Chapter 884: Chapter 561: King Meets King_2

Once she discovered that the Mist Barrier enveloping Efanso had failed, she would certainly activate her Tactical Deployment ability to quickly penetrate deep into enemy territory, tearing through all of their trap placements.

The conjecture about the plague virus was not something Gaven had come up with on the spot, but was brought up by Katherine at the latest round of military conferences.

Gaven and the others had been somewhat misled by the plague virus on Yeshandalah. They mistook it for the true potency of the plague.

If it was really that powerful, Arms would have found a way to poison the Conqueror Army long ago.

Since this had not happened, and also because the Conqueror Army was too well-prepared to allow any opportunities, they couldn’t explain it away; they had merely transported a few plague Undead to scare those cities, without actually poisoning them and causing a full outbreak. Thus, they couldn’t cause a flanking attack and impact on the Conqueror Army and had to abandon that explanation.

As for conscience, Devils lack such a thing.

The only reason they hadn’t done it was not for lack of trying but because it was simply impossible.

Even the matter of sacrificing the entire citizenry of Efanso was a piece of false information unleashed by Arms through Grace, intended to make them have reservations during the siege, afraid to fully commit so they would play into the enemy’s hands.

Arms’s expression confirmed this speculation.

From the very beginning, Gaven and his allies had slightly overestimated Arms’s strength, hence they had been led by the nose and had wasted quite a bit of time.

If they had launched a frontal assault from the ground at the start, even without breaking through the Mist Barrier, with the strength of the Goliath Battle Group and the Hobgoblin Giant Brigade, making a surprise attack on the city hall to confront Arms wouldn’t have been difficult. The only uncertainty was how many casualties they would suffer in the process.

In dealing with those Ghosts, neither the Goliath Brigade nor the Hobgoblin Giant Brigade held an advantage. In this respect, the Holy Warriors were the specialists.

"Their lives and deaths are no longer important. As long as you fall, even if Efanso is lost, I will be the ultimate victor," Arms declared firmly, waving his hand. "Kill them."

During the verbal confrontation, forces from both sides were also converging. When it felt about right, there was no longer any need for idle talk.

"Attack," Gaven commanded as well, waving his hand emphatically.

They were now in a setting like a Duel Arena—there was no room for maneuvering or tactical plays, their only choice being soldier to soldier, general to general.

The methods of combat adopted by both sides were strikingly similar.

On the side of the Necromancer, it was Agasha, the Sage Bone Dragon, charging at the forefront, with Arms himself closely following, and four of the most powerful Bone Claws guarding at his side.

On Gaven’s side, a Six-armed Snake Demon charged at the very front, with him following right behind. Daphne also summoned her Ferocious Tiger Shadow mount and led a few strong True Shadow Cavalry to guard around.

Although this space was formed of Negative Energy, it was still dominated by the Laws of Physics. The mode of combat was no different from the Material Plane.

Before the warriors of both sides engaged, the Mages struck first.

Arms, the Necromancer, was naturally the first to strike, quickly forming Dharma Seals with his hands and then pointing, ready to cast the signature necromantic spell Death’s Pointer.

Gaven abruptly halted his footsteps, retreating instead of advancing, raising his hand to launch a spear.

Spell confrontation did not necessarily have to wait for a spell to take effect and then be dispelled—this was the most foolish method.

The smartest method was to prevent the opponent from casting or succeeding in casting in the first place. Even if the casting was successful, as long as it was out of spell range, the enemy would be helpless.

The opponent was a Necromancer, especially proficient in necromantic Attack Spells like Blasphemy, Soul Locking Technique, Banshee’s Wail, and Death’s Pointer—all specialized against the living. And since he was the only living thing here, being hit by one would be a major problem—these Negative Energy Spells would be ineffective against someone whose body was full of Negative Energy.

A tall Bone Claw stepped forward, shielding the Necromancer from the spear, allowing the casting to proceed smoothly. But the primary target, Gaven, had already run far away—far beyond the range of Death’s Pointer.

These necromantic Attack Spells had the capability to kill a single target effectively. However, they also had a non-defect defect: their range was usually not long, typically mid to close range.

Left with no choice, Arms could only target the next best thing, the Six-armed Snake Demon, attempting to test his luck and see if he could instantly kill this terrifying being.

But the instant Death’s Pointer was cast, the Necromancer was dumbfounded because the Six-armed Snake Demon, who had been so close, was no longer in a physical state but had transformed into a Nightshadow, a Legendary Six-armed Serpent Demon Nightshadow.

How could this be?

How could one switch back and forth between a corporeal state and an Undead form?

What kind of monstrosity had the enemy summoned?

The Death’s Pointer, made entirely of Negative Energy, was completely ineffective against the Six-armed Snake Demon, whose body was also composed entirely of Negative Energy.

People say that demons are craftier than Devils, but this is a one-sided view. It only describes the more common low-level demons and Devils. Not to mention the high-rank Serpent Demons, even those Transcendent mid-level Devils, who wish to climb to higher ranks, must possess both formidable strength and cunning wisdom. Otherwise, they wouldn’t last long before being replaced by something stronger and more deceitful.
