began to leave, Wang Qing spread her arms to block his path. "You owe me an explanation. What don’t you like about me?"
Though irritated, Lu Xingyan knew she was a girl, and he didn’t want to hurt her pride by being blunt. So he replied:
"I don’t think I’m good enough for you."
Wang Qing rebutted, "I don’t see it that way."
With coworkers about to walk in on them, Lu Xingyan pushed past her to leave. Wang Qing grabbed his arm. "If you don’t agree, I’ll tell everyone about you and Manager Chen."
