Chapter 876: Chapter 558 Battlefield Spell Confrontation_3

Gaven and his forces were carrying the flag of justice, and if they disregarded the welfare of the Efanso citizens, it would be akin to branding themselves with the mark of evil and siding with the necromancers of Efanso.

"Let the Treant Brigade withdraw for now," Gaven ordered somberly.

"This is not entirely a bad thing. The more we show that we care about the lives of Efanso citizens, the less likely they are to initiate the transformation ceremony and kill all the residents," Veranika consoled beside him.

"I know, I am just disgusted by the despicable tactics of this evil group," Gaven nodded and asked, "Has there been any news from Susie?"

"I was just about to report this matter to Lord. The message from Grace is true, that abandoned warehouse indeed has a secret passage leading directly to the Efanso Underground City. What should we do now?" Veranika responded.

"We must play our roles to the hilt," Gaven’s gaze shifted to Katherine, "Madam, I hope you can personally lead the team, take the Goliath Battle Group through the secret passage to raid the Efanso Underground City. Whether it’s a trap or not, try to hold their elite corps for as long as possible. I leave that route entirely in your hands."

From underground, the Goliath Battle Group was not the best choice because their giant body sizes would be limiting in there.

Hobgoblin Giants simply couldn’t fit inside, and not all Dwarf Cities are built as grandly and towering as the Dwarf Statue City; most are designed according to the standards of intermediate-size humans, between two and a half to three meters.

It would be a stretch to have the Goliath delve deeper, not to mention the Hobgoblin Giants.

In fact, the Holy Warriors led by Darnell and the Followers of Tempus led by Aidan were the optimal candidates.

However, if the enemy of Efanso knew their own elite were there, and if the Goliath Battle Group didn’t show up but instead was the unknown Transcendent Battle Group, it would likely shock them, triggering a mutually destructive trap prematurely.

As for having Katherine lead in person, he indeed wanted to leverage her legendary combat prowess and command capabilities to ensure that even if it was a trap, the enemy couldn’t easily overcome them.

"I can," Katherine agreed briskly, "In one hour, I will launch the attack from the secret passage on time."

She had already guessed what Gaven wanted to do next; she just chose to see through without revealing.

After Katherine teleported away to prepare for the sneak attack from the secret passage, Gaven and the Conqueror Army he led did not idle either but made full use of their available forces to engage in a new round of magical and tactical warfare with the Transcendent Archmages on the walls of Efanso City.

The focus of both sides was the wall segment that the Treant Brigade had previously destroyed all the defensive machinery.

After the Treant Brigade withdrew, Gaven directly ordered the Tower War Chariots to advance towards that section of the wall, seemingly escorting his troops to seize control of the fortifications.

Without the Catapult and Ballista Cart, ordinary bows, let alone the Fireball Technique, did relatively limited damage. The twenty Tower War Chariots at the forefront had undergone specialized waterproofing and were equipped with external thickened armor.

Not to mention that the spellcasters were not only from Efanso. The number of spellcasters within the Conqueror Army was also significant by now.

There were Gnoll Sorcerers, Fae Race Druids, Tesser Battlefield Mages, and traditional mages like the female mages from the Roinhein Clan.

As the stature of the Conqueror Army grew larger and its reputation increased, more and more people came to join voluntarily, including those intermediate-low level wandering mages.

Using their casting abilities to exchange for more growth resources from those powerful rulers was a shortcut for these intermediate-low level mages to grow.

Among the many mercenaries of the Giant Dragon Coast, there were quite a few spellcasters, who naturally were the primary targets for recruitment by the Conqueror Army.

Most of these spellcasters were intermediate-low level and particularly low-level spellcasters who had not yet unlocked the ability to cast three-rings; this period was the most awkward for them, as neither their variety of spells nor their spell power was satisfactory, far less useful than a swinging sword or longbow, and they were largely unpopular among mercenary groups.

It wasn’t that the mercenaries were short-sighted and didn’t recognize the immense value hidden in spellcasters, particularly those they trained themselves.

However, the precarious life of mercenaries forced them to focus on the immediate, making it tough for them to consider the future. If they chose a weak low-level mage as a companion and died during a mission, there would be no future to speak of.

It wasn’t just individuals; most small mercenary groups didn’t have the spare financial resources to cultivate their own spellcasters either. It was easier to hire those who were already capable.

Under the pressure of the Conqueror Army, the spellcasters of Efanso City could only compete with them in spellcasting, especially the few Transcendent Casters who were the main force.

Directly in front of the walls of Efanso City, they cast Fire Wall Spells, attempting to destroy the tower war chariots with the fire walls.

The spellcasters of the Conqueror Army responded directly at the original location of the fire wall with an Ice Wall Spell of the same "four rings" level.

The effects of the two spells would directly counteract each other, creating an effect similar to the Dispel Magic.

It wasn’t just the Fire Wall Spell and Ice Wall Spell; many spells of the same level with opposing attributes had the capacity to restrain and counteract each other.

For example, Plant Growth and Plant Withering, Sanctum and Evil Residence, Dark Arts, and Illumination Spell, among others.

Having no other options, the Transcendent Caster used the same tactics again, attempting to destroy the tower war chariots with a Flamestorm.

The Conqueror Army paid no heed— not only was there a continued heavy rain dampening the effects, but even without the rain, these fireballs had no hopes of igniting the tower war chariots, which were not made of wood. They were coated with mud and then covered with Stone Shaping to make them stone-like, not only increasing their resistance to impact but primarily for fireproofing.

The failure of spell against spell directly impacted the army’s advance; the tower war chariots got closer and closer to the walls of Efanso, close enough that those standing on the chariots could directly see the situation atop the walls of Efanso.

Numerous Efanso ballista marksmen, under the supervision of a group of undead, were transporting other ballista carts and catapults toward the chariots—these complex pieces of war machinery could not be operated by the brainless undead, who could only drive the citizens of Efanso to do it.

The wall was crowded with skeletons, zombies, and ghosts—intermediate and low-level undead soldiers, prepared to repel the boarders from the Conqueror Army.

"Assault team, advance."

The Conqueror Army came up with a new tactic.

A group of ten or so Treants with shields charged out first, bearing giant shields, and dashed toward the gates of Efanso, not far away.

Following closely behind them were two Giant Elephant Tree People dragging a massive iron column weighing hundreds of tons. The only difference was that the device attached to the iron column was no longer a roller.

Instead, it was a super-giant board with sixteen wheels, and the iron column was vertically mounted on it, turning it into a siege hammer.

Driven by the two Giant Elephant Tree People, it thunderously smashed toward the gates of Efanso.

The commander of Efanso’s defenses was overwhelmed, probably cursing in his heart.

Why did the enemy choose to move now and not earlier? Just when he had redirected some of the ballista carts and catapults toward the tower war chariot attack point, it was now too late to either pull them back or continue moving them to their intended destination.

Although he ordered the ballista carts and catapults to fire relentlessly and the spellcasters to cast spells without regard to their energy,

it still couldn’t stop the enemy’s fierce advance. Most of the damage was blocked by the shield-bearing Treants, and the spells that could hinder progress or cause significant damage to the Treants were either neutralized or dispelled, with only minor spells left unaddressed.
