Chapter 142: Chapter 142 Shameless People

During lunch break, Chen Ningxi went to the cafeteria to eat. The Party Secretary, Lei Dechang, and Deputy Party Secretary, Qiu Zhitong, were sitting at one table. When they saw Chen Ningxi coming over with her tray, one of them moved aside and called her over.

Lei Dechang said to Chen Ningxi, "I was just telling Old Qiu that you’re getting married the day after tomorrow. Has everything at home been taken care of?"

"It’s all done." After saying this, Chen Ningxi picked up some green beans and put them in her mouth.

Qiu Zhitong said, "My son happens to be off this weekend. He can provide a car for your wedding; it’s not a great car, just a Cayenne."

Chen Ningxi couldn’t refuse her colleague’s kindness. "Thank you, Mr. Qiu."

Wedding car drivers usually receive a red envelope, but Qiu Zhitong was genuinely helping and not doing it for money.

"Your wedding happens to be on a weekend, so most of our unit can attend. This time you’ll have no escape. We’ll have a couple of drinks at Manager Cheng’s happy occasion," Lei Dechang said to Qiu Zhitong.

Qiu Zhitong laughed, "No problem."

Lei Dechang said, "By the way, I watched Danjiang news this morning. On your wedding day, the first wind turbine of the Donggou Wind Power Project will be completed. Isn’t that a coincidence? Wouldn’t you say it’s an auspicious day?"

"It really is," Qiu Zhitong chimed in. "There are quite a few weddings that day; I’ve received several invitations for that day."

Lei Dechang assumed he was trying to find an excuse to avoid the party. "You have to be there that day, no excuses."

Qiu Zhitong said, "Don’t worry, I might send a gift for others, but for Manager Chen, I’ll definitely be there in person."

"Chen," Lei Dechang asked, "how are your in-laws? Easy to get along with?"

Chen Ningxi smiled, "Yes, they’re easy to get along with, all very agreeable."

"That’s great. Unlike my daughter’s in-laws, who are notoriously difficult in the power plant area. Unlucky for my family," Lei Dechang said with a headache.

Chen Ningxi had heard about it. After all, everyone in the old power plant area knew about it, and everyone was aware of each other’s family situations.

But when it came to other people’s business, Chen Ningxi was not one to comment much, just smiling and letting the subject pass.

The three of them talked about work-related matters for a bit longer. Chen Ningxi finished eating first, picked up her tray, and nodded to the two before leaving.

Just as she turned onto the stairs, she saw a man standing at the office door with his back to her. Chen Ningxi couldn’t make out who it was.

Hearing footsteps in the hallway, the man turned around, and Chen Ningxi stopped abruptly. "Why are you here?"

Guo Heming, in a sharp suit with his chin slightly raised, looked at her with an air of arrogance, as if the last incident hadn’t taught him a lesson.

"I’m here to discuss some business," he said.

"Come in," Chen Ningxi said, taking out a key to open the door.

Guo Heming followed her into the office and saw the nameplate on the desk. "You’ve been promoted, congratulations."

Leaning against her chair back, Chen Ningxi found his insincere congratulation irritating to her ears.

"Go ahead, say what you need to say."

Guo Heming pulled out a chair, just about to sit down, when he noticed the invitation on the desk. "You’re getting married?"

Chen Ningxi looked straight at him. "Yes."

"When?" Guo Heming asked.

She thought it was nauseating that he asked. No way would she invite him to her wedding. What a pointless question.

"What exactly is your business?" She answered with a question instead.

Guo Heming smiled. "Still holding a grudge? I’m honestly happy about your marriage. Tell me the date, and I’ll witness your moment of happiness."

Chen Ningxi said, "If you want to talk business, I can use my break to listen to you. But if it’s personal, the door is there."

Scram! Roll into a ball and roll far away!

If he had been anyone else, he would have been mortified and left long ago. But Guo Heming had encountered people much harsher and more unpleasant than Chen Ningxi, so her words were nothing to him and didn’t affect his dignity at all.

Some would call it strong resilience; others would call it thick-skinned.

Guo Heming said, "Fine, my goodwill’s just being taken as a joke."

A slight frown appeared on Chen Ningxi’s brow. Seeing someone as shameless as Guo Heming was quite an eye-opener.

Guo Heming took out a few photos. "These are pictures of my client’s house. Do you see that power line above?"

Chen Ningxi took the photos—ten in total—and, flipping through them, saw close-up shots of the power line as it related to the house from various angles.

Putting the photos down, Guo Heming said, "The power line severely affects my client’s daily life, and now their demand is for the power line immediately to be removed from above their home."

Chen Ningxi remembered this project from last year, which had been discussed in meetings and researched on-site with no safety hazards present.

"This cable was approved through departmental processes, compliant and legal."

"You get your approvals but disregard people’s well-being? Who wouldn’t feel anxious with a power line above their head every day?" Guo Heming replied.

Chen Ningxi said, "This cable isn’t a high-voltage line."

Guo Heming paused briefly, "...Whether it’s high-voltage or not, my client demands the line be removed." Then he switched tactics, "If it’s not removed, we’ll be discussing compensation."

Chen Ningxi said, "When we designed and installed the power line, compensation was already issued."

Guo Heming replied, "That was land compensation. My client is now seeking compensation for lifestyle and emotional impacts."

Chen Ningxi didn’t respond immediately. While she was aware of the project, someone else managed its execution, so she needed to fully understand the problem to address it.

"I’m aware of the issue you’ve raised. I’ll have a colleague get back to you."

Guo Heming placed a business card on Chen Ningxi’s desk. "Make it quick. My client doesn’t have much patience. Imagine if they decide to create a scene at your wedding—how inauspicious would that be?"

Seeing the sinister smile on his lips, Chen Ningxi really wanted to slap him hard.

"Guo Heming, you should thank our harmonious society for saving you," Chen Ningxi said, using the calmest tone to express the firmest words. "If a few words from you could intimidate me, I wouldn’t be fit to be a manager."

Thinking back to their previous confrontations, Guo Heming knew he wouldn’t gain the upper hand, and Chen Ningxi wouldn’t take it lying down.

He looked away, picked up his briefcase, and asked, "How soon can I expect your response?"

Chen Ningxi said, "Within three days."

"That long?" Guo Heming realized something, "Are you getting married this weekend?"

Chen Ningxi calmly stood up, "Guo Heming, do I give you the impression of being so easy to bully?"

"Don’t be mad, I was just guessing," Guo Heming said, looking her up and down. "Congratulations on your wedding, and may you quickly have a child."

His look was offensively suggestive, and Chen Ningxi’s face darkened. She picked up her phone and dialed a number, "Dong, please have the security officer come up."

"I’m leaving, no need to call security." Guo Heming laughed awkwardly as he walked toward the door.

Angry, Chen Ningxi clenched her fist as she heard the hurried footsteps in the hallway. The next moment, the security officer began questioning Guo Heming and escorted him out.

After calming her emotions, Chen Ningxi dialed Cheng Qiaobei’s number, "I’ll leave work early today so we can go to Ningkou to pick up Mom."

Cheng Qiaobei was sitting on the couch, a laptop on his lap displaying materials about overseas hotels.

"Sure, what time should I pick you up?"

Chen Ningxi looked at her watch, "In an hour."
