Chapter 300: Chapter 300: Secretly Hidden in the Heart

By the time they reached their destination, Chen Ningxi still hadn’t mentioned changing seats, and Lu Xingyan had to sit with Wang Qing until the end.

Wang Qing was talkative, but after chatting for a while, Lu Xingyan started to feel sleepy and put his hat over his face, folding his arms as he fell asleep.

Upon arriving at the Donggou substation, they immediately saw a red banner in the courtyard that read, "Danjiang City Power Supply Company Officially Launches the 2023 Winter ’Big Training’."

Chen Ningxi stepped out of the car and nearly slipped, several hands reached out to support her.

"Thanks to you all, otherwise I’d have a work injury today," Chen Ningxi said with an embarrassed smile.

Lu Xingyan retracted his hand from her arm, only feeling that Chen Ningxi was very light.

It had rained last night, and the low temperatures had left a layer of ice on the road, making it slippery with every step.

Tao Wanqing, the head of Donggang Power Station, was waiting in the courtyard early. Seeing Chen Ningxi, he warmly invited everyone inside.

"It’s cold, everyone come in and warm up."

Considering the weather and the slick roads, Chen Ningxi said, "Let’s not go inside. The icy rain makes the road slippery. Let’s finish early so we can head back."

Since the leader had said so, Tao Wanqing didn’t insist and began gathering everyone for the activities.

By the end of the morning, they had competed in four or five projects, and Lu Xingyan was in the final group for the installation and wiring.

Chen Ningxi happened to come by to inspect, and Lu Xingyan wanted to impress her but ended up making more mistakes the harder he tried.

With a clink, a screw fell to the ground. Lu Xingyan instinctively looked at Chen Ningxi, who just gave a slight smile, "Don’t worry, take it steady."

Her forgiving smile made Lu Xingyan feel ashamed, not daring to meet her gaze for fear of seeing disappointment in her eyes.

Awkwardly picking up the screw from the floor, he continued installing with his head down.

Master Wu had taught him, and Lu Xingyan had practiced privately, thinking he would be the fastest and most stable to complete the task. Yet, when the results were announced, he was the last in his group.

Not only did he connect the wires incorrectly, but his speed also wasn’t as good as his colleagues.

Lu Xingyan instinctively looked at Chen Ningxi, her approving gaze on the first-place winner, praised them a few times, and when she got to him, Chen Ningxi said,

"Lu, keep it up."

Lu Xingyan looked at her, "...Yeah, I will."

Lu Xingyan left the training ground, his head hanging low, disappointedly walking back to Wu Jinchuan. Wu Jinchuan turned around and asked him,

"Feeling discouraged?"

Lu Xingyan nodded, "A bit."

Wu Jinchuan laughed, "It’s nothing big. Next time, aim for first place, and it’s settled."

Lu Xingyan replied dejectedly, "They’re not only faster at installing than me. It’s like they have a blueprint in their minds and don’t even need to think, just start assembling with the tools. I have to look at the lines for ages and confirm each installation step before starting."

Wu Jinchuan asked him, "Do you know what that’s called?"

Without hesitation, Lu Xingyan said, "Experience, they have lots of experience."

Wu Jinchuan shook his head lightly, "You only got half of it right. The youngest in your group is Liu Zhen, who’s worked for six years. Lu and Lin have already worked for eight years. They’re all frontline workers, dealing with maintenance every day. When they grab the tools, they know the structure even with their eyes closed. So, do you understand the reason now?"

Lu Xingyan slowly understood, "Time?"

"Exactly," Wu Jinchuan smiled with satisfaction and continued, "In our work, experience is gained over time. I started out like a rookie too. If you want to be like them, you have to invest time in honing your skills, learning, and practicing more. Dedicating yourself to this job, experience is the fruit of time. If you want it sweet, you have to put in the time. Without enough time, the fruit will inevitably be bitter and astringent. You’re still young, don’t get beaten down so easily. Stand strong, young man."

Lu Xingyan truly took it to heart, nodding, "I understand, Master."

Wu Jinchuan smiled, "That’s right, you need that fighting spirit. Let’s go eat. There’s still activities in the afternoon, and we need to be full to work well."

Since there was no cafeteria at the station, they booked three tables at a restaurant on the street.

Lu Xingyan followed the crowd, his eyes always on Chen Ningxi ahead.

He couldn’t say why, but he simply liked watching her and hearing her talk. At the gym, he had noticed her.

With an extraordinary demeanor and beauty, each time he saw her working out alone, he noticed her gentle and independent maturity, emanating a unique charm.

Later, after finally striking up a conversation with her, he found out she was already married.

Lu Xingyan kept the affection hidden in his heart.

"Lu."

Wang Qing caught up from behind, and Lu Xingyan turned to hear her say, "This is just practice, don’t take it too hard."

Lu Xingyan smiled, "It’s fine, I’m not taking it to heart."

Wang Qing said, "I’m just here to participate in the activity. I didn’t think about getting any ranking."

Lu Xingyan acknowledged with an "uh-huh," not continuing the conversation.

Wang Qing didn’t speak either, silently walking alongside him.

To others, they seemed close, almost giving the impression they had a mutual interest.

Inside the restaurant, Tao Wanqing called for the lady boss. Everything had been arranged in advance. Once they entered, he had the servers start bringing out the dishes.

Everyone seated around the round tables, with Chen Ningxi taking the main seat inside, flanked by Tao Wanqing and some other instructors and evaluators who had come to assist with the activity.

Wang Qing and Lu Xingyan were the last to enter the room and saw that almost all the seats were taken.

Suddenly, someone called, "Wang Qing, over here."

At the table by the window, a young guy called out to her.

"Come on," Wang Qing tugged on Lu Xingyan’s sleeve, "there’s a spot."

Lu Xingyan followed her over, but the young guy who called Wang Qing didn’t seem happy, "There’s only one seat here."

"I’ll find another seat." Lu Xingyan said, just as Wang Qing replied, "Don’t worry, we’ll just add a chair."

He was about to pull her in, but Qi Youlin at the table said, "It’s really full now. Li Chao and Jiang Dong already added chairs."

Lu Xingyan said, "There’s no room; I’ll head to another table."

Wang Qing refused, "Let’s move; we won’t sit here."

Qi Youlin, displeased, looked at Lu Xingyan, "You could just find another chair instead of insisting on bringing her."

It became a matter of insistence—one wanted to sit, one said there was no space.

Lu Xingyan, a bit annoyed, pushed Wang Qing toward the table, "You go ahead and sit; don’t worry about me."

Just as Wang Qing was about to speak, Qi Youlin pulled her arm, seating her on the chair, and complained, "I went through all the trouble to save you a seat, and you call someone else."

Wang Qing responded confidently, "I didn’t ask you to save me a seat."

At this moment, Lu Xingyan was the only one standing in the restaurant. Wu Jinchuan spotted him and waved, "Lu, come over here."

Lu Xingyan followed the sound to see Wu Jinchuan, sitting beside Chen Ningxi, smiling. He headed over to Wu Jinchuan.

Tao Wanqing called a server to add another seat, and Wu Jinchuan adjusted, "Sit here."
