Chapter 620: Chapter 475: Hiring a Companion Lady_1

This is not Earth; many creatures and their natural affinities, as well as their relationships with the gods and the Laws, are deeply ingrained, running through their very bones and souls. Attempting to change such innate nature is only half as effective while requiring double the effort.

Why would one wish to change such inherent traits that are so beneficial to the Gnolls?

Is it for the so-called equity and freedom?

This is a typical case of imposing one’s own subjective ideas onto others.

Going with the flow will yield twice the result with half the effort.

Therefore, no matter how much his power expands, he planned to govern the Gnolls in a divided manner.

It’s not that there will be no reward and punishment system, but rather that this system will not involve ordinary wealth. Instead, it will offer things related to Giant Dragons as rewards — such as being responsible for delivering food to a Giant Dragon, or serving as a guard for a Dragon’s Nest.

In human eyes, this is damn well a hard and undesirable job.

But in the eyes of the Gnolls, it represents supreme honor and a stepping stone to becoming stronger — and this isn’t just talk; it’s an actual fact.

The bloodline of the Gnolls is all too susceptible to the influence of Giant Dragons. Merely living in a place inhabited by Giant Dragons can easily stimulate mutations in their bloodline, and there is a direct correlation between the strength of the bloodline awakening and the power of the dragons themselves.

The stronger the Giant Dragon, the more Gnolls it can influence at once, the higher the likelihood of Gnolls’ bloodline awakening, and the less time it takes to stimulate such an awakening.

This is why Gnoll Tribes that serve powerful Giant Dragons are more formidable.

Gnolls shouldn’t be called Gnolls but rather "dog’s legs," for they are naturally destined to follow and serve Giant Dragons.

After listening to Gaven’s explanation, Mother Gao Ser involuntarily nodded, "A quarry worker who doesn’t need a salary and doesn’t require extra armed protection certainly fits the bill. The way you put it, I’m becoming a bit tempted myself."

For many mining operations, the indigenous monsters of the mountains and hills where they operate are also a troubling issue.

Mass eradication is impractical, and the only solution is armed protection, which naturally increases the cost of mining.

Mother Gao Ser was merely expressing her thoughts; incorporating monster races into one’s domain is not uncommon, but it’s not something just anyone can accomplish, at least she didn’t have any idea where to start.

After briefly organizing the relevant information, Mother Gao Ser replied one by one, "For mining, there is a suitable area near Anfield Village. About a dozen kilometers to the east lies the South Ridge of the Stone Bridge Hills. There used to be a decent quarry there, but it was abandoned many years ago. It’s said that deformed monsters haunt the place, and there’s even a connection to my Joy Hall in that regard."

"Let’s hear it." Gaven showed an expression of interest.

Just like those Ghost Castles and Ghost Manors, such abandoned properties, known as lost sites, are as common as weeds in Felen.

They represent an important source of income for mercenaries, who are either hired to reclaim such areas or do so on their initiative and then sell them to interested buyers.

There is also another type called Exploration Knights.

Their status is in between that of noble Lords and Adventurers. The difference is they have no inherited lands or properties and must venture to non-human lands to establish their claims.

Some places recognize these Knights, especially city-state federations, for it is an excellent way for them to expand their territories.

Other places do not, such as in feudal nations or slave states like Karinshan or Thacel, because in the eyes of those Rulers and the noble class, even wilderness is their land; whether one establishes it through one’s own efforts or not, you either swear loyalty and pay taxes, or you get out, for everything is theirs.

Aside from Komeer and Sambia, all other regions of the Northern Lands acknowledge these Knights, even Anfield, which is only about a hundred and forty to fifty kilometers from Waterdeep City.

Having recalled the details, Mother Gao Ser said, "My Joy Hall used to be a country villa of the Ksente Family. Its last owner, Baron Delroz, became extraordinarily eccentric in his old age, completely abandoning the high society life of Waterdeep City to relocate here, indulging in experiments with Undead Necromancy in pursuit of immortality."

Besides, he also conducted experiments on the human body, purportedly all against the logic of the human anatomy, adding extra limbs, installing eyes at the back of the head, or other superfluous organs.

But one night, Baron Delroz mysteriously disappeared from his own villa, and his test subjects took the opportunity to escape, fleeing into the Stone Bridge Hills and apparently settling in the abandoned quarry, where they still exist to this day.

Later, his villa fell into the hands of an Adventure Group called Pending Five Swords. They used it as their headquarters, but this did not last long — merely a season passed before they, like Baron Delroz, vanished within the villa, leaving behind only their starving mounts."

"You’re not going to tell me that you then bought the villa and turned it into today’s Joy Hall, are you?" Gaven said, his expression changing slightly.

"Exactly." Mother Gao Ser nodded, confirming his guess.

"One mysterious disappearance could be explained away as an accident, but two establishes a pattern, and there’s a strong likelihood of a third or fourth. Aren’t you afraid that the same fate might befall you?" Gaven couldn’t help asking.
