Chapter 327: Chapter 327: Reclaiming Them All Together
"Where’s Tingting?" Cheng Qiaobei asked the previous receptionist.
"She went back to her hometown to get married." Lin Hanrui appeared with a thermos cup, floating with wolfberries. Cheng Qiaobei glanced at him with a touch of disdain in his eyes, "Starting your health regimen already?"
"You don’t understand." Lin Hanrui wore an utterly convinced look, "This is called early prevention. Don’t scoff, you should start too."
Cheng Qiaobei snorted lightly, "I’m perfectly healthy, no need."
"Stubborn, aren’t you?" Lin Hanrui took a sip of water, firm in his wellness principles, then asked, "What brings you here?"
Cheng Qiaobei leaned back on the sofa, his arms draped over its top, "I’ve already submitted my resignation to the company."
Lin Hanrui knew he was planning to quit but hadn’t expected it to be so soon.
"You’re leaving? What’s your dad’s stance on this?"
The water in the thermos cup was still scalding, so Lin Hanrui angled the cup and gave it a gentle blow.
"Him?" Cheng Qiaobei lit a cigarette, tilting his head back slightly, the sensuous curve of his lips exhaling a thin wisp of smoke, "He’s probably been hoping for me to leave for a long time."
Lin Hanrui widened his eyes in disbelief, "You’re leaving, and he didn’t try to stop you? Your dad really is different from the rest. If it were mine, knowing I’m so accomplished, he’d have handed me the company ages ago."
Cheng Qiaobei had long become indifferent to such conversations, just as Chen Ningxi’s father had once said—don’t waste time and energy on those who hurt you.
To be able to disregard it now is something he needs to thank that advice for.
"How’s the matter I asked you to handle?" Cheng Qiaobei enquired.
"All sorted—resources, manpower, whenever needed, it’s ready." Lin Hanrui noticed his detached expression. "Your biological father treats you this way, and you don’t care at all?"
Cheng Qiaobei shook his head, responding with a careless smile.
"Sigh..." Lin Hanrui couldn’t decide how he felt. Should he admire Cheng’s inner strength or pity him for being abandoned by his father? For now, at least, he could only comfort and support him, though he still uttered a few resentful words, "You wait till you succeed in the future. I’ll see if he regrets this—what kind of dad doesn’t love his son? Seriously amazing. Don’t you worry, even if the entire world leaves or betrays you, I never will."
Such a sentimental spiel—Lin Hanrui was waiting for an emotional response from Cheng Qiaobei. Instead, what he got was, "Why don’t you wish me better things instead of everyone leaving and betraying me? Should I do a dance and thank you for your kindness?"
"Pfft..." Lin Hanrui accidentally sprayed out his wolfberry water, scrambling for tissues to wipe his mouth. "I was being sincere—" His voice abruptly cut off when Cheng Qiaobei pointed at him and warned, "Dare to say the last word out loud, and I’ll tell Liang Lei about the gifts you sent to that streamer."
"Shit," Lin Hanrui almost dropped to his knees, "Bro, that was forever ago, back in ancient times."
Cheng Qiaobei knew exactly what to hold over him, "Ancient times or not, you were still the top ranking Don on her page."
Lin Hanrui’s eyes bulged, "Please don’t tell her. If you do, I’m taking off my fingers and gouging out my eyes to use as marbles."
Cheng Qiaobei was only joking, but now it seemed that the woman who could bring such a player to his knees was truly extraordinary.
Indeed, as people say, every force meets its counterforce.
After discussing the Eastern First-class project with Lin Hanrui, Cheng Qiaobei finally left.
By that time, the electricity department had reached its closing hour. Chen Ningxi carefully packed multiple project folders into the rear file cabinet. Her back was turned to the door, unaware of Cheng Siluo standing outside.
Knock, knock, knock—three knocks at the door. She turned around, her face instantly losing all warmth.
To be honest, ever since their wedding day, her encounters with Cheng Siluo had been so few she could count them on one hand.
"Sister-in-law." Cheng Siluo casually stepped inside as if they were old friends, "Lucky you’re still here, otherwise my trip would’ve been for nothing."
Chen Ningxi deduced that she must have come regarding Sun Dongchen’s issue but couldn’t very well kick her out. She walked to the water dispenser to pour a cup of water, "Sit down for a while, Sister Siluo."
"No need, I’m not thirsty." Cheng Siluo seated herself on the sofa, her eyes scanning the office space. "The decor here is typically government-office style."
Chen Ningxi placed the paper cup near her hand, "Be careful—it’s a bit hot."
"Thanks." Cheng Siluo was not one to beat around the bush. Her visit might have been sudden, but it was undeniably rooted in the reality that there was no better mediator than her.
She seemed eager to express something yet appeared burdened by unspeakable concerns. Chen Ningxi had no intention of allowing her to steer the conversation toward Sun Dongchen.
"How’s the baby? Easy to care for?" Chen Ningxi started a topic.
When the baby came up, Cheng Siluo naturally let her guard down. "The baby’s great—not fussy at all. Eats, sleeps, wakes up and plays, just like that. The nanny is really experienced; when you have kids in the future, you should hire her too."
Chen Ningxi replied, "Sure, introduce her to me when the time comes. By the way, when’s the banquet?"
Cheng Siluo said, "Still waiting for the right date from the fortune teller. Once it’s set, I’ll let you and Qiaobei know."
Chen Ningxi agreed readily and continued to chat for the next half-hour about children and other topics, cleverly avoiding the matter she knew was coming.
Seeing that Chen Ningxi had shifted to discussing beauty routines, Cheng Siluo finally couldn’t hold back anymore. She lowered her posture and pleaded gently:
"Sister-in-law, I’ve come today to ask for your help with something."
Chen Ningxi’s expression remained composed, unaffected by her emotional plea. "Sister Siluo, there’s no need for that; we’re family. Family matters are never about asking for help—it’s just done."
The implied meaning was clear—external matters would be another discussion altogether.
If Cheng Siluo could understand the underlying tone in Chen Ningxi’s words, she might have realized her request was impossible.
But Cheng Siluo had no other options, so she had to try, setting aside her pride to beg on behalf of Sun Dongchen for one last chance.
"Sister-in-law," Cheng Siluo grabbed Chen Ningxi’s hand, "I know you have a kind heart—you’re a good person. I wouldn’t have come to you if I wasn’t out of options. My husband has always been careless, lacking foresight. He didn’t think things through and caused this massive misunderstanding with Mayor Chen. There weren’t any bad intentions.
You know, we’re family—we wouldn’t harm our own. Just for Qiaobei’s sake, can you intercede with your father? What he says carries far more weight than anything we could say a hundred times.
I can handle the favors needed during this process—I’ll take responsibility.
I even prepared a token of my sincerity as compensation to your father.
Ningxi, please help us. Beg your father to spare my husband, okay?"
Chen Ningxi’s expression remained calm, her gaze frosty yet profound. She stared silently at Cheng Siluo, watching as she pulled out a bank card from her purse. This card was nothing short of a second insult to her father. The fury brewing deep within her felt like a volcanic eruption, yet she forced herself to suppress it.
Perhaps Cheng Siluo thought guilt would prohibit her refusal.
Unfortunately, she was mistaken.
What followed would leave her utterly humiliated.
The collective humiliation directed at her father and Qiaobei—Chen Ningxi intended to reclaim it all.
