Chapter 247: Chapter 247: Unrequited Love
Cheng Qiaobei, with a stern expression, asked, "How’s he doing?"
Gao Heng said, "Still in surgery, not sure."
Wei Lai was puzzled, "How could he just get stabbed like that?"
The incident happened suddenly. Gao Heng, acting as Xu Gao’s attorney, was the first to be notified and rushed to the hospital. On the way, he contacted Wei Lai, informing her only that Xu Gao was injured and being rushed to the hospital, without any details.
"The police said Xu Gao got into an argument and fight with someone inside. But I asked the doctor; the wounds are concentrated on the back, which couldn’t be caused by a mutual brawl." Gao Heng shifted the conversation, "I suspect someone doesn’t want Xu Gao to talk."
Cheng Qiaobei’s eyes were cold as ice, and he had thought of this as soon as he heard about Xu Gao’s incident.
"The simplest way to deal with Xu Gao is to silence him. Only a dead man stays quiet."
"These people are way too bold," Wei Lai still had a lingering fear, and said to Cheng Qiaobei, "They must know Xu Gao was saved and might come to the hospital."
Cheng Qiaobei, without hesitation and no time to think further, said, "We must move Xu Gao to another location. I’ll contact Prosecutor Federico."
He walked over to the window and dialed a sequence of numbers, while the two people on the bench turned their gaze toward the tightly closed door of the operating room.
Wei Lai said, "This will involve you, right?"
Gao Heng turned his face, smiling, "Worried about me?"
Wei Lai, however, was serious, "It’s no joke, Gao Heng."
Gao Heng reassured her, "You’re overthinking it."
He stood up, and Wei Lai called after him, "Where are you going?"
"There’s a coffee machine around the corner. I’ll get a cup of coffee for you." After saying that, he walked away.
He returned with two cans of coffee, opened a can, and handed it to Wei Lai, who took it and thanked him.
Gao Heng said, "Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve me. It’s fine."
Wei Lai said, "Luckily, Chairman Cheng had you organize things ahead of time. Otherwise, Xu Gao’s consequences would be unimaginable."
Gao Heng nodded, "Chairman Cheng prepared ahead; Xu Gao is lucky to have survived. When he returns to the country, he should thank Chairman Cheng properly."
"He..." Wei Lai hesitated.
The Xu Gao of the past definitely wouldn’t appreciate it, but a person who has had a close brush with death should find enlightenment.
Wei Lai: "Maybe."
Cheng Qiaobei and Prosecutor Federico exchanged contact information when they met in the park last time. Unexpectedly, Prosecutor Federico had already learned about Xu Gao’s injury and dispatched personnel to the hospital to protect him, who should be arriving soon.
Cheng Qiaobei returned and told the two, "Federico sent people to the hospital. Leave the rest to him."
Gao Heng handed coffee to Cheng Qiaobei and said, "But the police are here too, questioning another injured person in the ward about what happened. They should be finishing up soon."
Cheng Qiaobei said, "No need for them to protect anyone. The people sent by Prosecutor Federico will coordinate."
Wei Lai lowered her voice and asked, "Do you suspect the police are involved?"
Gao Heng paused, "Whether they’re involved or not, it’s hard to say, but for now, we can only trust Prosecutor Federico."
Cheng Qiaobei didn’t comment, "After all, we’re not locals and don’t understand the local judicial system or internal issues."
Wei Lai vaguely sensed the situation was complicated and dangerous and started worrying about everyone’s safety.
At two in the morning, Xu Gao was wheeled out of the operating room.
The doctor explained Xu Gao’s injuries: thirteen stitches on the head, four stab wounds on the back, spleen removal. He still needed observation and hadn’t escaped life-threatening danger.
The three stood in the ward, with two people sent by the prosecutor’s office guarding the door to protect Xu Gao.
The person on the hospital bed hadn’t awakened yet. Cheng Qiaobei said, "You two go back first, I’ll stay here tonight."
Wei Lai said, "I’ll stay too."
Cheng Qiaobei looked at Gao Heng, "There’s no need for so many people here. Gao Heng, safely escort Wei Lai back to the hotel."
"Okay." Gao Heng tried to persuade Wei Lai, "Let’s go, don’t make Chairman Cheng worry anymore. It’s very late now; let him rest a bit. We’ll come back in the morning."
Wei Lai: "Call if anything happens."
Cheng Qiaobei: "Mm."
Just after the two left, the police came to the ward.
After negotiating at the door with the two protectors, the police came in, saw Xu Gao wasn’t awake, and left.
Near dawn, the person on the hospital bed woke up, and as the anesthesia wore off, Xu Gao groaned in pain, waking up Cheng Qiaobei, who was dozing in a chair.
He snapped his eyes open, saw Xu Gao move, and quickly put his legs down to approach, shouting in the faint yellow light of the bedside lamp:
"Xu Gao, Xu Gao, how do you feel?"
Xu Gao’s lips trembled from pain, and he let out a hoarse response, "Ugh... it hurts..." Then suddenly recalled what happened before he was knocked out, gripping Cheng Qiaobei’s arm in terror, "Someone’s trying to kill me, to kill me. Cheng Qiaobei, take me back to the country, take me back... please, save me."
The fact that he knew fear showed his brain was fine.
Cheng Qiaobei comforted him, trying to free his arm that was being gripped, "You’re very safe right now. The people outside were sent by Prosecutor Federico specifically to protect you."
"Don’t leave." Xu Gao looked terrified, breathing rapidly, gripping so tightly it was scary, as if Cheng Qiaobei was his only lifeline.
Cheng Qiaobei gently said, "I won’t leave. I’m here."
Xu Gao’s emotions slowly calmed down, and with a trembling voice, he said, "I’m safe now?"
Cheng Qiaobei nodded, "Mm. Can you recall what happened?"
Xu Gao, exhausted, was overwhelmed with pain from the wounds, contorting his features, endured it, and said, "Yes."
"At the time, I was queuing for food. Suddenly, someone pushed me from behind, and the plate in my hand hit the person in front. He turned around and punched me. Before I could say anything, there was a sharp pain in my brain, and I don’t remember anything after that."
Cheng Qiaobei understood; the whole thing was someone deliberately planning with the intent of getting rid of Xu Gao.
...
After leaving the hospital.
Gao Heng’s car drove toward the hotel. During this time together, he had developed a subtle fondness for Wei Lai, considering it a good opportunity to probe.
"Wei Lai,"
"Hmm?"
"Does Chairman Cheng take you with him on every business trip? Or did you know he was coming to Milan and wanted to join?"
Wei Lai, sleepy, leaned back in the seat for a nap. Upon hearing him, she opened her eyes and said, "He doesn’t take me every time."
Gao Heng blinked. Wei Lai hadn’t come to Milan often in recent years, but every time she did, they met for meals, feeling like they were still in school: friendly, familiar, always having a great time. Their relationship was somewhere between classmates and friends, him being very polite and her being very easygoing. Yet, they had never talked about anything related to feelings.
Because she was so drowsy, her brain’s reaction time was slow. Wei Lai suddenly understood what he was curious about and said:
"Chairman Cheng bases the decision to take people on the project he’s handling. As for who to bring, that’s also based on the project. The company has more than one secretary, and there are many capable people around Chairman Cheng. He decides all of them."
"..." So, she didn’t voluntarily choose to come.
Gao Heng smirked self-deprecatingly; he had overthought, feeling foolishly sentimental.
