Chapter 843: Chapter 547: Night Raid at Sea_3
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Three alchemical bombs were shot by the ship’s ballista into the sky, hundreds of meters high, and exploded with a thunderous roar.
These were no ordinary illumination shells, but stealth-breaking illumination shells crafted from the Second Circle spell Flash Dust.
They were the latest magic product from the Red Robe Mages of Ser.
Priced quite exorbitantly, each costing a thousand Gold Coins, just firing these three shells had cost three thousand Gold Coins.
But they were extremely popular among pirates, in high demand yet undersupplied, because they were worth every coin.
The light they emitted was incomparable to that of a regular Illumination Spell, at least three to four times brighter; it made the questionable sea surface as bright as day, tearing through darkness and revealing anything hidden by invisibility.
The Blue Dragon Dragonborn had not mistaken; indeed, there were many invisible quick boats with silent oars, heading towards the Petrified Lizard’s Nest.
Even after seeing through the invisibility, they still couldn’t discern what their attackers looked like.
Because the enemy was not using an invisibility spell but was covered with a pitch-black, enormous cloak, making them still look vague and unreal, even under the exposure of the stealth-breaking illumination shell. At the front of the ships, there were shields interwoven and embedded together, turning these quick boats into full-fledged turtle ships.
These quick boats were not specifically constructed by Gaven, but were improvised from available materials.
The quick boats originated from the recently secretly controlled small docks affiliated with Ilip. In a city layout so disconnect from its docks, achieving this was not difficult. Especially with absolute force, the dozens of pirate soldiers stationed there didn’t even get a chance to pick up their weapons. A few sentries were stealthily taken out, and most were killed in their beds with a Fifth Circle Death Cloud Spell.
Providing invisibility for these quick boats were Shadow Weave-rendered ghostly cloak tarps produced by the Mesnoel Phantom Weaving Factory—a new application developed after a significant increase in the quantity of Shadow Weave, meant for covering ordinary wagons to make them into ghostly carriages, capable of surprising tactical effects. It had not yet had the chance to shine on the battlefield before Gaven applied it to naval warfare.
If not for the Blue Dragon Dragonborn being so diligent and alert, the slavers immersed in revelry would have only discovered the threat upon these boats sneaking aboard.
The wall shields were adapted from the sideboards of ancillary carts, merely disassembled and slightly modified for the Hobgoblin Giants to use as shields. Joined together, four large wooden shields adequately covered the front of the quick boats, obscuring the interior condition.
"Full speed ahead," Gaven, seated on the foremost quick boat, ordered loudly.
Prior to this for stealth reasons, their rowing speed was not particularly fast, at least only half of their full effort.
As his command was given, the speed of the dozens of quick boats soared to the limit, splitting into three groups targeting their own objectives and surging forward.
"Ballista, where is the ballista? What is the ballista for? Fire! Fire quickly!"
"Where are our Mages? Why are they not casting spells now?"
"They’re too far away, the enemy hasn’t entered spell casting range yet."
"Fire! Fire! Fire quickly!"
Amidst the chaos, the ballista carts and ballista on the three-masted ships began turning, sporadically firing at the speeding turtle-shaped quick boats.
"Full speed ahead, never mind them, they can’t hurt us."
"Don’t change course, maintain full speed."
Normally, against such ballista fire, quick boats would either flee in panic or dodge using zigzag motions to lessen the likelihood of being hit.
Knowing that all these warships were equipped with heavy ballista firing specially made armor-piercing crossbow arrows, a hit would mean their six to seven-meter long cargo quick boats would be penetrated outright.
Discovering that the enemies on the quick boats did not react as expected, the slaver sailors operating the ballista carts showed cruel and bloodthirsty smiles.
"Ha, those are fools with no experience in naval combat—ready the grapeshot for the ballista and prepare to beat the drowning dogs!"
"Mages prepare mass offensive lethal spells."
"Hit them, ha...burp...hit them, attacking such dumb targets, even...burp...after two more bottles of rum, I could hit with precision."
"It’s not possible, utterly impossible, I clearly hit them just now, why is there no damage?"
"It went right through, the crossbow arrows actually went right through, are we really dealing with ghosts instead of ordinary enemies?"
One moment those slavers were high-fiving in celebration, the next, they were wearing expressions of disbelief as their crossbow arrows passed through those ships like phantoms.
"Don’t panic, that’s just a magic illusion; the real bodies are trailing behind, ignore the front row, focus attacks on the middle and back rows."
Among the slavers, some knew their stuff, immediately spotting the trick.
Once informed it was magic, the slavers calmed down considerably and watched the situation unfold at sea and indeed spotted the irregularity.
Although the leading ships looked incredibly realistic, even the ripples from their oars seeming authentic, they lacked something—the spread of those ripples abruptly vanished after reaching a certain extent, evidently hitting the limit of the spell’s range.
This was not a classic spell but a new application of Regina’s True Phantom, confusing the enemy by projection through Spirit Crystal Stones.
If it were merely projection, it would be relatively easy to distinguish, but covered by Phantom cloaks on the quick boats, it was easy to be fooled unexpectedly.
The heavy ballista were so powerful that they became quite cumbersome, and loading was relatively slow. With this delay, the quick boats had closed in by several tens of meters.
