Chapter 170: Chapter 170 Your Silence is Deafening

Chen Ningxi’s leg hurt so much that she couldn’t drive to work, so Cheng Qiaobei struggled to hold back his laughter as he drove her.

Despite being quite handsome, his face now looked really annoying.

At a red light, Chen Ningxi grumbled, "Who does this?"

Cheng Qiaobei deliberately misunderstood her, asking, "How do you want me to do it?"

"..." Chen Ningxi belatedly realized she had dug herself a big hole.

Blushing, she said, "I meant who would do it like you."

Cheng Qiaobei played the same cheeky game, "How do you want me to do it?"

"Don’t change the subject. I’m saying you lack restraint," Chen Ningxi said, then felt it wasn’t stern enough, "Do you know how much my leg hurts now? I still have to work, but my leg hurts because..."

She couldn’t find the right words to describe her discomfort, "... because of my pain, you’re sleeping in the guest room tonight."

Cheng Qiaobei responded with two words, "Not going."

"You think saying ’not going’ means you’re not going?" Chen Ningxi glared at him, "You’re going whether you like it or not."

"Domestic violence, right?" Cheng Qiaobei said righteously as he smoothly swerved around the car ahead.

Chen Ningxi was taken aback, "Me, domestic violence? Who did I abuse? You?"

Cheng Qiaobei shamelessly said, "Yeah, neglecting marital duties counts as domestic violence."

"Who says that?" Chen Ningxi wasn’t sure, but she really hadn’t looked into the legal aspects of that.

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Go look it up."

Seeing his confident expression, Chen Ningxi almost believed it was true.

She said, "I’ll check with Baidu."

Cheng Qiaobei chuckled. "You ask Baidu about everything, even check if something’s illegal with Baidu. What, is Baidu more reliable than the courts? The new Criminal Law Amendment took effect on March 1; you should read up on it."

His expression was so convincing that Chen Ningxi almost doubted herself.

She looked at him puzzled, losing confidence in her voice, "... anyway, not twice a day."

Cheng Qiaobei smirked playfully, "What did you say?"

Approaching her office entrance, Chen Ningxi didn’t answer immediately, waiting until she got out of the car, "Anyway, not twice a day."

After speaking, she closed the car door with a thud and jogged into the office.

Cheng Qiaobei watched her retreating figure, the smile at his eyes and mouth deepening, "You’re really rebellious now!"

He mentioned that online information wasn’t accurate, yet the first thing Chen Ningxi did upon arriving at the office was to order a book on the "New Criminal Law" online.

Initially planning to stop by the supermarket, she received a call from Chairman Yin Yihui.

"Manager Cheng, how’s your rest? Time to come back to work, right?"

Cheng Qiaobei sneered, knowing someone of Yin Yihui’s status was aware of his current marginalized situation.

"Thanks for your concern, Chairman Yin. After two busy months, I’m quite exhausted."

He played it cool as if Yin Yihui’s effort was wasted.

Unwilling to beat around the bush, Yin Yihui asked Cheng Qiaobei, "Can we meet?"

Knowing Yin Yihui well, even if he declined today, he’d find another way for them to meet again.

So, being proactive was better than passive.

"It’s convenient."

Yin Yihui said, "The Golden Goblet."

"What time?"

"11:30 in the morning. How about chatting over lunch?"

Cheng Qiaobei agreed readily, "No problem."

After hanging up, Cheng Qiaobei called Wei Lai, "Send me the documents you organized yesterday."

Wei Lai said, "Sure."

Cheng Qiaobei didn’t go home and drove straight to Lin Hanrui’s company.

As soon as he got out of the car, a black sedan parked not far from him.

Cheng Qiaobei casually looked over, and the person in the car seemed aware, starting the engine and turning onto another road.

"Heh..." Cheng Qiaobei scoffed, glancing disdainfully at the departing sedan.

Walking directly into Lin Hanrui’s office, he was drawing. Upon seeing Cheng, he didn’t put down his work.

Lin Hanrui said, "Here this early today?"

Cheng Qiaobei sat by the window, eyes fixed on the traffic outside.

"Yeah, dropped my wife off at work." His mind wasn’t on chatting with Lin, but focused on locating that black sedan.

If he remembered correctly, the car had been tailing him since leaving home.

Lin Hanrui, head down, said, "Every day I see you, you can’t stop mentioning your wife. What, rented, and you feel uncomfortable not bringing her up?"

Cheng Qiaobei replied nonchalantly, "Uncomfortable. Maybe you let me feel uncomfortable too, why don’t you get married."

Lin Hanrui possessed the humor typical of Northern men, "Ah, you rented a wife and dragged me along. Do wives come issued by the state or are they exchanged for phone credit? You decide to marry just like that?"

With one light sentence, Cheng Qiaobei could leave Lin Hanrui speechless.

"If you don’t have the right skills, even if they give you one, you can’t keep her."

"Tsk... you..." Lin Hanrui said, "You underestimate people!"

Cheng Qiaobei noticed the black sedan circled around, stopped at an inconspicuous spot near the company entrance.

"Then who would want to marry you?" Cheng Qiaobei asked, shifting his attention back inward with a smirk.

Lin Hanrui opened his mouth, "... You’re a liar."

"How did I lie to you? You said my wife was rented, I suggested you rent one too, and you backed out. Clearly, you’re like soft iron, not enough to forge. Skills lacking, you should practice more."

Cheng Qiaobei pressed the button to boil water at the tea bar, adding tea leaves to the pot, waiting for it to brew.

Lin Hanrui’s mind was on drafting problems, struggling to keep up with Cheng’s logic.

"I... wait," Lin Hanrui set his work aside, "It’s early, and you’re acting like you’re on fire, pouring it all on me. Are you unsatisfied, or did your wife throw you out of the room?"

"..." Cheng Qiaobei recalled Chen Ningxi’s words about sleeping in the guest room.

Lin Hanrui seized the chance, grinning widely, "Ha ha ha... your silence is deafening."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "No, how could she possibly kick me out."

Lin Hanrui said, "Then why did you just act like I took your wife away, almost ready to devour me?"

They idly chatted away, Cheng playing a game on the sofa, Lin quietly drawing.

As it neared 11, Cheng asked, "Where does the company’s back door lead?"

Lin Hanrui said, "The back door opens to Jinshui Street."

Cheng extended his hand, "Lend me your car keys."

"What for?" Lin asked while retrieving the keys from the drawer and tossing them.

Catching them, Cheng asked, "How much fuel is left?"

Lin Hanrui said, "Enough for ten kilometers at least."

Cheng Qiaobei sighed, black lines forming across his forehead, "Loan me your car for the day. I’ll return it with a full tank."

Lin Hanrui’s eyes formed a crescent with his smile, "You’re generous, Cheng."

The tea had already boiled. Without waiting to drink, Cheng left through the company’s back entrance in Lin Hanrui’s Cayenne.

As he started the car, Cheng checked the fuel gauge; it was nearly empty.

Ten kilometers? What an exaggeration!

Cheng Qiaobei filled up the tank and drove straight to the Golden Goblet.
