Chapter 210: Chapter 210: Can’t Keep It Hidden
Chen Ningxi pushed Cheng Qiaobei away, "Alright, let’s eat first."
Cheng Qiaobei grabbed her wrist, and Chen Ningxi hissed in pain, "Hiss..."
He quickly let go, "Where are you hurt? Let me see."
There was no hiding it, not at all!
Chen Ningxi could only raise her hand, "It’s right here, but it’s not a big deal."
Cheng Qiaobei took her hand, rolled up her sleeve, and only saw the bandage wrapped around her wrist.
He looked up and asked, "How bad is it to have to wrap it in bandages?"
Chen Ningxi said, "It’s just a little cut."
"How long is the cut?"
Chen Ningxi gestured with two fingers, "Just this small, a little cut."
An expression of distress immediately showed on Cheng Qiaobei’s face, holding her wrist gently, "Did it bleed a lot?"
"No," Chen Ningxi reassured him, "the cut isn’t deep, it didn’t bleed much."
"Sigh..." Cheng Qiaobei held her carefully, "How did it happen?"
Chen Ningxi said, "I accidentally scratched it."
"Where did you scratch it? At home?"
What he meant was, if there was a safety hazard at home, he would quickly find someone to fix it, but Chen Ningxi was worried that Cheng Qiaobei might have noticed something, and her eyes darted around, "Outside, don’t ask anymore, let’s eat quickly, I’m starving."
She sat at the dining table, picked up her bowl and chopsticks, "Let’s see if Master Cheng’s cooking skills have declined."
Cheng Qiaobei pulled out the chair next to her and sat down, "That’s impossible."
They chatted while eating, mostly talking about Cheng Qiaobei’s matters in Yu Hang. After the meal, she gathered the dishes as he washed them, working seamlessly together.
Cheng Qiaobei brought a plate of sliced fruit to the living room, where Chen Ningxi, still wearing her old pajamas, was sitting on the sofa with a face mask. Cheng Qiaobei sat next to her, placed the fruit plate on the coffee table, picked up a small piece of watermelon, and fed it to her mouth. Chen Ningxi opened her mouth and ate it.
Chen Ningxi watched TV intently, while Cheng Qiaobei gazed at her profile, "You look more like someone with authority."
Chen Ningxi turned her face, restricted by the face mask, she could only pout and say,
"Don’t make me send you to the study to sleep during the happiest moments."
Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow, "I didn’t say anything just now."
Chen Ningxi squinted and smiled, "I didn’t hear anything just now either."
Cheng Qiaobei said, "Good. Take a step back, and family harmony is maintained."
Chen Ningxi said, "Take a step forward, and chaos ensues."
Cheng Qiaobei extended his hand, "Agreeing with Manager Chen, pleasant cooperation."
Chen Ningxi shook his hand, "Appreciating Manager Cheng’s attitude, win-win cooperation."
But after watching TV for a while, Cheng Qiaobei noticed she kept sitting up straight, "Aren’t you tired?"
Chen Ningxi said, "What’s tiring about watching TV?"
Cheng Qiaobei nodded his chin, "Aren’t you tired sitting like that? Lean back."
"...Oh." Chen Ningxi slowly leaned back.
As her back touched the sofa, Cheng Qiaobei seemed to hear a muffled sound of pain from her nose.
He started observing her again, and Chen Ningxi noticed from the corner of her eye. But to prevent Cheng Qiaobei from discovering anything unusual, she pretended to watch TV nonchalantly, even though the pain in her back was excruciating.
On the day she fell, her back only turned slightly blue, but as time passed, the bruised skin expanded, and the pain became more apparent. She had to sleep on her stomach and noticed through the mirror while showering that her back looked as frightening as a world map.
Cheng Qiaobei suddenly grabbed Chen Ningxi’s shoulder, pressing right on the injured spot.
"Ugh..." Chen Ningxi winced in pain.
Cheng Qiaobei let go, "Turn around."
Chen Ningxi looked at him, "Why?"
Cheng Qiaobei said, "Let me check your back."
Chen Ningxi was grateful for the face mask, or else he would have noticed something was off.
She couldn’t avoid it any longer; she had to speak up.
Chen Ningxi said, "I need to tell you something."
Cheng Qiaobei said, "Let’s talk later; let me check you first."
"No." Chen Ningxi held down her clothes, "Let me finish speaking first, or you can’t look."
Cheng Qiaobei had already guessed it was about her injury, "Go ahead."
Chen Ningxi pulled Cheng Qiaobei’s hand and held it, "Let’s agree first, you can’t get angry, and you can’t blame me."
"Okay." Cheng Qiaobei agreed readily.
Chen Ningxi started to recount the day she discovered electricity theft. When she mentioned going to the hospital and getting three stitches, Cheng Qiaobei was so distressed he turned her hand over to look but didn’t dare move recklessly for fear of hurting her.
When she mentioned hitting her back, he was prepared, but when he lifted her clothes and saw it, it was another feeling entirely.
No wonder she wore thick pajamas. The blue and purple on her shoulder had spread near her neck, and her thin back was covered with at least six or seven bruises. Some places were scabbing, and there was a scary-looking bruise on her waist that looked like it had hit a round object. His hand felt cold, and when his fingertips touched her skin, Chen Ningxi’s body tensed and moved away.
Cheng Qiaobei withdrew his hand, "Did it hurt?"
Chen Ningxi turned her head, smiling, "It didn’t hurt, it tickles."
How could it not hurt?
How could she still smile?
Cheng Qiaobei felt helpless, not knowing whether to hug her or not.
He slowly put down her clothes, his lips trembling with anger, "Where is that brick kiln factory? What’s its name?"
Chen Ningxi turned around, "What are you going to do, go after them?"
Cheng Qiaobei clenched his fist and pressed it hard on the sofa, rubbing his other hand on his forehead, "It’s not normal if I don’t find him after he hurt you."
"Why would you look for them? The police have already intervened, the person has been detained, I got my medical expenses compensated, and a letter of understanding was issued. If we go after them again, it will be wrong."
Chen Ningxi noticed Cheng Qiaobei’s face turning cold, his eyes fierce, a side she had never seen before.
"I don’t care."
Cheng Qiaobei’s breath was noticeably heavier, a sign of anger.
Chen Ningxi held his hand, "Don’t make me worry, everything is over, and I’m almost healed."
Cheng Qiaobei closed his eyes, his mind filled with images of her blue and purple bruised back, feeling like his heart was being stab after stab.
"Cheng Qiaobei," Chen Ningxi called him.
Cheng Qiaobei responded with a hum.
She said, "Didn’t we agree beforehand, not to be angry, not to blame me?"
Cheng Qiaobei’s gaze shifted to her, and the icy look softened upon meeting her eyes, "I’m not angry with you, nor do I blame you, I just feel sorry for you."
Chen Ningxi smiled warmly, "I know, I know everything."
He wanted to hold her, but embracing her shoulders would hurt the bruised area, so he raised his arm and then put it down.
Chen Ningxi continued to reassure him, "The laws have already punished them, if we go after them again, what do you want to do? Beat him up? If you end up hurting someone, even though we are in the right, in the end, we might be in the wrong, right?"
With the person he cherished being hurt, requiring three stitches, the more Cheng Qiaobei thought about it, the more his heart ached. As he gently caressed her hand, he said,
"Why didn’t you tell me the day you got hurt?"
Chen Ningxi asked, "If I told you, what would you do?"
Cheng Qiaobei answered without hesitation, "Isn’t it obvious? I would fly back immediately."
Chen Ningxi laughed, "That’s exactly why I didn’t tell you."
