Chapter 698: Chapter 501 Initial Framework_1
About Darren, Gaven had heard quite a lot.
Though only fourteen years old, he was the most outstanding among the younger generation of Nort Castle, not only possessing excellent adaptability but also sufficient self-discipline, exhibiting strong tenacity and perseverance. He actually took to heart the casual teachings from Gaven, managing to train with an astonishing daily regime that not only surpassed most adults but also many professionals.
Effort and reward are directly proportional, which allowed him to unlock his Professional Level at the mere age of fourteen.
What truly made him stand out was the Book of Strategy manuscript that Gaven had casually given to him. He actually learned something from it and put it into practice, leading a group of children to form a youth army and playing an unexpectedly significant role in a battle.
Zalanda decisively recruited him into the Nort Guard Squad, and this became the beginning of his rise. Using his own mind, he won over those veteran Nort soldiers, and it was from him that Zalanda’s troops started placing increasing importance on the Book of Strategy.
Unlike those soldiers who revered Lady Strategy for this reason, Darren harbored a secret in his heart, a secret known only to him and Lord Zalanda: the Book of Strategy wasn’t bestowed upon Zalanda by Lady Strategy as outsiders believed, but was personally written by Young Master Gaven Nort and handed over by himself to Lord Zalanda.
They were venerating the wrong person; the one who deserved their respect was Young Master Gaven.
But constrained by an oath, he could not correct this view held by others, and could only petulantly proclaim that he was a student of Young Master Gaven, that everything he knew was taught to him by Young Master Gaven. Outsiders thought he was referring to training methods, unaware he was talking about the Book of Strategy of the past, now the Path of War.
"Good, I didn’t misjudge you back then. Not only did you excellently complete the task I gave you, but you also left me such a big surprise," Gaven said as he helped Darren up and laughed heartily.
The twists and turns of life are truly marvelous.
Back then, he had not realized that Darren was an uncut gem, acting on a whim, and yet, in the end, he benefited from nurturing a promising protégé.
Darren couldn’t hide his nervousness, "Young Master, General Kopofiel has overestimated me. My abilities are not as strong as he says; commanding so many regular knights, so many people, it’s far beyond my capacity. My own life and death are trivial, but the lives of countless soldiers and civilians are of great importance."
So far, the most he had led was a hundred-man cavalry unit.
Now, out of the blue, he was asked to lead an army of two thousand and had to form it himself; he was somewhat bewildered. To be able to articulate his thoughts under such circumstances, at his age, was also a sign of remarkable ability.
"Sometimes what we feel about our own capabilities isn’t as accurate as what others see. I understand General Kopofiel’s character; he always speaks the truth and seeks facts. If he says you can do it, then you definitely can. It’s just that you haven’t discovered it yet," Gaven said, patting Darren’s shoulder firmly, cheering him on, "But this matter isn’t for me to decide; it’s up to Lord Zalanda, the City Lord. Are you willing to let him go?"
Although the relationship between the two was close and Zalanda clearly intended to promote him to Baron Nort and fully restore the Nort Guard Squad to him, certain processes were indispensable.
Because being in her position also meant representing a group with interests.
"As long as Darren nods, I have no objections," Zalanda stated readily.
"Darren." All eyes once again focused on the young man.
"Darren is willing to follow Young Master to the death," Darren said excitedly, attempting to kneel again, but was held back by a grip strong as iron.
"Very well, we’ll settle it like this," Gaven decided and ordered, "This Flank Pioneer Army will be under the command of Darren. All battlehorses will be provided to them as a priority, ensuring that each vehicle is paired with four quick horses for pulling and each person has one warhorse. Arm a thousand men with Long Spears and another thousand with Crossbows."
Although there was a shortage of horses in Darama, it did not amount to a complete lack. After all, Thacel was a knightly Kingdom, and horses were an essential mode of transport. Any estate owner with the means, even farmers, would keep a few horses for transportation.
The two thousand men brought by General Kopofiel had all arrived on horseback, with some even having one or two spare horses or pack nags.
These warhorses and nags were most likely the personal property of the warriors and mercenaries and naturally could not be arbitrarily conscripted.
However, they could be bought at a high price from their owners and allocated to where they were most needed, which was also what needed to be done next.
Gaven turned to another striking woman and said, "Ms. Kellysha, I would like to ask you to serve as the deputy commander of this legion, leading all Golia to form General Darren’s personal guard, assisting him in controlling the entire army."
He had already glanced at Darren’s attributes; his class wasn’t that of a warrior, but a unique spellcasting profession of Thacel, the Battle Mage, with only three Professional Levels.
Such a mage is typically trained in various military aspects from a young age, with little requirement for mage knowledge, as this profession forsakes part of the regular mage’s progression (having only half of the regular mage’s Spell Slots) to specialize in combat Spellcasting and Magic Wand usage.
