Chapter 130: Chapter 130: With Me Here, You Can Rest Assured

Chen Ningxi looked at Cheng Qiaobei; his gaze had already indicated that the person was Jiang Wanyi.

"Let’s go." Cheng Qiaobei gently supported her back.

At the office door, Cheng Qiaobei introduced, "Manager Jiang, this is my wife. Did you need something from me?"

"Yeah, there was a data error in the earlier information, and subsequent sections will need adjustments." Jiang Wanyi greeted Chen Ningxi, "Hello."

Chen Ningxi responded generously, "Hello."

Cheng Qiaobei opened the door and gestured for Chen Ningxi to go in first, "You sit on the sofa and wait for me," then said to Jiang Wanyi, "Which page? I’ll mark it down."

Jiang Wanyi followed him to the desk, pulled out the chair opposite him, and sat down, flipping open the thick materials, "Page three hundred seventy-five, fourth paragraph."

The office was quiet; his long fingers flipped through the page corners, and the paper rustled quietly in the air.

Jiang Wanyi spoke fluent English throughout the explanation, and Cheng Qiaobei listened attentively, taking continuous notes on important points and occasionally asking questions, which Jiang Wanyi answered immediately.

At work, the two were evenly matched, without any mingling of personal feelings. Privately, if Cheng Qiaobei hadn’t returned to China back then, their ending would undoubtedly have been a happy one.

Chen Ningxi could understand their conversation, but some of the professional jargon was a bit beyond her grasp.

An hour later, Jiang Wanyi closed the materials and, exhausted, rubbed her neck, "Thanks for your hard work."

She stood up to leave, but suddenly her vision went black, and she stumbled forward. Cheng Qiaobei instinctively stood up, and Chen Ningxi was also startled, quickly stepping forward to support her, "Are you okay?"

Jiang Wanyi propped herself on the table edge, slowly reopened her eyes, smiled at Chen Ningxi, and thanked her, "Thank you, I’m okay."

Cheng Qiaobei walked over, noticing she didn’t look well, "Did you stay up all night again?"

Jiang Wanyi said, "The company places a lot of importance on this project. We have to send the meeting content and progress back before the morning meeting every day. We have no choice but to stay up late."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "I’ll have Wei Lai help you back to rest."

"No need to trouble yourself. I can manage on my own." Jiang Wanyi left Cheng Qiaobei’s office with the materials.

As the office door closed, Chen Ningxi withdrew her gaze and said, "She works really hard."

Cheng Qiaobei nodded, "She’s always been this way, even during school."

Suddenly realizing he misspoke, Cheng Qiaobei awkwardly said to Chen Ningxi, "I didn’t mean anything else."

Chen Ningxi replied with a relaxed tone, "I also didn’t mean anything else. Don’t be nervous. I genuinely admire her work ethic."

Cheng Qiaobei quickly opened the insulated bag and took out the lunchbox, "You even brought chopsticks for me. Mom is really good to me. Tell her it’s the best braised beef I’ve ever had."

Chen Ningxi said, "Don’t just eat the beef; have some rice."

In the afternoon, Cheng Qiaobei had a video meeting with Cheng Xiangheng. There was no father-son atmosphere between them; it was strictly a superior-subordinate relationship, discussing overseas hotels and financial companies the entire time. Chen Ningxi sat on the sofa, listening until she fell asleep, and when she woke up, it was dark outside. A jacket draped over her, but Cheng Qiaobei wasn’t in the office.

She hung the jacket on the coat rack and went to the desk, which was piled with various documents. Among them was the one he and Jiang Wanyi had checked, densely annotated. Cheng Qiaobei’s handwriting was beautiful and flowing, just like the impression he gave.

The door opened behind her, and Chen Ningxi turned to see Wei Lai walk in, her eyes smiling with dimples, radiating a comforting familiarity.

Cheng Qiaobei had seen Wei Lai during their video call; they had greeted each other through the screen.

"Awake?" Wei Lai said with a smile.

Chen Ningxi replied, "Yeah, just woke up. Where is he?"

Wei Lai said, "Manager Cheng went to meet a client. He’ll be back soon. He asked me to check if you were awake and to ask if you want something to eat. I’ll have the kitchen prepare it."

Chen Ningxi said, "I’m not very hungry yet; I’ll decide when he gets back."

Wei Lai poured a cup of hot tea and placed it on the table, "Please enjoy some tea."

"Thank you." Chen Ningxi looked at the full table of materials, "Is he always this busy?"

Wei Lai said, "Yes, Zhoushan is the largest project in the last three years, so Manager Cheng is very hands-on with many things. Now the head office has also given him the overseas hotels to handle, so the workload is definitely not small. This past week, Manager Cheng has been busy with overseas hotel matters, either in the office or the conference room, working with a group of people. Sometimes, he’s so busy he doesn’t even get to eat."

Chen Ningxi sensed the implication in Wei Lai’s words, that she was worried she might read too much into it, subtly suggesting that Cheng Qiaobei hadn’t been alone with Jiang Wanyi.

"You also work hard. I know he’s busy, so I didn’t want to disturb him, but my mom made braised beef and felt for her son-in-law, so she asked me to bring it to him."

The look in Chen Ningxi’s eyes conveyed words she could read, and since they were both smart people, she didn’t need to worry.

"I heard Manager Cheng mention that your family treats him really well. You don’t know how he looked at the time; it was the first time I saw pink bubbles of happiness in a man’s eyes." Wei Lai pursed her lips, "You won’t tell him, right?"

Chen Ningxi smiled pleasantly, "Of course not. With you by his side, I’m very reassured."

Wei Lai understood, "That’s right; with me here, you can rest assured."

Some things were better left unsaid.

Footsteps were heard outside the door, and Wei Lai turned back, saying, "They must’ve finished talking."

Just as the words left her mouth, Cheng Qiaobei walked into the office, seeing the two of them with smiles on their faces. "What are you two chatting about?"

Chen Ningxi said, "It’s a secret; can’t tell you."

Wei Lai’s smile deepened, with an air of unspeakable mystery.

"Hey, something’s not right. You must be talking about me. Wei Lai," Cheng Qiaobei looked at Wei Lai, "What did you say? Are you complaining about me?"

"Absolutely not." Wei Lai quickly retreated from the office, "You two chat; I’ll go check on the kitchen."

Cheng Qiaobei walked over to Chen Ningxi, naturally wrapping his arms around her waist. With a gentle lift, she was drawn close.

He lowered his eyes slightly, his long eyelashes casting a shadow full of deep affection, "What were you chatting about? Can I know?"

Chen Ningxi leaned back, her hand resting on his chest, "We were talking about how you’re always busy with work, being very honest."

"Ah, exactly, that’s what my secretary should say." Cheng Qiaobei smirked, one side of his mouth curling up mischievously, "She deserves a raise."

Chen Ningxi lightly tapped his chest, "Trying to get away with things?"

Cheng Qiaobei kissed her on the lips, making a soft smack, "Want to deal with me, wait till tonight."

Chen Ningxi used her index finger to lift his chin, her eyes sultry, "Then you better perform well and not disappoint me."

Love had no direction—wherever you were, my love would be there.
