Chapter 671: Chapter 492 Dragon Slaying Trap_1
The hunters of Anfield Village hurried after, finally biting onto the trail of the gnoll fugitives near the Garden Forest.
However, the difficulty in dealing with these gnoll escapees far exceeded their expectations.
A single Mist Spell caused them to become utterly disoriented, and by the time they emerged, they only saw the figures of the gnoll fugitives disappearing into the dense forest.
"Gnoll sorcerers? They don’t just have spell-like abilities, they can cast spells too!"
"Damn it, I knew earning money wouldn’t be that easy. That damned swindler didn’t tell us these gnolls were magicians. Luckily, their professional levels aren’t high, otherwise, we would have suffered a great loss."
"No wonder he offered such a high price and insisted on them being alive, that swindler!"
The villagers of Anfield Village stopped at the edge of the forest one after the other.
If this group of gnolls consisted of sorcerers with professional levels, it changed everything; who knew if there were any among them skilled in high-damage magic spells.
They had come with enthusiasm but returned in defeat, cursing Gaven to the high heavens in their hearts.
This pursuit had caused quite the commotion.
The villagers of Anfield did not dare to chase after them, but the disturbance alerted the natives in the Garden Forest.
These dozen or so gnoll deserters had just entered a few kilometers into the Garden Forest when they realized they were surrounded by a unique group of gnolls.
These gnolls had wings, not bat-like wings like those of Erde, but avian ones, and instead of the backward-bending dragon-like legs that gnolls had, they had talons of an eagle.
They closely resembled the offspring of a gnoll and a harpy.
But the group of gnoll deserters immediately recognized that the others were not half-breeds, but gnolls with absolutely pure bloodlines.
The unique appearance had resulted from the influence of the giant dragon they followed, a form of synchronized evolution.
Before the local gnolls could pose any questions, the leading deserter began spilling everything about his identity and purpose like beans from a bamboo tube, "My name is Casar, and I’ve come to seek the giant dragon’s protection; we have brought treasures to present to his greatness."
To substantiate his claim, Casar unwrapped his knapsack slightly, allowing a radiant golden glow to stream out from within.
Upon seeing the genuine silver and gold treasures, the demeanor of the eagle-tribe gnolls softened considerably. The leader shrilly said, "Your appearance is very odd; we’ve never seen you around here. Where are you from?"
"We come from the Rocklands, bound by an evil Half-Elf named Gaven Nort, who enslaved our entire tribe to work for him without compensation. Serving the giant dragon is our holy duty, not for an evil Half-Elf. When we heard there was an immensely powerful giant dragon here, we stole his treasure and came to join him," Casar responded indignantly in a high-pitched voice.
"The evil Half-Elf you are talking about, does he have a Pegasus as a mount? Did he come here not long ago?" A sharp voice came from the top of the forest.
"Seen before, great one." All the gnolls prostrated on the ground.
Because the one speaking was no longer an eagle-tribe gnoll but a huge half-eagle, half-dragon creature.
It was the Swift Roc that had previously clashed with Gaven and had suffered a substantial loss.
Casar shakily replied, "It’s him; does the great one know him? Please, don’t send us back. That evil Half-Elf will surely kill us to warn the other gnolls."
"Send back?" The Swift Roc cackled, "I won’t just not send you back; from now on, you are my subjects. Quickly, tell me, what is the backstory of that damned Half-Elf?"
"He is a minor noble from Thacel; somehow, he ended up exiled to the Rocklands of Komeer. There he enslaved gnolls on a large scale, even shamelessly declaring himself the King of the Gnolls." Casar began listing the malevolent deeds of his former master, drawing murmurs of agreement.
"Indeed shameless. Gnolls can only serve the giant dragon; how could they serve a Half-Elf?"
"Only a holy giant dragon can claim the title ’King of the Gnolls.’ What gives a Half-Elf the right?"
"You made the wisest choice; Lord Alarada will protect you."
In the eyes of both the eagle-tribe gnolls and the Swift Roc,
The reasons given by Casar seemed so justifiable, so inherently correct, and they believed it without a shadow of a doubt.
Because they were gnolls, and he was a powerful giant dragon.
Gnolls serving a giant dragon was a calling from their bloodline; it was a righteous and proper thing to do.
Casar continued, "That evil Half-Elf is no longer satisfied with the Rocklands; he wants to exploit us gnolls fully, aiming to open an inn, to trade.
This is a new trading post that he established. Not only did he buy an inn here, but he also reclaimed an abandoned quarry in the eastern hills and enslaved the gnolls there..."
"Greed, he is far too greedy, even more than the dragons," the Swift Roc said angrily. "Have you ever heard him mention me?"
"That... uh..." Casar looked hesitant and troubled, stammering out, "The evil Half-Elf only spoke slanderous words; I am afraid to speak them and defile you, great one."
"I command you to speak, and you shall speak. Whatever you say, I shall hold you blameless," the more hesitant the other party was, the more the Swift Roc wanted to know.
