Chapter 874: Chapter 558: Spell Duel on the Battlefield

The Ballista Carts had only launched six volleys, and the Catapults had smashed out two rounds when the Treant Brigade successfully pushed forward into their own effective range.

They immediately tightened their formation, the Treants with colossal wooden shields focused on defending against attacks, while those they protected behind them steadied themselves and took their stance, directly hurling their slings.

No special phenomenon occurred like hitting an invisible shield, as there were too many selectable capabilities, each Mist Barrier was different.

Like the Mystlock Locks of Mesnoel, a Mist Barrier that entirely excluded everything from the outside wasn’t nonexistent, but it meant forsaking abilities like blocking teleportation or flight.

As Gaven deepened his understanding of the Mist Barrier and Mystlock Locks, he realized that the ancient Mystlock Locks created by Elves were very special, incredibly more powerful than those human imitations forged from the Mist Barrier. In Elvish, it held the connotation of vanishing out of sight.

The ancient Mystlock Locks made by Elves, just like a different dimension, could cover and conceal an entire city or even a region, including all kinds of isolation, which was not something human-made Mystlock Locks could achieve. These were merely magical barriers imbued with a Special Ability, likely related to the exorbitant cost of crafting ancient Elven Mystlock Locks.

Human-made Mist Barriers only required sufficient Casting Materials, whereas ancient Elven Mystlock Locks typically demanded extensive Law Magic Power from Supreme Mages, and possibly even life as the price, naturally making their power extraordinary.

The Mist Barrier of Efanso City was Nine Rings, only capable of activating three abilities, respectively utilized for prohibiting teleportation, forbidding flight, and banning invisibility. It had no capacity left for internal and external exclusion.

The separation of interior and exterior by the Mist Barrier wasn’t in the invisible shield mode of Mesnoel but more like creating a wall of mist, achieving physical separation. Moreover, it guarded the land but not the sky, with significant flaws. Cities without walls would consider this option; those with walls usually prioritize discarding it.

That is to say, from the start, it could be taken down through ordinary siege tactics, but Gaven was unwilling to let the Conqueror Army suffer substantial casualties, reluctant to engage in a siege.

For a moment, the thudding sounds of impacts were incessant atop the city walls as several Ballista Carts and Catapults went silent.

The Treants held advantages over these siege engines; they were biological beings, and hurling stones was a part of their skills, their Special Ability, linked with Professional Level, receiving a certain boost from magic power modification, plus their innate precision. Especially when targeting the large Catapult Slings on the city walls, it would be boastful to claim a hit with every throw, but they could ensure a hit every three to five throws.

Both Ballista Carts and Catapults were relatively sophisticated machinery, so if an essential intricate component was damaged, the machine would immediately come to a halt.

The stone-throwing Treants relentlessly exploited their advantage, concentrating their fire on the damaged Catapults and Ballista Carts, striving to destroy them utterly before they could be mended by spells—a Complete Repair Technique couldn’t fix things that were shattered.

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

Dozens of red dots rose from the walls of Efanso City, flying towards the Treant Brigade, growing larger as they flew, until they were the size of an adult by the time they reached above the Treants’ heads.

Third Circle Fireball Technique.

The Spellcasters of Efanso had made their move, ready to use their magic artillery to destroy these Treants.

Compared to crossbow arrows and stones from the Ballista Carts and Catapults, this was their true nemesis. Most Awakened Plants had a vulnerability to flame; flame damage on them, even without being extremely effective, would be enhanced. It could even potentially ignite and burn them alive.

Facing their deadly nemesis, the Treant Brigade didn’t budge in the least, only the two leading Treants hoisted their colossal wooden shields high.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

On the battlefield, the distinctive booming explosions of the Fireball Technique erupted upon impact, but conspicuously fewer than just moments ago.

Many could clearly see, the Fireball Techniques that exploded effectively either hit the colossal shields of the Treants or landed on the empty ground nearby.

The Fireball Techniques that fell into the center of the Treant divisions seemed to disappear without a trace, extinguished completely with a whoosh.

One by one, figures flashed and vanished, once again hidden in the vast shadows of the Treants.

These Treant divisions were not made up solely of Treants; within each was hidden a Transcendent Caster.

What just nullified those Fireball Techniques was the Fourth Circle Magic, Lesser Spell Nullifying Barrier.

This Spell could form a magical barrier with a radius of three to four meters around the caster, within which all Three Rings and below Spells would be invalidated, and even area spells like Fireball Technique would not affect the interior of the Barrier.

With such an evident weakness in the Treants, and Fireball Technique being one of the most frequently used spells on the battlefield, how could the Conqueror Army not be prepared?

Rumble!

Accompanied by thunderous sounds and flashes of lightning, torrential rain poured down, extinguishing any possibly ignited colossal wooden shields in the Treants’ hands. Those shield-bearing Treants then shifted their shields aside, allowing the downpour to soak their bodies thoroughly, inside and out.

Casting Fire Magic in a torrential downpour greatly reduced its effectiveness. When landing on the Treants, it would not only be less likely to ignite but also have its vulnerability to flames substantially suppressed, a result of elemental counteraction.
