Chapter 708: Chapter 504: Building the Road as We Go_2
It wasn’t that Francis had started to view him differently, rather it was that he, due to a shift in his own thinking, had turned some unfavorable situations into favorable ones.
Even in the matter of personally signing the contract with Lord Zalanda, he guessed that there must be some calculation on his side, it was just that he had not figured out the reason behind it.
Having understood this, Conrad’s face showed an appropriately mixed expression of gratitude and a hint of sadness, "As you command."
Although the Saladas Family had an elder council, they only had the right to advise, not to veto; the majority of power was still held in the hands of Francis, who was the Duke. Once he made a final decision, the matter was settled and could only be changed if he himself changed his mind.
Since it was Francis who personally dealt with the matter, the event became solemn and grand, filled with a sense of ceremony.
The opposing party after all was an old Duke of the Tesser People, and also currently the biggest member among the much-reviled noble warlords.
When he left the city, just the convoy accompanying him was an impressive procession of nearly one hundred vehicles.
The location for the signing of the covenant was the same place where Zalanda and Conrad had previously met, which was the default boundary line between their two territories.
The specifics of the process, Gaven didn’t know because he had already returned to the migrating army’s camp for the final preparations.
They all knew that the Saladas Family was attempting to buy time, and to truly sign the covenant, they would have to wait until this migrating army had actually set out on their journey and successfully left the territory of the Tesser People without posing any threat to the Saladas Family anymore.
Before that, they were discussing the details of the alliance, such as the precise boundary lines, the maximum number of soldiers that could be stationed at the border, and whether there was potential for cooperation between the two sides in the future, among other things.
Another important purpose was to hold Zalanda as a hostage to prevent Gaven’s migrating army from attacking Saladas City under the pretense of migration; Is River was their bottom line, the migrating army could only move on the north bank of the Is River.
When the covenant between Darama City and Saladas City would be signed was not decided by the people here but by the migrating army dozens of miles away; countless eyes, both in the sky and on the ground, were watching this migrating army, their every move touching the hearts of countless people.
Tesser Year 568, August 28, which is also Valley Calendar Year 1359, August 28.
This day was destined to leave a profound mark in the history of Darama, in the history of the Tesser People.
As dawn was just breaking, the sound of trumpets resounded across the eastern outskirts of Darama City’s gates, one flying horseman after another sweeping over the huge camp in the sky, loudly conveying orders, "Pack up, prepare to break camp, follow the predetermined order, proceed in an organized manner, the Lord has commanded that today’s march target is 20 kilometers."
The first to emerge from the huge encampment were not the flank chariots.
It was three Treants, who even among their kind stood out, all over eighteen meters tall, approaching the limits of their massive size. Not only their height but their girth as well was impressive, especially the lower half of their bodies, which resembled Thornspike rather than humanoid torsos and had an animalistic body structure with limbs planted on the ground, reminiscent of giant elephants. Their round, stout bodies stood on four legs like massive wooden stakes, each at least thick enough to require two people to embrace.
These three Treants were known as Giant Elephant Tree People, all enlightened by Gaven in Mesnoel, originating from the same mountaintop. Underneath this mountaintop laid an Ancient mammoth graveyard, where thousands of mammoths were buried. They absorbed the spirit souls of the mammoths, which was why they achieved their current size.
The three Giant Elephant Treants were assigned to the Flank Pioneer Army as pathfinders, but what they were pulling was not a flank chariot, rather it was a massive iron column.
This iron column had a diameter of two meters and a length of six meters, along with its exterior towing devices, the thing weighed a terrifying one hundred and fifty tons.
Only with the combined strength of the Giant Elephant Treants were they able to drag this object across the wilderness without affecting their speed.
This was a version of an extra-large road roller from another world.
The purpose was self-evident, of course, it was for road-making.
Hundreds of Tower War Chariots laden with food and supplies, even for a commercial dirt road, were a significant burden, let alone on the soft, loose soil of the wilderness. Even with the assistance of Treants and Enlightened Trees pulling them, the speed would still be quite touching.
Merely passing through didn’t fit Gaven’s style, especially with such a massive amount of preparations made.
He wished not only to make a name and a reputation but also to pave a road, to create a migratory path from the Tesser People to Valley.
Once this was accomplished, it wouldn’t be a one-time deal but an ongoing opportunity. Even more Tesser People would follow this migratory path en route to Valley.
Even the residents of Karinshan, Amu, and the area surrounding Steam Lake might take this road to Valley, similar to the Tesser People who are one of the populous nations. Especially since Karinshan practiced slavery, where slave uprisings and escapes were frequent-flying. As long as Gaven made a name for himself, it would be fatally attractive to them.
The Giant Elephant Treants’ weight was already terrifying, combined they were even heavier than the road roller iron column.
Along with the stamping and pressing, the soil they passed over was completely compacted; even the levelness of the terrain was significantly improved. By the time they arrived at Ruitawen near Amu, the entire journey had been through flat plains, meaning as long as they resolved the issue of relatively loose soil which could entrap vehicles, the road wouldn’t be difficult to navigate.
