The work of inspecting power theft was nearing its end, and Shangxing Special Cable had sent the first batch of goods as agreed in the contract.

Since Chen Ningxi realized Pan Cheng’s intentions were not pure, she paid extra attention to his project bid, instructing the company’s chief engineer, Dai Liang, to strictly adhere to the acceptance standards and procedures for any goods sourced from Shangxing Cable. If issues arose during use, they were to be reported to her immediately. Problems would be investigated to identify causes: product quality would be referred to the manufacturer’s after-sales service, while human error would result in individual accountability.

Although Dai Liang did not understand why Chen Ningxi suddenly became so cautious about the Shangxing matter, he knew that once several million worth of cables and supporting equipment were in use, they concerned the safety of people’s lives and property. Anything concerning lives was not a trivial matter. He believed there must be a reason for Chen Ningxi’s actions.

Early in the morning, Pan Cheng arrived at the Danjiang Institute to deliver the documents for the first batch of cables to her office.

Upon knocking on the office door, he found Chen Ningxi tidying up. Pan Cheng walked in and greeted familiarly, "Heading out for inspections again?"

Chen Ningxi maintained only a polite tone, her demeanor distant, as she replied, "Mm. What do you need from me?"

Pan Cheng placed a file box on her desk, "The first batch of goods arrives the day after tomorrow, here are the relevant documents for the cables."

The initial acceptance check involves verifying the documents provided by the manufacturer. Because of a familial relationship between him and the deputy manager, Dai Chi, it was better to avoid any potential conflicts by not involving him.

Opening the file box, she examined the documents inside: a copy of Shangxing Special Electric’s business license, a product production license, a quality inspection report, a CCC certification, a certificate of conformity, and other materials, all bearing an official company stamp. These documents are mandatory; failure to provide any of them would mean the cable could not be proven as manufactured by a legitimate company, and subsequent acceptance would be out of the question. Chen Ningxi could choose to reject the goods.

The office was quiet. Chen Ningxi concentrated on reviewing the documents. Opposite her, Pan Cheng appeared to fiddle with his phone. While she was not paying attention, he discreetly turned off the shutter sound and snapped a photo of her.

The photo on his phone could easily be misconstrued as taken from a boyfriend’s perspective.

"No issue," Chen Ningxi said succinctly, closing the file box and locking it in the filing cabinet.

Pan Cheng tactfully took his leave, "I’ll let you get back to work and return to the company." After walking a few steps, he paused, turning back to say, "Rain is forecast for today, don’t forget your umbrella."

Chen Ningxi merely smiled faintly without saying anything.

Passing by Dai Liang’s office, she went inside and closed the door.

Chen Ningxi said, "Shangxing’s cables are arriving Friday, you handle the reception, okay? Have Su Yong from the maintenance group take over your power theft inspection."

Dai Liang replied, "Sure, I’ll give Su Yong a call in a bit."

Chen Ningxi said, "Warehouse number one has been cleared out. Assign the staff, you lead them to oversee the entire process. Check that the outer packaging of the cables is intact, verify that the product brand on the packaging matches the cables’ specifications and model to what we ordered."

Dai Liang said, "No problem, which company should we use for subsequent acceptance?"

Chen Ningxi said, "Mr. Wang from Northeast Power has arranged for Anyu Detection Cable Quality Inspection Technology Co., Ltd., a company with authoritative certification qualifications, to conduct the acceptance."

Dai Liang said, "Anyu Quality Inspection, Mr. Wang is impressive."

Chen Ningxi said, "The volume of this batch is quite large, we might need to work overtime tonight."

Dai Liang, in an indifferent tone, said, "No worries, otherwise I’d just be doing nothing at home tonight."

Chen Ningxi said, "I don’t want to take up everyone’s rest time either, but you know, we urgently need this batch of goods."

Dai Liang smiled and said, "No problem."

Chen Ningxi said, "I’ll also be at the site Friday evening. If it gets too late, I’ll treat everyone to a late-night snack."

Dai Liang said, "You shouldn’t have to go to such expense."

"It’s settled," Chen Ningxi said, then left.

Coming from a technical background, Dai Liang had gained Chen Ningxi’s trust over the years at Danjiang Power. He exhibited straightforward attributes typical of an engineering man, meticulous in his work, and maintained proper boundaries in his interactions. He never overcomplicated things unnecessarily.

On Friday, as the goods were received, Dai Liang did not disappoint Chen Ningxi. Once the cables were transported to the warehouse, he closely supervised the process, ensuring careful inspection to prevent any mistakes at any step.

After finishing her work, Chen Ningxi headed to warehouse number one, making a phone call to Cheng Qiaobei as she walked.

Once the call connected, Chen Ningxi asked, "Are you off work yet?"

Cheng Qiaobei, wearing Bluetooth earphones, was typing rapidly on his keyboard with his eyes fixed on his computer screen, "Not yet, are you off work?" He glanced at the time, "I have a bit more to do, why don’t you head home in a cab first."

Chen Ningxi said, "I have to work late tonight too, just wanted to let you know."

"Found more power theft?"

"No, receiving a batch of cables."

"For how long?"

"I’m not at the warehouse yet, not sure."

"Got it."

Hanging up the call, Chen Ningxi arrived at the storage warehouse in the backyard.

From afar, she saw Dai Liang with a walkie-talkie calling out to people, so she headed in his direction. As she got closer, she overheard him saying to someone on the walkie-talkie, "Xue, you and Zhao San arrange the cables inside properly, make sure they’re neatly placed, and check for any damage."

A response came through the walkie-talkie, "Copy that, copy that."

Hearing footsteps, Dai Liang turned around and saw Chen Ningxi, "Manager Chen, you’re early."

Chen Ningxi asked, "How much has arrived?"

Dai Liang said, "They arrived late, the truck didn’t get here until almost afternoon. Seven trucks have entered the warehouse; currently unloading another one, with five more on the way soon."

Chen Ningxi said, "Progress is quite fast."

Checking his watch to estimate the time, Dai Liang said, "Unloading a truck takes almost an hour; the rest should be done around ten o’clock."

Chen Ningxi said, "Inform them that I’ll treat everyone to late-night snacks tonight."

Dai Liang raised the walkie-talkie, "Keep up the good work, Manager Chen is treating everyone to a late-night snack tonight."

Voices of cheerful acknowledgment came through the walkie-talkie.

Chen Ningxi sent a WeChat message to Cheng Qiaobei: should finish by ten at the earliest, everyone is working overtime, so I’m treating them to a late-night snack.

Focusing on drafting a business proposal, Cheng Qiaobei had his phone on a stand beside him. Seeing her WeChat message on the screen, he replied simply: OK.

With the night air cool and refreshing, the busy activity filled the warehouse courtyard, and the storeroom was brightly lit.

Wearing a safety helmet, Chen Ningxi joined in the logistics work, directing forklifts to transport cables.

When Cheng Qiaobei arrived at the Danjiang Institute, he immediately spotted her among the crowd.

Chen Ningxi had rolled up her pants and her white shirt was wrinkled. She was directing people over the walkie-talkie, completely unaware of the person walking up behind her. From Cheng Qiaobei’s perspective, her yellow helmet seemed oversized, making her face appear particularly small and rather cute.

Suddenly, feeling someone hold her arm, she instinctively shook it off. Seeing it was Cheng Qiaobei, she feigned annoyance, "You startled me."

Chen Ningxi said, "What brings you here?"
