Chapter 600: Chapter 468 The Weeping Witch_2
"If you want to buy that inn for personal use, it’s not impossible, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re planning to run a business. It would be easier and less hassle just to find an empty lot and build a new one," Mother Gao Ser immediately understood Gaven’s intention.
"We intend to use it for ourselves, and we have our own Dragon Vein Gnoll Construction Crew. They can cast a great number of Mending and Complete Repair Techniques every day, which makes the repair process a little more convenient," Gaven revealed just a bit.
Even without this, he would be able to find many more reasons why he had to buy the ruins of the Laughing Bandit Inn.
Mother Gao Ser did not doubt him and nodded, saying, "If that’s the case, repairing indeed saves more effort than building anew. However, my knowledge about The Weeping Witch is very limited. Most of what I know is hearsay, as well as local rumors.
But one thing is certain, she really existed. Sometimes, she would wander the inn in the form of a silent phantom; it is said that at times, she would enter the guests’ rooms and look down upon those travelers. Some believe she did this to draw upon the guests’ life force for her own use, though, to my recollection, there were never any unsolved deaths here before it burned down.
However, for most people, waking up from sleep to see a terrifying ghost’s face appearing before them would likely be unforgettable, and they would never stay in this inn again.
Such encounters were not common. Most of the time, she was invisible, but you could hear her faint sobbing—that’s where her name came from.
It is also said that sometimes, she would take physical form, just like you and me, and enter the night to strangle her enemies. No local has ever witnessed this, and those who have probably ended up dead.
But in a village this small, every death is significant, and the deaths directly linked to her are few and far between."
Gaven then asked, "Are there any legends or stories about this Weeping Witch?"
"There is one, but I personally find it quite unreliable."
"Let’s hear it."
"The legend has it that The Weeping Witch was a witch who lived here before Anfield Village was established. She obtained a powerful spellbook from the destroyed arcane Empire of Nesserel. With it, she transformed tame animals into powerful monsters to fight against the various beasts of the wilderness.
Then one day, her fiancé came to visit her, but was accidentally killed by one of her monsters. After finding her fiancé dead, she abandoned her magic, overwhelmed with pain and regret. Upon hearing the commotion, some orcs came and killed her, but her spellbook was never found, said to have been stolen. She looks down upon each traveler, in search of her lost spellbook."
"That really is unreliable. How could a witch possibly abandon her greatest strength—her magic—and lose her spellbook? Instead of facing her mistake, she should have been more actively studying magic, looking for a way to revive her lover." This legend was a big letdown for Gaven. It was full of holes and likely just conjecture by common folk who could not begin to fathom the power of a spellbook passed down from Nesserel.
Gaven’s real goal in coming here was The Weeping Witch and her spellbook, which held the knowledge he needed.
He knew her true history and had some understanding of her current situation, although it was all through indirect channels.
Because in his past life, a man named Thorne Trasarren had bought the inn and discovered this secret; he was probably still in Thacel, working hard to find the stolen treasures of the palace.
What Gaven needed to do now was to get ahead of him, to make the inn his own, and it was almost a sure thing now.
"Just take legends as stories," Mother Gao Ser said with a smile, "One thing is for certain, The Weeping Witch is not a bloodthirsty undead. Whatever she does, must have her own purpose, which ordinary people can’t understand. If you find out her motive and help her fulfill her desire, it is possible to rid of her completely. Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention, ordinary purification methods do not work on this undead. The previous innkeepers have summoned plenty of priests and holy warriors, including Transcendents, and after casting her out, she simply reappears a few days later."
Of course, purification wouldn’t work, as she wasn’t a true undead, but rather a living person.
Gaven thought to himself but outwardly kept thanking her, "With this information, I feel completely reassured. Do you know to whom I need to talk to buy the inn’s ownership? The steward, Lord Brister, maybe?"
He had observed Anfield Village cursorily and had not found anything resembling an administrative building.
"Brister doesn’t deal with such matters. Do you know what ’steward’ means? It means he has the duty to guard, to protect this place. Our entire village has to pay taxes to him, but besides that, he doesn’t get involved in any village affairs and leaves everything to the villagers to manage themselves. His extensive guard duties already take up all his energy," Mother Gao Ser explained the administrative situation in Anfield Village, which was typical of how many cities ruled over their villages.
These stewards are usually military commanders, adept in leading troops into battle, but when it comes to governance, they are mediocre at best.
"I see. So what should I do?"
"Given your current reputation in Anfield Village, you simply need to stand in front of the inn’s ruins and shout out, declaring your intent to rebuild the place. After all, it is ownerless," Mother Gao Ser shifted her tone and continued, "However, to avoid trouble, I’d suggest you bring some drink, pay your respects at the grave of the former innkeeper, and then throw a feast at Malande Crossroads to invite the entire village. Have those with influence witness it. As long as nobody strongly objects, the matter is practically settled."
