Chapter 695: Chapter 500 Roll-call_1
Kopofiel had been following Gaven for a while and knew what he needed the most.
These three hundred men were the very reason he was willing to take great risks, guerrilla for over a month in the territories of warlord nobles who wished him dead. If the agreed time hadn’t already passed, he would have stayed even longer, collecting more young and upright knights; they were the hope of this country.
"Good, good, good," Gaven praised repeatedly, stepping forward quickly and firmly grasping General Kopofiel’s arm, "You know me well, General. This time, you have made a magnificent contribution. Come, come, come, let us sit down and talk in detail."
What Gaven wanted to overthrow were Thacel’s warlord nobles, not to deny the entire knight system.
The political systems of Earth may not be suitable for Felen, as this is a world with Transcendent powers, where one’s occupation is closely related to one’s actions.
As a leader, even if one doesn’t possess leading-edge strength at first, as long as one is competent, one will gradually obtain it, albeit slower compared to the intense and fast-paced life of an adventurer.
What ultimately forms is a system led by a few elites who safeguard the ordinary people, and the knight system is a prime example of such a system.
The knight system of Thacel not only didn’t deteriorate but grew stronger, more sound, and more loyal amidst the continuous conflicts among the warlords.
Those warlord nobles could be disloyal and unpatriotic themselves, but they demanded and educated their knights in the concepts of loyalty to the sovereign and love for the country. It is just that their concept slightly differs: they see themselves as the sovereign and the state.
This kind of mid-level elite is exactly what Gaven lacks.
Surely, among Darama’s immigrants, there are such mid-level elites, but definitely not in great numbers—if they were abundantly available, it would indicate that Zalanda had failed miserably, not having made full use of them.
Now, with Kopofiel’s help, he has filled the last gap.
Once everyone was seated, Gaven immediately laid out his plan, "You’ve seen those war chariots outside; I plan to divide them into two convoys. One is made up of tower carriages pulled by treants in conjunction with beasts, mixed in with the main force, mainly responsible for illness that arises during the journey, as well as women, children, and the elderly. The other is composed of an elite convoy with side carriages, they set off early each day to build roads and bridges along the way, which will greatly improve the safety and speed of the entire migrating group.
Originally, I wanted those citizens to form their teams. Now, with the knights and mercenaries brought back by General Kopofiel, it will be much simpler.
We meticulously select two hundred knights, one main and one secondary for each, to manage a tower carriage and, around that core, to form a civilian team of approximately a hundred, selecting the fittest among them to form mutual aid teams. When necessary, they can rely on the tower carriages to fight.
The remaining knights and mercenaries will form a line of precision with those one hundred side carriages, twenty for each vehicle, moving and training as they go.
The Nort Guard Squad and Golia will each form mobile squads, always ready to assist.
What do you think of this plan? Is there anything that needs to be added?"
The line formation is an excellent choice for non-elite forces, especially for those civilians, as the tall war chariots are a symbol of safety. Before they are destroyed or breached, morale is unlikely to collapse.
"According to the Lord’s arrangements, this migration can bring at most ten thousand citizens. What if the number of migrants far exceeds this?" Nola asked first.
During the preliminary count, there were already thirteen thousand expressing the desire to migrate. Seeing the thorough preparations by Gaven, the number might even increase dramatically.
"One hundred is just a nominal figure; we can adjust the number of people in each unit based on the actual size, just maintaining a total of one hundred units. Specific situations must be decided based on the conditions of those citizens; after all, their family backgrounds vary. There will definitely be some who set out alone, some bringing their entire families, and some even bringing horse-drawn carriages and goods. We must decide according to the circumstances to ensure that the situations of the one hundred teams are as similar as possible, facilitating our unified management on the road." Gaven was always detail-oriented and had considered all aspects of such matters.
After a short pause, Gaven turned his gaze back to Kopofiel, "It will be a real test of the knights’ management and adaptability. General, are you sure they can handle this task?"
Without hesitation, Kopofiel assured, "I have personally met and evaluated most of them; they possess genuine talent and skills. Many have experience in managing troops. Supervising a hundred or two should not be too difficult for them, but the specific circumstances will only be known after real combat. We can screen and evaluate as we go, and if they prove unsuitable, we can replace them at any time."
"That’s true," Gaven nodded, "We are after all a team put together on the fly. Some things can only be ironed out as we progress. We’ll start with the side carriage line formation, begin assembling and training tomorrow, and at the very least, teach them how to form the line and fight relying on it before hitting the road."
"For this vanguard army, does the Lord already have a candidate for the commander?" Kopofiel inquired.
First, appoint a commander to facilitate subsequent work.
