Chapter 657: Chapter 487: Half-Plane of Fear_2
Wine for Friendship had already started to take effect.
At the very least, Philancy didn’t show any significant reaction to the closeness between the two; she discreetly pulled away and quickly composed herself. The image of a fragile and helpless little woman was fading, and once again she became that enigmatic, lofty Legendary Spellcaster shrouded in mist.
When Gaven mentioned the name ’Land of Mist,’ her expression fluctuated once more, but not as severely as before. She strived to make her voice sound very neutral, "You’ve heard of this place as well? How much do you know about it?"
"I’ve only heard people mention it in passing before, so my knowledge is very limited." Gaven recounted in detail what he knew of the place.
"Land of Mist?" Philancy couldn’t help but nod involuntarily, feeling the name suited her predicament all too well, "Where did you learn this information? Can you obtain more specifics? What other demon realms exist in this world, and how can one completely break away from them?"
Even a Legendary Spellcaster cannot be omnipotent and omniscient.
At least, she had never heard about this place before she was trapped here; Gaven was the first person she had come across who knew anything about it.
"I apologize, milady, what I mentioned earlier is all I know. At the moment, I can’t recall where I got this information from, but I will try my best to remember and find a way to free you completely," Gaven said sincerely, "Milady, could you please talk about how you ended up in this situation? This way, I can devise a specific solution according to your condition and gather more relevant intelligence - you know, since it takes a thief to catch a thief."
Perhaps it was because he was already aware of her situation, and there was nothing left for her to hide.
Or maybe the goodwill from ’Wine for Friendship’ had lowered her guard, leading her to sigh softly and say, "That approach is unlikely to work, for the Mage who cursed me has been slain by my hand, his soul imprisoned by me. But despite my efforts, I’ve been unable to make him submit and lift the curse on me.
If the characteristics of this plane you mentioned are accurate, it’s very possible that the Spellcaster wasn’t lying; he only knew how to cast the curse, not how to lift it."
Philancy refrained from mentioning the identity of that Spellcaster.
After all, only another Legendary Spellcaster could have bested her.
A Legendary Spellcaster is certainly not a rootless wanderer. With relatives, friends, and probably a slew of Apprentices, most of whom are not pushovers, letting word out could easily attract a host of unwanted troubles.
Gaven keenly understood this and didn’t pry further since she didn’t volunteer the information. Instead, he posed another question, "What was the deal with the magical battle that destroyed this inn three years ago? The mysterious masked Mage who blasted Mage Thacel to death, it wasn’t you, was it?"
"Yes." Philancy openly admitted, "He eyed something that wasn’t meant for him. So, he had to die. Let’s hope we won’t come to that point."
The last part was clearly a warning.
A warning to Gaven not to harbor designs on the Magic Cottage, her final stronghold. Should her bottom line be crossed, she wouldn’t hesitate to kill, no less demolish a humble mortal inn.
"Rest assured, milady," Gaven pledged, thumping his chest, "My goal in seeking your Spellbook is to unlock the Arcane Mage Profession. You’ve already taught me the most suitable part for me. Even if I did get my hands on the Spellbook, I doubt I could achieve that level of mastery. After all, I’ve never received a formal education in magic and lack the fundamental knowledge."
This was the honest truth.
Even if he were to be given the Nesserel Grimoire, he would probably only unlock a normal advancement to Arcane Adept rather than the Arcane Soul Tower model.
Awareness of one’s limitations is valuable; the study of magic is a task of infinite patience. Setting aside whether one is naturally inclined, just the investment in time prevents many pursuits.
"I can see that," Philancy nodded, "If you wish to smoothly progress on the path of spellcasting, you must fill those foundational gaps. That’s something others can’t do for you, only you can help yourself."
"Milady, could you tell me when you’re able to manifest here? Just so we can communicate more easily in the future?" Gaven continued to gather information about Philancy.
Philancy didn’t hide anything, "As you rightly guessed, the power I can wield has a definite relationship with the phases of the moon. For two nights before and after the full moon, I can appear in this form. Conversely, during the five nights of the new moon, my connection with the Material Plane becomes so weak I can’t even sense it. The rest of the time, my presence increases or decreases with the waxing and waning of the moon."
"This also presents an excellent direction for gathering information. I will focus on collecting documents and literature related to the lunar phases and Goddess Suren," Gaven burst with brainstorming ideas, "I wonder, can milady take things back with her?"
"I can, but only items I can carry by hand. In the Land of Mist, all spatial magic is sealed, and many spells are unstable; better not to use them if not necessary." Philancy’s expression darkened, apparently recalling unpleasant memories.
"That works perfectly," Gaven said enthusiastically, "In that case, we can divide the labor. I’ll collect documents and literature outside, and then you can take them back to the Land of Mist for research to see if we can find what we need. Oh, and milady, it would be best if you could provide me with a list of the documents and books you have, to prevent any duplication in our efforts, saving energy and time."
