Chapter 322: Chapter 322: The Best Opportunity

Cheng Qiaobei left the company early to comfort Ye Yujun. As soon as he knocked on the door and entered, he saw that Ye Yujun’s face was still clouded with worry.

He poured a glass of water, handed it to Ye Yujun, and said, "Mom, I’ve submitted all the evidence. Don’t worry; Dad will be home soon."

Ye Yujun held the glass with both hands and said wistfully, "I understand that, but until I see him with my own eyes, my heart hangs in the air, unable to settle."

Cheng Qiaobei could understand—anyone would feel the same.

Ye Yujun glanced at the clock. "Oh dear, it’s dinner time. I’ll go cook."

Cheng Qiaobei immediately got up, unbuttoning his cuffs as he said, "I’ll help you."

"Don’t bother; you’ll end up with the smell of oil and smoke all over your clothes," Ye Yujun said as she grabbed an apron. But Cheng Qiaobei was quicker and took the apron to wear himself. "Mom, I recently learned a new dish. Give me a chance to show off my skills."

Ye Yujun knew how thoughtful he was and appreciated how he cared for others. "Cheng, Mom is fine. Mom has weathered all kinds of storms in her life. I won’t be knocked down that easily. Hand over the apron; go to the living room and eat some fruit instead."

Cheng Qiaobei gently pushed her out. "Mom, please just give me this opportunity to shine. Once Ning Xi comes back and sees me cooking, she’ll hesitate to scold me for smoking anymore."

Ye Yujun raised an eyebrow. "Are you two planning for children?"

"No, no, no," Cheng Qiaobei quickly denied, afraid of her misunderstanding. "She just doesn’t like smelling smoke on me."

Ye Yujun seemed a little disappointed. "...Oh."

"Come on, Mom, sit down," Cheng Qiaobei gently guided Ye Yujun to the couch. "I’ll go cook now."

When Chen Ningxi entered the house, she saw Cheng Qiaobei busy in the kitchen.

His focused gaze alternated between the spatula in his hand and the ingredients in the pan. Under the light, his white shirt looked even cleaner, and his black trousers conveyed a calm and resolute demeanor. His upright figure in the kitchen stood out, like a mountain silently towering there.

Chen Ningxi removed her coat and hung it up. As she entered the living room, Ye Yujun said, "Cheng insisted that I not lift a finger and cooked dinner all by himself."

"Let him do it; his cooking is delicious," Chen Ningxi said, placing her phone on the coffee table and heading to the kitchen. "Anything left to stir-fry? I’ll help."

Cheng Qiaobei turned off the stove. "No need. I’ve finished it all."

She took the dish to the dining room and called out to the others in the living room, "Mom, let’s eat."

During dinner, none of the three brought up Chen Weichuan’s situation. Since the evidence had been submitted, all they could do was wait for the results of the investigation.

After the meal, Cheng Qiaobei proactively suggested to Chen Ningxi that the two of them stay to keep her company.

When Ye Yujun learned that they weren’t leaving tonight, her heart warmed. She felt even more reassured knowing that her son-in-law wasn’t someone she’d misjudged—he was empathetic, upright, and full of human kindness.

That night, Ye Yujun found herself unable to sleep. She kept tossing and turning, thinking about Chen Weichuan, wondering how he was doing and when he could come home. Eventually, she went to sit on the balcony for a while.

There, surrounded by rows of racks filled with succulents, she quietly closed the door and sat in a wicker chair, her gaze resting on the plants as her thoughts drifted into a daze.

Cheng Qiaobei opened his eyes. Chen Ningxi, a light sleeper, heard the faint sound of the door softly closing.

"Did my mom get up?" Chen Ningxi asked.

Cheng Qiaobei murmured, "Probably still thinking about Dad, unable to sleep."

Chen Ningxi propped herself up in bed to sit, about to get up when Cheng Qiaobei pulled her down. "What are you doing?"

"I’m going to the balcony to keep her company and chat for a bit."

Cheng Qiaobei let go of her hand. "I’ll go too."

Chen Ningxi said, "Why are you going? Just sleep."

"Seeing me makes Mom happy. What do you think I’m going for?" Cheng Qiaobei insisted and followed Chen Ningxi to the balcony.

When the door softly closed again behind them, Ye Yujun turned around and saw the two of them walking in. "Did I wake you up?" she asked.

"No, Mom. I couldn’t sleep and thought of pulling Ningxi to chat with me for a while, but turns out you couldn’t sleep either. Perfect timing—let’s talk together then?" Cheng Qiaobei smiled.

Ye Yujun glanced at him with amusement. "Mom’s eyesight is failing, not blind. You two don’t need to keep me company. I’m fine. You both have work tomorrow—go get some rest. At my age, being unable to sleep for a few hours is normal. I’ll sit here for a bit and then head back."

Chen Ningxi sat on a nearby wicker chair. "We’re young, we stay up late—it’s perfect timing to sit and chat for a while."

With the underfloor heating keeping the house comfortably warm, the night air didn’t feel cold.

Cheng Qiaobei spoke apologetically. "Mom, you haven’t asked who framed Dad. That person... he’s actually related to me. He’s my brother-in-law. He used to be with the company too, managing dozens of chain hotels. Recently, I forced him out of the company, and because of that, he’s holding a grudge. So... Mom, I didn’t expect him to drag Dad into this mess. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s me."

"How can it be your fault?" Ye Yujun said. "Did you force him to falsely accuse your dad? Or did you help him do it?"

"..." Of course, neither.

"Since it’s not, then don’t take the blame on yourself. Whoever commits a crime must pay for it. As for your dad, he’s upright and honorable—it’s not like he’ll be afraid of being falsely accused. The truth will come out one day."

Chen Ningxi arched an eyebrow. "You make such good points, yet you’re still losing sleep over worry."

"You child," Ye Yujun smiled despite herself. "I understand the logic, but worrying isn’t something that can be eased with a few words or reasoning. Only when your dad walks back through the door will I truly feel at ease."

Seeing the conversation veer toward heavier topics again, Cheng Qiaobei quickly changed the subject. "Mom, why don’t you tell me about Ningxi’s childhood stories?"

Ye Yujun gazed up at the dazzling night sky, memories of the past flooding into her mind.

"Oh, there are plenty of funny stories from Ningxi’s childhood."

Once the topic began, it was hard to stop, especially when it was about Chen Ningxi’s younger days.

Cheng Qiaobei’s eyes lit up—he was brimming with curiosity. "Mom, tell me more!"

"Mom... Mom, don’t!" Chen Ningxi quickly tried to stop her. "Don’t say anything—he’ll just keep teasing me about it later."

Cheng Qiaobei gently shook Chen Ningxi’s arm. "I promise I won’t."

"Like hell you won’t," Chen Ningxi said with exasperation, pulling away from his grip. "Mom, just look at that photo of me holding the goose—he laughs at it every chance he gets."

Cheng Qiaobei hugged Chen Ningxi reassuringly. "I wouldn’t laugh. This time, definitely not. Mom, go ahead and tell."

Watching the two, Ye Yujun couldn’t help but feel her spirits brighten.

Who knows how long they chatted? At some point, Ye Yujun saw Chen Ningxi dozing off in the wicker chair, and she asked Cheng Qiaobei to carry her back to bed.

In a low voice, Cheng Qiaobei assured her, "Mom, don’t worry—Dad will definitely be fine."

Ye Yujun nodded gently.

"There’s something else I need to tell you in advance," Cheng Qiaobei glanced at the sleeping figure in the chair. "I’m leaving the company."

Ye Yujun had suspected as much. Given everything that had happened, it would be difficult for him to remain in his position. Submitting the evidence had undoubtedly caused a rift with his sister and brother-in-law. Since they were all under the same roof in the same company, it was unavoidable for tensions to arise.

"It must’ve been hard for you."

"Not at all. This has nothing to do with my dad’s case. I’ve been wanting to leave for a while. This time—it’s just the perfect opportunity."
