Fated Love With the Billionaire
Chapter 293: Don’t Go Too Far

Chapter 293: Chapter 293: Don’t Go Too Far

It was already early winter, and the temperature had dropped a few degrees from the daytime. There were far fewer people exercising in the park at night.

Chen Ningxi was surprised, "You went to my dad’s office?"

"Yeah," Cheng Qiaobei wrapped her small hand in his and stuffed it into his coat pocket, saying, "He’s really busy. Just before I got there, he’d finished a meeting. His desk is piled high with materials just like yours. Are all your offices this uniform?"

Chen Ningxi said, "I can’t compare to him. He’s concerned with the food, clothing, and shelter of everyone in the city."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Neither of you have it easy."

Chen Ningxi asked again, "Did you just deliver tea? Didn’t talk about anything else?"

Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow, "After everything that blew up a few days ago, I had to go over there myself and apologize."

Chen Ningxi said, "I believe you. I also explained to them."

The wind suddenly picked up, making the trees along the road sway left and right.

Cheng Qiaobei stopped abruptly, turned around, and sheltered her in his arms. When the wind subsided a bit, he took her hand again and started walking back.

"Let’s go back, it’s getting windy."

As they walked, he said, "You’ve done a lot for me, and I know it. I will repay your kindness doubly in the future."

Chen Ningxi said, "You’re suddenly saying this, I don’t even know how to respond."

The night path was dim, and the moonlight stretched their shadows until their joined hands overlapped and intertwined.

Cheng Qiaobei said, "There’s another thing I didn’t have the chance to mention to your dad. He was busy, so I left."

His tone made it clear it was something important.

Chen Ningxi said, "Go ahead."

Cheng Qiaobei, in a serious tone, said, "The fabricated news that was being hyped has been retracted. But then, a bunch of paid posters started spreading rumors online. I found out who was behind it."

Chen Ningxi was curious, "Who? Do you know them?"

"More than just know them," Cheng Qiaobei felt nauseous remembering Sun Dongchen’s expression at the time, "Sun Dongchen, my freeloading brother-in-law."

Chen Ningxi was puzzled, "Him? How could he?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Do you remember him?"

Chen Ningxi said, "On the wedding day, he seemed really attentive to your sister."

"Heh," Cheng Qiaobei scoffed, "If he didn’t cater to her, who would give him money to spend? Purely a kept man. I never understood what Cheng Siluo saw in him in the first place."

Chen Ningxi was puzzled. After all, they’re family. What benefit could he gain from plotting against Cheng Qiaobei?

"Are you sure it’s him?"

Cheng Qiaobei had a complex look, "I didn’t want it to be him. Over the years, no matter how he messed around in the company, I never used him as a target. But my indifference made him think I was an easy target. He tried to take this chance to kick me out but overestimated himself, and I got him kicked out of the company. I also gave him a beating."

"Uh?" Chen Ningxi thought she heard wrong, "You hit him?"

Cheng Qiaobei said solemnly, "You and my parents are my last bottom line. This beating, he deserved it."

Chen Ningxi hurriedly checked him over, concerned, "Are you okay, no injuries?"

Cheng Qiaobei looked down, seeing her flustered manner, and pulled her into his arms. He gently rubbed his chin on top of her head, "I’m fine. With his physique, he couldn’t possibly hurt me. I’m not injured."

He gazed tenderly at her, "Wifey, apart from you, I have no other aspirations in this world."

"Why are you suddenly saying this?" Chen Ningxi hugged him tightly, always feeling like he was a lonely whale at that moment, with few who understood him.

She smoothed her hand over Cheng Qiaobei’s broad back, "Don’t get into fights for us in the future. My parents and I will worry about you. We especially don’t want you to get hurt."

Cheng Qiaobei softly kissed the top of her head, "Understood."

Hearing voices approaching, Chen Ningxi quickly nudged him, "Someone’s coming, let go."

Cheng Qiaobei just hugged her tighter, his large hand shielding her head, and whispered in her ear, "I’ve got you hidden, Miss Ostrich."

It was said that ostriches bury their heads in the sand when scared.

Until the passersby had moved by, seeing them embraced, pausing their conversation for a few seconds before hurrying on.

Cheng Qiaobei lowered his hand, gazing at her laughingly, while Chen Ningxi straightened the hair that had been pressed out of place, saying, "Ostriches don’t bury their heads in the sand because they’re scared. I read an entry that they run quickly when frightened. As for burying their heads in the sand, it might be related to their need to swallow small stones to help digest food."

Cheng Qiaobei laughed heartily, his broad laughter washing away all the day’s gloom.

"Wifey, are you allergic to romance? Here we are holding each other, the atmosphere just right, and instead of sharing a kiss, you’re explaining why ostriches bury their heads."

Chen Ningxi’s cheeks turned red from his laughter, and she covered Cheng Qiaobei’s mouth with her hands, "Stop laughing, don’t laugh."

All the way, Cheng Qiaobei couldn’t help but want to laugh, thinking of Chen Ningxi’s serious lecture about nature. Once they reached a quiet stretch of road in the neighborhood, Cheng Qiaobei played the background music from Animal World on his phone.

Accompanied by the serene music, Cheng Qiaobei cleared his throat and said, "Spring is coming, everything is reviving, and the animals are beginning to get busy. The ostrich sticks its head in the sand. Why does an ostrich bury its head in the sand?"

Chen Ningxi anticipated his lines, quickly picking up a stick from under the trees by the roadside, "Cheng Qiaobei—you stop right there—"

He ran as she chased, buoyant in his glee.

Finally, she caught up with him at the building entrance. She used the stick to gesture at him, "Enough with the jokes? Are you going to laugh at ostriches for a whole year? And you still dare to play music!"

Cheng Qiaobei, with a look of defeat, raised his phone, "Without a BGM, my words wouldn’t make sense."

The stick broke with a snap as Chen Ningxi poked him in the stomach.

Chen Ningxi: "..."

Cheng Qiaobei raised his hands in surrender, "Can’t blame me for that, your weapon wasn’t upgraded, too fragile."

She puffed her cheeks, "Don’t push it too far."

Cheng Qiaobei chuckled, "Alright, alright, it was my fault it broke."

Chen Ningxi flashed him an annoyed look, "Nuisance."

She tossed the stick and went to open the door, while Cheng Qiaobei followed with a cheeky expression, "I’ll show you just how not annoying I can be in a bit."

From his tone, it was evident he was about to make another flirty joke. Chen Ningxi briskly stepped into the elevator, "I don’t want to see."

Cheng Qiaobei wrapped an arm around her waist, tilting his head to ask, "Isn’t persistence key to success? You say you don’t want to see, but you will?"

Chen Ningxi pointed above his head, "There are cameras. You might already be famous in the neighborhood for being the clingiest one."

Cheng Qiaobei casually said, "Clinging to my wife—it’s needless to mention how many women would envy you."

Chen Ningxi chuckled twice, "Thank you so much, Chairman Cheng."

Cheng Qiaobei planted a kiss on her cheek, "Too kind, Manager Chen."

Late at night, the person in the bedroom had long fallen asleep from exhaustion, while the study’s light remained on. Cheng Qiaobei, wearing pajamas, sat at the desk with a cup of coffee, opened his laptop, entered a password, and accessed a secret document.

Project, Eastern First-class.
