Chapter 155: Chapter 155: An Unexpected Mouthful of Dog Food
Jiang Wanyi was jolted awake by a bout of strong turbulence. As soon as her senses returned, she looked at Cheng Qiaobei in fear. He had a serious expression, "It’s okay, it’s just strong turbulence."
Before she could react, another strong jolt hit.
The cabin was in a state of panic. Flight attendants remained calm and immediately tried to reassure everyone over the intercom, but the turbulence was so violent that it felt like everyone was being tossed into the air. The extreme physical discomfort escalated into fear for many, with some screaming, others crying, and items falling from the overhead compartments.
The flight attendants loudly reminded everyone over the intercom to lower their bodies and cover their heads. Jiang Wanyi froze until Cheng Qiaobei wrapped his large hand around the back of her head and pushed it down.
"What are you stunned for? Duck down!"
The plane rose and fell sharply, her stomach churning. Jiang Wanyi couldn’t even begin to imagine what might happen next. Her heart pounded wildly. If only time could stop and she could go back, she wouldn’t have taken this flight.
She reached out to grip Cheng Qiaobei’s arm. If anything really happened, having his companionship brought her solace.
After more than ten minutes of turbulence, the plane finally exited the turbulent region. The sense of surviving a disaster brought joy to everyone’s faces, but Jiang Wanyi leaned back against the seat, exhausted and silent.
Cheng Qiaobei, thinking she was still in shock, said, "It’s all over, don’t worry."
Her eyes finally moved as she turned to look at Cheng Qiaobei, "Aren’t you scared?"
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "A little bit."
Jiang Wanyi hurried to tidy her hair and asked, "What were you thinking just now?"
Cheng Qiaobei answered without hesitation, "Thinking about my wife."
"Ha..." Jiang Wanyi laughed, "Caught off guard with a dose of PDA."
Cheng Qiaobei took out her lunch, "Yours."
After that thrilling episode, Jiang Wanyi had lost her appetite. She took it and said, "Thank you."
She asked a flight attendant for a glass of hot water to take medicine. Cheng Qiaobei said, "You’re taking medicine on an empty stomach?"
Jiang Wanyi: "No appetite."
Thinking he would soothe her with some considerate words, he simply said, "Then forget it."
Jiang Wanyi: "..."
Watching him take out noise-canceling earbuds to rest, Jiang Wanyi said, "We just went through a near-disaster together, and you’re not even trying to persuade me?"
Cheng Qiaobei looked at her calmly, his eyes sincere, "You said you had no appetite."
So, what right do I have to interfere?
"...," left her feeling rather deflated.
Cheng Qiaobei: "Any other issues? If not, I want to rest."
Jiang Wanyi shook her head, "No."
Cheng Qiaobei put in his earbuds and adjusted the seat angle, while Jiang Wanyi next to him finally understood how those girls he used to ignore felt.
The plane landed at Kennedy Airport. Cheng Qiaobei picked up his luggage and headed outside the terminal, spotting Jiang Wanyi standing by the roadside waiting for a cab, with two large suitcases beside her.
Cheng Qiaobei walked over, "How are you getting back?"
Jiang Wanyi said, "Taking a cab."
Cheng Qiaobei: "Don’t. The company is sending a car for me, I’ll drop you off on the way."
He lifted another suitcase and walked towards the pickup area. Jiang Wanyi followed closely, thanking him as they walked.
"Thank you."
After loading the luggage into the trunk, Cheng Qiaobei got into the front passenger seat.
Jiang Wanyi currently lived in Brooklyn City Center, about a fifteen-minute walk from her office. Cheng Qiaobei instructed the driver to drop her off first.
The car stopped in front of her apartment building, and Cheng Qiaobei unloaded the two suitcases from the car. Jiang Wanyi said, "You must be tired too. I won’t invite you up for coffee today, but I’ll treat you to a meal sometime."
It was just small talk, Cheng Qiaobei didn’t take it to heart, "Alright, see you."
Jiang Wanyi watched the car drive away before dragging her bags inside.
After leaving her previous job in another city, she had lived in New York for two years. In those two years, aside from work-related socializing, she hardly had any friends. When she fell ill, there was no one to call to bring her medicine. Her current assistant, Lin Shuxing, had only been with her for less than three months, and while they worked seamlessly together, they rarely disturbed each other outside of work.
So, when Cheng Qiaobei offered to take her home today, Jiang Wanyi was very grateful to him.
As for her family back home, they did not understand the hardships of a woman floating overseas. They only knew she had a decent job and a good salary, but in a city like New York, the other side of high income was an increase in living costs, where various taxes needed to be paid. Jiang Wanyi found it rather challenging.
Cheng Qiaobei’s hotel was not far from Jiang Wanyi’s apartment, about a block away. He arrived at the hotel around nine in the evening, which was around ten in the morning back home.
After taking a shower, he leaned back on the couch and sent a message to Chen Ningxi.
north: I arrived.
About five minutes later, he received a reply from Chen Ningxi.
Chen Ningxi: Must have been exhausting.
north: Not too bad, I’m used to it. Are you busy?
Chen Ningxi: Not busy, just finished checking work.
The next second, Cheng Qiaobei’s video call request came through, and Chen Ningxi accepted it.
In the video, Chen Ningxi was in work clothes, wearing a small yellow hat, looking weary. The background subtly hummed with the sound of machinery.
Cheng Qiaobei smiled at the person in the video. Chen Ningxi asked, "What are you smiling at?"
He pointed to his face, "You’ve got dirt here."
"Really?" Chen Ningxi rubbed with the back of her hand, spreading the gray mark over half her face, "Hang on."
Chen Ningxi took a wet wipe from her pocket and carefully wiped her face in front of the camera. Cheng Qiaobei just watched her face quietly, missing her more and more the longer he looked.
"Wife."
"Mm."
Chen Ningxi was focused on wiping her face, completely ignoring the longing in Cheng Qiaobei’s eyes.
She even asked, "Help me see, is it clean now?"
Cheng Qiaobei rubbed the screen with his thumb, "It’s clean."
Chen Ningxi smiled broadly at the person on the other end of the video, "You’ve been on a plane for so long, aren’t you going to rest?"
Cheng Qiaobei felt a pang of frustration, "The first thing I did after landing at the hotel was to video call you, and now you’re urging me to sleep. You really don’t miss me at all."
"I’m just worried about you being tired," Chen Ningxi finally detected a hint of playful jealousy. "You’re tired, I feel sorry for you."
"That’s a bit better." Cheng Qiaobei lifted one corner of his mouth into a smile, feeling quite pleased, "Being home alone must be lonely, right? Without my company, doesn’t it feel empty and cold? Especially at night when everything’s silent, lying under the covers alone with no one to talk to, remembering my warm embrace, broad shoulders, makes you lose sleep night after night."
"Do you really have to make me sound so fragile?" Chen Ningxi laughed.
Cheng Qiaobei narrowed his eyes, the arc of his long, slender eyes curving charmingly. Fresh from a shower, his long lashes held onto beads of moisture, making his gaze particularly deep and alluring.
Cheng Qiaobei asked, "Isn’t that the case?"
Knowing what he wanted to hear, Chen Ningxi obliged playfully, "Right, right, you’re right."
Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow, "What kind of tone is that, unwilling? I just left and you already don’t miss me? Chen Ningxi, don’t forget, I’m overseas, with plenty of birds waiting to land in my forest."
