Chapter 320: Is It a Deal?
Chapter 320: Chapter 320: Is It a Deal?
Zheng Rongxi walked up to the nursery door, took a deep breath, adjusted her emotions, and then pushed the door open to enter.
When she saw her come in, Cheng Siluo handed the baby to the nanny. "Mom, let’s talk outside."
Zheng Rongxi stepped back out and followed Cheng Siluo to the room next door.
Downstairs was silent. Sun Dongchen slouched on the living room sofa, his head hanging low, silent.
Cheng Siluo closed the door. Although she hadn’t been downstairs, she could roughly guess the outcome, given the tacit understanding between mother and daughter.
"Mom, Dongchen didn’t handle this well, but his opponent is Cheng Qiaobei. No one can come out ahead against him; both you and I know this. Over the years, we’ve clashed with him so many times, but when have we ever won?
We have to admit, he’s not someone you can easily deal with." Cheng Siluo’s tone shifted. "But no matter how foolish he is, he’s still my husband, the father of my child. I won’t abandon him when he needs me the most."
With her brows tightly knitted, Zheng Rongxi’s face showed displeasure. "Since you were little, everything in the family was done to please you. Whatever you wanted, your father and I tried our best to give you. Even the person you married was your own choice. Although we didn’t approve at the time, we still gave in.
But now, I realize that we should never have listened to you back then. We shouldn’t have let you marry a man like him."
No matter how many flaws Sun Dongchen had, Cheng Siluo wouldn’t allow anyone to look down on him, not even her own mother.
"Mom," she said, her resolve strengthening the more she was challenged. She wanted to prove her point to her mother. "Dongchen treats me well. Neither I nor the child can be without him."
Zheng Rongxi said in frustration, "Don’t be foolish."
Cheng Siluo replied, "I’m not foolish. Dongchen and I have been together since college. We got married, had a child. I won’t give up on him."
"You’re so stubborn... impossible to reason with." Zheng Rongxi’s headache grew more intense. She braced herself against the table, her body swaying slightly.
Cheng Siluo quickly moved to support her. "Mom, are you okay?"
Zheng Rongxi sat down, steadied herself, and said, "Siluo, you have to trust me. In this world, the people least likely to deceive you are your parents. Dongchen won’t escape this time. Cheng Qiaobei won’t let him go. If he ends up in jail, what will happen to you and the child? What will people say about you? When the child grows up, are you going to let other kids follow him around calling him the convict’s child?
You can’t just think about yourself; you have to think about the child."
Cheng Siluo fell silent. "..."
Footsteps sounded on the stairs. Sun Dongchen looked up and saw Cheng Siluo coming down, holding a first aid kit.
Hope reignited in his heart. He got up to meet her, grabbing her hands. "Wife, wife... you can’t leave me. Don’t give up on me, wife..."
He poured the despair of clinging to their marriage into every word he uttered.
Cheng Siluo sat down, her emotions steady, without highs or lows. She looked at the man kneeling by her feet and calmly began treating his wounds, wiping the dried blood from his face. She said:
"Dongchen, listen to me. This time, it’s not going to be easy to resolve."
"Hiss..." Sun Dongchen winced from the pain, his eyes filled with panic. "I know. What do we do, wife? You’re the only one who can save me."
Cheng Siluo picked up another alcohol-soaked cotton ball and continued cleaning as she spoke. "I can wait for you, but I also have to think about the child."
Sun Dongchen could sense that Cheng Siluo was being persuaded. Seeing her avoid eye contact only confirmed his suspicion. He grabbed her hand tightly and said:
"Wife, I know I was wrong. Please, give me another chance. Help me, okay? I have no one else but you. The child is still so young. Just last night, I was dreaming of how happy our future would be with you and the child."
Cheng Siluo’s heart softened. After all, he was someone she had truly loved and lived with for many years.
"Husband, listen to me. My mom’s concerns aren’t completely unreasonable. We can’t just think about ourselves; we also have to consider the company’s situation. For now, you should stay at the apartment in the western suburbs. During this time, I’ll try to negotiate with Cheng Qiaobei and do my best to help you resolve this. If I can’t, I’ll make sure to hire the best lawyer for you."
She was Sun Dongchen’s last lifeline, and she wouldn’t let go easily.
Sun Dongchen said, "I won’t divorce you."
Cheng Siluo applied the bandage and soothed him. "I didn’t agree to divorce either. What I’m doing now is just a precaution. You staying at the apartment is important. If the police really start to pursue this, and they take you away from here, the news will spread quickly. The company’s stock has just begun to recover; it can’t handle the shock of another wave of negative press. As for the person you reached out to, you need to make sure he insists that this has nothing to do with you. For the rest, we can provide financial compensation."
Sun Dongchen understood her meaning, nodded, and said, "I see, wife. That person won’t say anything. I’ve helped him before."
Cheng Siluo said, "And so what if you’ve helped him? People are quick to forget kindness but rarely refuse a tempting offer. Without a vested interest, why would anyone take the fall for you?"
Sun Dongchen nodded. "I’ll find him right away."
"No, you can’t show up yourself. Find someone else to contact him," Cheng Siluo directed. "Pick someone reliable. Give them the address and send them with cash. No wire transfers."
Sun Dongchen thought of someone. "Alright, I’ll handle it."
Meanwhile, Cheng Qiaobei’s car was heading toward the police station. A document folder rested on the passenger seat, containing witness testimony and other evidence proving Chen Weichuan’s innocence. As long as the materials were submitted, the case against him would be cleared quickly.
The car stopped at a traffic light. Just two more streets to go.
Cheng Siluo’s call came in. He glanced at the number, not wanting to answer. Yet she dialed again, and even when he rejected the call, she relentlessly kept trying, one call after another.
Finally annoyed, he picked up. "What is it?"
Cheng Siluo said, "I’ll give you the hotels under my name in exchange for letting Dongchen go. How’s that?"
Within the group, there were chain hotels. Adding the ones managed by both her and Sun Dongchen, the total came to roughly thirty.
Cheng Qiaobei sneered, "Not interested. Anything else? If not, I’m hanging up."
"Wait." Cheng Siluo said, "Weren’t you fighting with me over these hotels in the past? Why don’t you want them now? Playing hard to get?"
Cheng Qiaobei couldn’t be bothered to explain. "Like you said, that was in the past. I don’t want them now. Is that so hard to believe?"
Cheng Siluo had expected him to be greedy, but she hadn’t anticipated just how much. "How about three percent of the company’s shares? Deal?"
Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow, letting out a cold chuckle. "Heh... I never thought our dear Miss Cheng would turn into a fool for love. Trading three percent of the company for an idiot? Does Dad know?"
Cheng Siluo swallowed hard. "He’ll find out, but for now, you need to help Dongchen."
The traffic light turned green. Cheng Qiaobei stepped on the gas pedal.
The sound of car horns came through the receiver. Cheng Siluo grew anxious but kept her tone steady. "Ten percent. Do we have a deal?"
