Chapter 925: Chapter 575: Koutao Fishmen

"Koutao Fishmen! It’s actually these amphibious lunatics. Could it be that the Dark Spirit in the Black Prison isn’t one of the existing deities of Felen, but rather a deity created by these madmen themselves?" Serlemon exclaimed.

The most famous trait of the Koutao Fishmen in Felen was their religious zealotry. Every tribe, without exception, was governed by a theocracy, with the top ruler known as the Koutao High Priest.

This characteristic had historical reasons. They were not original natives of Felen, but rather an enslaved race that had been plundered from other worlds during the time when the Mind Flayers ruled the entire world. They had once followed the footsteps of their masters to every corner of the world, be it continents, coastlines, islands, or lakes; they were present in underground rivers as well.

After the collapse of the Mind Flayer Empire, the Koutao Fishmen were abandoned by their masters. However, instead of enjoying the so-called freedom, they could not accept a life without mind control and without their masters assigning them tasks. Many tribes fell directly into collective mental collapse and were afflicted with the mad plague.

This kind of plague was unique to the Koutao Fishmen. Once infected, if it could not be controlled promptly, the entire Koutao Fishmen tribe would collapse due to infighting.

To maintain their shattered spirits, the remaining Koutao Fishmen could only immerse themselves in religious fanaticism.

Immersing in religious fanaticism was not uncommon, after all, the deities truly existed in Felen, and many creatures devoted themselves to religious life, regarding their religious beliefs as a lifelong endeavor.

What was peculiar was that these Koutao Fishmen did not follow the normal notions. They would not worship the multitude of deities above them but instead venerated the powerful beings around them, especially those with the ability to manipulate minds, such as powerful Mind Flayers or Abyssal Mawfish.

If no such beings were around, they would worship deities of their own creation. The deities of the Koutao Fishmen were full of absurdity and randomness.

Take the most widespread and revered Mother of the Sea, Brivo Dup, in the Koutao Fishmen community, for example. She was a human female with a head and claws like a small lobster, draped in seashells.

Brivo Dup’s original image came from a human statue repaired by the Koutao Fishmen with various shells. The statue they repaired based on their conjectures was so perfect that it convinced countless Koutao Fishmen. They revered it as a deity, and thus a deity was born.

The key was that the Divine Laws of the Multiverse decreed that if these faithful were devout enough and in sufficient numbers, they would indeed create a corresponding deity with the ability to manifest powers.

Once the Koutao Fishmen’s shattered yet simplistic hearts believed in something, that belief would be extremely pure and sincere, wholeheartedly devoted, resulting in a tribal culture where often, every Koutao Fishmen tribe had its own unique deity. Once the Koutao Fishmen tribe perished, the god would naturally perish as well, hence the race was also crowned the name of god-makers.

Of course, aside from entities like Brivo Dup, who was widely revered amongst the Koutao Fishmen and could enter the ranks of the true gods.

Those deities that clung to various Koutao Fishmen tribes were nothing more than false gods, much like the ancestral spirits and guardian spirits of humans. Usually, human ancestral spirits and guardian spirits were entities that had once truly existed, and after death, due to belief, transformed into ancestral spirits or guardian spirits. The Koutao Fishmen’s deities, however, were purely self-fabricated out of nothing.

"If the Koutao Fishmen tribe beneath the Black Prison is large enough, it’s not an impossibility," Laurantice clearly also thought of the racial traits of the Koutao Fishmen and linked them with the current situation of the Black Prison.

The evil deity in the Black Prison, whose origins were completely unclear, could be one created by these Koutao Fishmen, or possibly linked to existing deities but twisted by them.

Moreover, the situation where those who stayed around the Black Prison for too long fell into a state of madness was very similar to the Koutao Fishmen’s mad plague. The only thing that was somewhat inconsistent was that this mad plague was a spiritual epidemic, which could only spread among Koutao Fishmen and was not contagious to other creatures, unless mutations had arisen or there was a problem with the deities they worshipped.

The reason why no one had previously thought this way was that they had not obtained any evidence indicating that a bunch of Koutao Fishmen lived beneath the Black Prison.

Let’s not even mention the years when river water flowed into the Black Prison; these Koutao Fishmen did not swim upstream, not even for most of this year. Everything started when that never-before-seen undead creature broke into the Black Prison.

Clearly, this was not a coincidence, but rather that the undead creature had rushed in, breaking some barrier or restriction, and released these Koutao Fishmen from below.

"No matter whether the situation in the Black Prison is caused by these Koutao Fishmen or not, they are a serious threat to the surrounding valleys. They can reach most of the valleys following the rivers, and judging by their condition, it very much resembles an infection of the mad plague.

We’ll split up into three teams: I’ll stay here to monitor that undead creature, you personally lead a team to watch the movements of this large group of Koutao Fishmen, and at the same time dispatch messengers to all valley communities along the lakes and rivers to issue a warning," the old Mage Laurantice, rather than discussing, was more directly assigning tasks.

Given the urgency of the situation, he could no longer afford to worry about the so-called procedural formalities.
