Chapter 133: Chapter 133: Elite Hunters Always Emerge as the Prey Appears
Xu Yunheng diligently poured tea for Cheng Xiangheng, chatting about the company like they were just talking about family matters.
"Qiao Bei, this kid is really coming into his own, has a good head on his shoulders and management skills. Like with the overseas hotel thing, he managed to coordinate and manage various resources effectively in a short amount of time amidst a complex environment. Just based on this, he’s definitely got the makings of a leader. What’s the old saying? Like father, like son. His leadership and organizational skills are no less impressive than yours back in the day. If you ask me, he’s even better than you were.
His team members are all exceptional, and they’re all extremely loyal to him.
I don’t know what others think, but as for me, when it comes to the overseas hotel being handed over to him, I’m completely convinced. It’s still you, old brother, who has the foresight. If Qiao Bei keeps developing like this, there won’t be any problem handing over the whole group to him, and you can retire in peace.
Isn’t Siluo about to give birth? You and your wife better enjoy the good life."
If Xu Yunheng said all this without any ulterior motive, Cheng Xiangheng would never believe it. But indeed, Cheng Qiaobei’s recent achievements had significantly raised his influence in the company.
The hawk raised by the hunter turns around to peck the hunter’s eyes—it was something to be cautious about.
Cheng Xiangheng’s dark eyes were deep and inscrutable as he looked at the person across from him, his expression cold as ice, making Xu Yunheng’s heart uneasy. Xu’s smile twitched, "Old Cheng, I didn’t mean anything by it. We’ve been friends all these years. I’m happy for you that your son is doing well."
Cheng Xiangheng dismissively diverted his gaze and splashed Xu Yunheng with the tea he poured. Xu didn’t dare make a sound, realizing that his earlier words had angered Cheng Xiangheng.
The teacup was set down with a not-too-heavy impact, as Cheng Xiangheng coldly stated,
"It’s cold."
Xu Yunheng hurried to say, "The tea in the pot isn’t cold."
As he was about to lift the teapot, Cheng Xiangheng took it first, watching Xu Yunheng quietly. The latter immediately understood, bowing low with both hands cradling the teacup.
Tea flowed down the edge of the cup, and even as it nearly overflowed and scalded his hands, he didn’t stop.
With a pained expression and trembling hands, Xu Yunheng dared not put it down and had to endure while listening to Cheng Xiangheng leisurely say,
"In navigating the sea, the helmsman is always on the highest point of the ship. No matter how hard the sailors work below, they have to follow the top’s instructions."
Xu Yunheng gritted his teeth, a deep crease forming between his brows as he nodded with a tremor.
"And," as the teapot was empty, he set it down, "keep your nose out of my family’s matters."
"Old Cheng, you wrong me! How am I meddling? What you said is hurtful to a brother," Xu Yunheng shook his head, feeling unfairly wronged.
Cheng Xiangheng remained unmoved, "Is that so? If you’re really hurt, just suck it up."
Xu Yunheng bottled up his rage.
Cheng Xiangheng took the teacup from his hand, and sipped lightly, "If there’s nothing else, you can leave."
Xu Yunheng struggled to his feet, his hand hanging by his side slightly bent from the pain, unable to move further.
"Mr. Cheng, I won’t keep you any longer. I’ll be off."
Only after the office door closed, Cheng Xiangheng’s face turned grim, his gaze unfathomable and mysterious like a black hole.
Xu Yunheng’s words couldn’t be trusted, but they did remind Cheng Xiangheng that the hawk should be reeled in a bit.
Returning to his desk, he picked up another report and flipped it open...
As the wedding date approached, it felt like the needed preparations and shopping were endless. Not only was Chen Ningxi busy, but Ye Yujun also had her hands full. Chen Ningxi took advantage of the time after work to deliver invitations to friends and family. She spent three days notifying everyone in the group chat before finally getting it all done.
After work, Chen Ningxi really didn’t feel like cooking at home, so she called Liang Lei to see if she wanted to eat out.
The restaurant was just a small place near their house. The environment was nothing special, but the prices were reasonable, the portions were large, and the food was delightfully tasty.
Living nearby, Chen Ningxi arrived first and found a table, then used WeChat to ask Liang Lei what she wanted to eat. She, as usual, wanted sweet and sour pork and fish-flavored eggplant, leaving one dish for Chen Ningxi to decide. Northern cuisine had so many delicious options that choosing was easy. Finally, Chen Ningxi ordered a plate of the restaurant’s specialty, saucy large bone.
She opened two bottles of Hongbao Lai Peanut Milk, and just as Chen Ningxi took a sip, Cheng Qiaobei called.
"Did you just get off work?" Cheng Qiaobei asked.
"Just finished, I called Liang Lei out for dinner. How about you? Are you done?"
Cheng Qiaobei said, "Finished. Where are you eating?"
Chen Ningxi gave the address, "Chunmei Pickles Restaurant."
"Is that the place with the saucy large bone you ordered last time?"
"You remember? It’s good, right?"
"Yeah, tastes nice."
Because it was so good, Cheng Qiaobei had bought another to take back to the hotel for the chef to try. They attempted to recreate it, but there were still differences in taste.
After all, it was an old shop with more than twenty years of history and had its unique sauce recipe.
"Did you call for something?" Chen Ningxi asked.
Cheng Qiaobei chuckled, "The way you say that, it’s like I can’t call you without a reason."
"Oh, you’re being coy," Chen Ningxi teased. "If you miss me, just say you miss me. Don’t be embarrassed; men should be more forthright."
Cheng Qiaobei laughed so hard his shoulders trembled. "You’re right, I miss you. When are you coming home?"
Chen Ningxi replied, "I just got to the restaurant, and Liang Lei hasn’t arrived yet. We’ve just ordered food."
"Alright then, you and Liang can have your girls’ night and leave your husband on the side. That’s bold enough, isn’t it?" Cheng Qiaobei lied back on the sofa, hand over his forehead, fatigue evident on his face.
Liang Lei walked in from outside and headed straight to Chen Ningxi when she saw her, sitting in the chair opposite her. "Talking to the hubby again?"
Chen Ningxi smiled, not denying it. Liang Lei spoke into the phone, "Manager Cheng, I’ll borrow Ning Xi for a while. I’ll return her after the meal."
Cheng Qiaobei laughed, "Okay, I won’t interrupt your meal."
Chen Ningxi said, "I’ll call you when I get home."
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "Alright."
No sooner had they hung up than the server arrived with their dishes.
The two chatted while eating. Chen Ningxi noticed that Liang Lei’s smile while checking her WeChat was excessively sweet, a clear sign something was up.
"Seeing someone?"
Liang Lei lifted her gaze from her phone, looking across at her friend. "Sort of."
Biting into the sweet and sour pork, crispy on the outside and tender within, Chen Ningxi pondered while chewing, "Sort of? Is it or isn’t it?"
After replying to a message, Liang Lei put her phone down, "It is. You know him too."
Racking her brain through everyone she could think of, Chen Ningxi couldn’t pinpoint who it was.
"Who?"
Liang Lei said, "Lin Hanrui."
"Who?" Chen Ningxi’s eyes widened, almost dropping the eggplant from her chopsticks.
Liang Lei picked up a big bone and placed it on her plate, biting off a piece of meat, "We’ve been in touch privately, so of course you don’t know."
Recalling something, realization dawned on Chen Ningxi, "You guys weren’t... from that time in Chu’an?"
Liang Lei nodded while chewing, "Yeah."
Chen Ningxi asked, "Who made the first move?"
Liang Lei replied, "On May 20th, last month, there was a national competition at the Danjiang Bird Gliding Paragliding Base. He bet me that if he made the top three, I’d agree to one thing he’d ask."
"What place did he get?" Chen Ningxi asked.
Liang Lei held up two fingers.
Chen Ningxi said, "Second? Impressive. So, what he wanted was for you to be his girlfriend?"
Liang Lei nodded, "Uh-huh."
Knowing Liang Lei well, if she had no interest, she wouldn’t have agreed even if Lin Hanrui had taken first place.
"Were you into him long before?"
Liang Lei squinted and smiled, "Haven’t you heard... a high-level hunter always appears as prey."
Chen Ningxi gave a thumbs-up, "I’m impressed."
