"I don’t like people who smoke too much," Jasmine Yale said indifferently.

"Why?" He leaned against the wall with interest, squinting at her.

"They die young."

"..." Sylvan Cheney found himself at a loss for words with that reason.

He curved the corners of his lips slightly, stopped smoking, and silently watched her.

Jasmine bent down and kept to herself.

She wasn’t proficient, having just learned the basics. No matter how she played, she was lousy at it, failing multiple times to pocket a single ball, which was quite disheartening.

She played carelessly to entertain herself, while he watched her.

As she bent her head to ponder angles, she spoke to him in a detached tone, "Aren’t you going out for social engagements tonight?"

"Not going out."

"Do you often play billiards at home?"

"Not really," Sylvan replied.

Before, his way to de-stress was playing billiards, but now it has changed. It’s mostly drinking, smoking.

Not the best methods, but indeed they work fast. Nicotine and alcohol are good at numbing the nerves.

"Why don’t you go out to have fun? You used to play cards with friends and have other social engagements," Jasmine said, not really understanding, just guessing broadly.

"Playing with you is much more interesting than going out."

"Am I that interesting? I find playing with you to be dull."

Sylvan went silent then, just quietly watching her.

Deep, meaningful light filled his profound eyes as he slightly squinted, with an indescribable expression.

Not talking again... Jasmine glanced at him disdainfully out of the corner of her eye.

It was a while before Sylvan stretched his long legs and walked over to her to join the game.

He continued to teach her how to play.

When she pocketed a ball, Jasmine jumped up excitedly, her large eyes brimming with sparkling light!

After playing for a while, she started to feel hot.

"Let’s stop, it’s too hot. I want to go outside."

"Fishing in the backyard?"

"Is it cold? If it’s not cold, then we can go," Jasmine agreed.

The backyard pond was stocked with many different kinds of fish, the water was very clear, and the fish were quite interesting.

The pond was large, and when she was younger, she once went in to catch Sylvan’s prized fish, and later he scolded her.

It wasn’t that he treasured the fish themselves, but rather he forbade her from entering the water again since she was quite bad at swimming.

"It’s not cold, let’s sit on the viewing platform."

"Mhm."

Jasmine had nothing to do anyway, and it was better to be accompanied by him than to be bored alone.

Sylvan passed a fishing rod to Jasmine, telling her to have fun with it.

Wearing a hat, she sat on the viewing platform, fishing and enjoying the scenery.

The sunshine was fine, the light suffused over her small face, making her already fair skin look even whiter and more delicate.

Sylvan didn’t play, simply sitting beside her to keep her company.

Many small fish swam in the pond, of various species and colors, quite beautiful.

The air slowly became quiet.

Jasmine was much better at fishing than playing billiards. In no time, she caught a small goldfish.

It was purely for fun, and after catching it, she put it in a bucket, planning to release it back into the pond later.

However, she hadn’t come to Landon to play, she remembered her purpose.

"Mr. Cheney."

"Hm?"

"When do you plan to let me see my father, or what could I use to bargain with you?"

She knew Sylvan was a businessman, and since he was one, his priority would surely be his interests.

He would never conduct business that was gratuitous and not beneficial.

Sylvan’s expression darkened, genuinely dampening the mood.

"You can’t just ignore me all the time. You need to give me an answer," Jasmine said calmly.

"Don’t you understand what I’m saying?"
