Chapter 127: Chapter 127: No Wild Guesses

Cheng Qiaobei adjusted his mood, answering with a hint of a smile, "Hey, wife."

"The dress shop called, asking us to come by when we have time to try on the clothes."

Last time they tried the outfits, there were details that didn’t fit well, so after some alterations, they needed to try them on again.

Cheng Qiaobei still had a meeting in the afternoon, "What time does the dress shop close in the evening?"

Chen Ningxi said, "Seven-thirty."

"Okay, I’ll stop by tonight."

...

Cheng Qiaobei walked out of the elevator and ran into Jiang Wanyi coming back from outside in the lobby. She was dressed in a cream-colored casual outfit, looking refreshingly clean, much like she did in college.

Seeing Cheng Qiaobei in a hurry, Jiang Wanyi greeted him.

"Are you going out?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Going back to Danjiang."

As they passed by each other, Jiang Wanyi suddenly called out to him, "Manager Cheng."

"!" Cheng Qiaobei stopped. Jiang Wanyi came over, "Are you coming back tonight?"

Cheng Qiaobei didn’t answer immediately, "What’s up?"

Jiang Wanyi said, "Could you bring me some stomach medicine from the pharmacy? I asked around a few nearby pharmacies and they didn’t have the kind I need."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Sure."

Jiang Wanyi said, "I’ll send you the name of the medicine in WeChat."

They had already re-added each other on WeChat. Cheng Qiaobei, eager to get back, said, "Okay."

After he walked out the main door, Jiang Wanyi turned around, her gaze lingering on his departing figure, her eyes complex and a bit darker.

Arriving in Danjiang just after seven, Cheng Qiaobei made a call to Chen Ningxi, telling her to come downstairs in ten minutes.

As the car approached, Chen Ningxi was already standing by the roadside from afar.

Once in the car, Chen Ningxi was on work calls all the time. Cheng Qiaobei wanted to bring up Jiang Wanyi’s hotel matter but could not get a word in edgewise because of her constant office calls.

At the store, they started trying on the wedding dresses. After alterations, they fit much better. Admiring Chen Ningxi in the mirror, Cheng Qiaobei smiled tenderly.

He couldn’t help but praise her, "My wife looks so beautiful."

With store clerks nearby, Chen Ningxi pushed his hand, embarrassed, "Keep it down."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "You look great, no need to be modest."

Just looking at this couple, you could tell their affection was off the charts. The store clerk sincerely said, "The bride-to-be is indeed very pretty."

"See, I’m not the only one who thinks so," Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow.

Chen Ningxi lightly brushed her bangs, "Okay, it fits well, let’s get changed."

She pushed Cheng Qiaobei into the dressing room, lowering her voice, "Why haven’t I noticed before, your face is bigger than mine."

Cheng Qiaobei lifted her chin with two fingers, "With a smaller face, how would I marry a wife?"

"Stop it, there’re people outside," Chen Ningxi closed the door and went with the staff to the next changing room to take off the wedding dress.

Since they registered, Cheng Qiaobei almost never returned to his own apartment. The cleaning service came regularly to tidy up and water the plants. He stayed at Chen Ningxi’s place.

While he took a shower, his coat was hung on the door hook. Chen Ningxi smelled the smoke on it and decided to wash it with his other clothes.

Feeling the heaviness in the pocket, she took out car keys and two boxes of stomach medicine. When Cheng Qiaobei finished showering, she was setting the cut fruit on the coffee table and asked,

"Is your stomach hurting?"

Remembering the medicine in his pocket, Cheng Qiaobei said, "...It’s not for me, it’s for someone else."

The word "someone else" sounded slightly ambiguous, yet Chen Ningxi trusted Cheng Qiaobei. He didn’t have many affairs for her to worry about, so she didn’t overthink it.

"Come here."

Cheng Qiaobei pulled her onto his lap. His body was warm from the shower, and he fed her a piece of mango, which she chewed slowly.

He watched her eat with a loving smile in his eyes.

The sweetness of love and the tenderness of a lover touched the soul with every exchange of glances. During these moments, they seemed to be isolated from the world, immersed in the rare tranquility of everyday life.

Just as Chen Ningxi was enjoying her husband’s affection, his following words shifted the mood.

"I need to tell you something, but you must promise not to get mad," he hesitated, "It’s about Jiang Wanyi."

Chen Ningxi’s expression became serious, "...What is it?"

"Promise first, don’t get mad." He reached out his little finger, "Pinky swear."

Chen Ningxi brushed his hand aside, "It’s not that serious, tell me."

Just in case, Cheng Qiaobei gauged her reaction. There was no change when she heard Jiang Wanyi’s name.

He said, "Because of work, I have to meet her often. She is the representative of the collaborating partner, and I’m the project liaison. So phone calls and WeChat are inevitable. I need to re-add the phone number and WeChat that I promised you I’d delete earlier."

He was candid in his explanation, and Chen Ningxi understood.

"Oh, there’s no need to get mad about that. I get it."

Feeling relieved, Cheng Qiaobei mentioned the two boxes of medicine, "Those were for her too."

Chen Ningxi nodded knowingly, "Everyone gets ill sometimes. It’s just picking up some medicine, no big deal."

Communicating with someone emotionally stable was comforting.

Chen Ningxi wrapped her arms around the back of his neck, her gaze sincere, "Are you nervous around me because of her? If so, have I been too reactive before and caused you pressure?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "There’s no pressure. I’m just worried that if you learn how frequently we meet, you’d get mad."

"I don’t have that kind of energy to spare," Chen Ningxi laughed lightly. "There’s trust between us, and I believe in you. As for work, you should communicate without burdens. As long as you have me in your heart, you will naturally keep a certain distance from her, strictly within the work domain. So don’t worry that I’ll overthink or make random guesses."

Cheng Qiaobei quickly fed her a piece of mango, "Still, my wife is the best."

Chen Ningxi laughed while chewing, "Alright, you eat, I’ll go hang the clothes to dry."

She got up and left, and Cheng Qiaobei looked at the fruit platter in front of him. The trust allowed him to feel secure and comfortable in the family relationship, making them more free and genuine in each other’s company.

Because trust was not only an emotion but also an action.

Respect each other’s wishes and choices, without trying to control or interfere. Honestly communicate and share, believing the other person is willing to listen and understand. This mutual trust between lovers was also the most precious aspect of their relationship.

Cheng Qiaobei prepared breakfast to wake Chen Ningxi. She hadn’t woken up yet, so he opened the curtains, letting sunlight spill onto her face. Her fair complexion looked even more translucent under the light. He squatted by the bed and gave her a good morning kiss.

As the air was about to be used up, she made muffled sounds for help, patting Cheng Qiaobei’s back, "Mmm..."

Cheng Qiaobei let go of her with a smile, "Wife, wake up, it’s time."

Chen Ningxi murmured sleepily, "What time is it?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "It’s seven."

"Time to get up."

Chen Ningxi lazily sat up. The phone on the bedside table rang; she recognized the number as Jiang Wanyi’s.

She called out to Cheng Qiaobei, "There’s a call for you, your phone is ringing."

Cheng Qiaobei didn’t hear it from the kitchen, so Chen Ningxi took his phone to the kitchen to find him and handed it over, saying,

"Your call."

Seeing the number, he took it with ease, while Chen Ningxi naturally took the bowl from Cheng Qiaobei’s hands.

Cheng Qiaobei put it on speaker, "Hello."

Jiang Wanyi said, "Did you get the stomach medicine?"

Cheng Qiaobei replied, "Got it."

Jiang Wanyi asked, "Should I pick it up from you or will you bring it to me?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "I stayed home last night. I’ll have the customer service bring it to you once I get to the hotel."

Jiang Wanyi said, "No need to trouble them. Bring it to me at the meeting."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Alright."

After hanging up, Cheng Qiaobei placed a plate of fried fish on the dining table. Chen Ningxi said, "You don’t need to put it on speaker for me to hear. I already said I wouldn’t overthink things."
