Chapter 572: Chapter 459 The Bizarre Dragon Vein Creature_1
But the horse breeders and horse tamers were very fond of doing this because it endowed the warhorses they raised with more unique bloodlines, capable of producing superior war steeds.
The pseudo-Pegasus before them was one of the most valuable among these, even more popular than the real Pegasus. That was because it only had the appearance of a Pegasus and lacked the wisdom of one; therefore, it was easier to tame. Many considerations regarding their thoughts and feelings were unnecessary.
An unexpected incident interrupted the friendly competition.
With a thunderous roar, the massive figure of a monstrous creature appeared in the sky.
As it emerged, the horses below panicked and stampeded away from the monster.
The six young female Pegasus Knights also gave no further thought to competing with Gaven, as they flew towards the gigantic creature.
"Giant Dragon?" Gaven and Luna exclaimed in unison, though the implications of their whispers were vastly different.
Gaven was somewhat astonished and incredulous, as they were so close to Waterdeep City—a mere three days’ walk, or half a day’s ride on a flying mount. Although the area below was not densely populated, it was certainly not an uncharted wilderness.
Did the Giant Dragon tire of living, to come here for hunting?
Even if it didn’t draw the attention of human powerhouses, it would surely attract a multitude of Dragon Slayers.
Now was not the Ancient Era; although Giant Dragons still held the title of the continent’s premier hunters, they had been forced to retreat to the wilds in many places, ceding the most suitable living spaces to those rapidly proliferating intelligent species.
In Luna’s whisper, however, there was an intense excitement. She vividly recalled hunting a dragon in the valley; at that time, she had not yet unlocked her Professional Levels or acquired a series of powerful auxiliary abilities. Now faced with another dragon, she naturally couldn’t wait to try.
"Let’s go see." If it had merely been an encounter with a Giant Dragon preying on warhorses, Gaven would not have gotten involved. But now that it concerned the newly met friends, he couldn’t stand by idly.
Luna had been awaiting Gaven’s words and, with an excited whinny, she charged at full speed towards the imposing silhouette.
The huge creature had two long, straight legs more akin to bird claws than dragon claws, with enormous leathery wings, a streamlined body, and a slender neck much like a real dragon’s. However, its head resembled more that of an eagle or a falcon, with a black beak so big it was frightening. No one doubted its power—it could undoubtedly peck through the hard skull of a horse with ease. Its thick tail was very much in the Dragon style, ending in a standard arrowhead shape, like an oversized siege crossbow arrow.
When it bellowed, thick sparks spewed from its nostrils, but they dissipated before reaching the ground.
Its size had reached the pinnacle of large creatures but was just short of the colossal category.
This was a Dragon Vein Creature with Giant Dragon bloodline. As for the specific breed, even Gaven wasn’t sure.
The mix of Giant Dragons was so common in Felen that not even he recognized all Dragon Vein Creatures.
From the appearance of this Dragon Vein Creature, it was clear that, like a Flying Dragon, it excelled in aerial combat and possessed impressive flying speed.
Far from being frightened away by the six Pegasus Knights, the Dragon Vein Creature became enraged, letting out a cry that was part eagle, part dragon, as if sighting a sworn enemy. It gave up hunting the warhorses and charged at them furiously.
What was even stranger was that the knights did not use their spells but instead unslung their longbows and began firing at the Dragon Vein Creature.
Strange!
It was extremely odd!
A group of Mages, instead of casting spells, engaged in arrow combat with a creature known for its thick-skinned toughness.
Either these Mages were foolish, or there was something peculiar about the creature, like Nightshadow, immune to low- and mid-tier magic.
The latter seemed more likely.
Given the skilled teamwork exhibited by the young Pegasus Knights, they were far from foolish and seemingly had an extensive combat history with this Dragon Vein Creature—they surely knew it inside out.
Life Force: 198 (Life Dice 16D12+96)
Size: Large
Attributes: Strength 24, Dexterity 21, Constitution 18, Intelligence 12, Perception 14, Charisma 11
Before even approaching, data on the surface level of the Dragon Vein Creature was collected. Other stats were quite average, but its Dexterity was alarming; for a creature of its size, agility is usually not so high.
You couldn’t expect a pickup truck to be as nimble as a small electric car, right?
This was determined by size; the bigger they are, the more cumbersome they tend to be. Many colossally sized Giant Dragons, their other attributes transcendent and even Legendary, had agility scores reaching a mere ten points, which was considered above the threshold.
But when dealing with creatures above Transcendent, merely viewing these surface stats was no longer sufficient. Their true strength often lay in deep-seated Special Abilities, like Nightshadow. Without the support of numerous Special Abilities, his power wouldn’t have been close to making a Quasi-Legendary Warrior flee in disarray.
"Should we lend a hand?" The Half-Moon Colt asked in a low voice.
"Close in carefully; if anything’s amiss, we’ll back off," Gaven said cautiously.
Compared to facing this unknown Dragon Vein Creature, Gaven preferred dealing with those world-renowned Giant Dragon breeds. He was well-informed about their abilities and less likely to end up capsized in a gutter.
